MISSISSIPPI SIMON KOOYMAN-Clarksclale fRetiredJ. The story of Instrumental Music in Mississippi is almost synonymous with the story of some twenty years of the life of Simon Kooyman. He carne to Clarksdale in 1926 and organized the first school band in Mississippi, a band which he developed into a playing and marching organization that always carried the stamp of Superior. He gave time and money fyes,- much moneyl to organize the first contests in Mississippi. He was never too busy to direct clinics fwithout payj, serve as guest conductor, and be helpful to any band or bandmaster. Composer, clinician, adjudicator, guest conductor, a nationally known and respected Music Educator and member of A.B.A. and many other professional organi- zations-Mr. Kooyman is revered by every band director, in and out of Mississippi, who is familiar with his very, very great contributions to the development of America's School Music program.
