Since the begin- ning of the 1970 school year, he has played an important part in Firestone ' s academic and social life. He has initi- ated several changes enabling Firestone to conduct its business more efficiently. Mr. Friedman taught English and jour- nalism at Kenmore High School for nine years. He became the assistant princi- pal of Kenmore in 1963. Mr. Friedman is quoted as saying, Man ' s greatest gift is his children. I ' m fortunate that I shall have a very large family and my only reason for existing is to serve the needs of my Firestone family. Whether he is seen in serious consul- tation with a teacher, advising a student, or dancing merrily at a pep assembly, Mr. Joseph Friedman commands the respect and admiration of the faculty and student body. 18 Dedicated to Firestone 19 Changes in Administration CALVIN TRITT Heidelberg College Kent State University Mr. Calvin Tritt, assistant principal, constantly strives to create and improve an atmosphere that encourages learning. He also handles the bookstore as well as being in charge of the distribution of students ' text books. Mr. Tritt has been assistant principal at Firestone since the opening of the school in 1962. A shift of responsibilities has taken place in the administration of FHS. This year, Mr. Michael Barich is charged with the handling of all disciplinary and attendance problems that occur through- out the day. With the assistance of his secretary, Mrs. Joyce Ewell (pictured on page 23), Mr. Barich keeps the attend- ance procedures at Firestone running smoothly and efficiently. MICHAEL M. BARICH University of Akron 20 Seek D iscipline and Organization INEZ SCHMIDT ALICE SCOVILLE The office remains organized and efficient thanks to FHS secretaries Mrs. Jeanette Mirman, Mrs. Inez Schmidt and Mrs. Alice Scoville. Incoming phone calls, appointments for Mr. Friedman and Mr. Tritt, report cards and complaints are all part of the job of the secretaries at Firestone. JEANETTE MIRMAN 21 Counselors Extend Guiding Hand RUTH ARLINE COURTNEY Mount Union College Case Western Reserve University of Pittsburgh PHYLLIS JAY LERCH University of Akron Counseling is essential to the high school student. Miss Phyllis Lerch, Miss Ruth Courtney and Mr. Kay Fluke constitute the guidance team at Firestone. As the sophomores find themselves in the midst of new and strange surroundings, the counselors guide them to the proper selection of courses of study for their high school years. They help juniors to recognize the many oppor- tunities of the future. When seniors are faced with the task of selecting a college or profession, they, too, are aided by the counselors. Members of the English department teach basic literature to most sophomore classes and American literature to juniors and sophomore honors classes. In the past, senior and junior honors classes studied English literature. This has been changed so that seniors may now choose World literature, practical English or journalism for their English requirement. In addition to regular English classes, Mr. David Robb and Firestone ' s debate coach, Mr. Thomas Smith, teach speech and drama. Miss Nancy Mettler and Mr. John Vandever are in charge of literary seminar. Mrs. Ruth Nilsson is the new Volplane advisor and Miss Joann Detzel is the newspaper advisor. Miss Detzel, Mrs. Darlene Troyer and Mr. Robert Schlemmer are newcomers to Firestone ' s English department. One such play, Prodigal School, was written by Barry Peterson and performed at lunchtime for interested students. This year ' s major production Stardust, a joint effort of teachers, students and PTA parents, was a one-night performance. Mr. Garrett, Sherri Liberman and Mrs. Richardson discuss the possibility of an affair between teacher and student in Stardust roles. 56 More Than Meets the Eye STAGE CREW - Front Row: R. Campbell, S. Falcons Repeat Gridiron Success With Playoff Berth Combined efforts of manpower and mental attitude gave the 1970 football squad the necessary momentum to provide Firestone with a successful gridiron season, and their second consecutive playoff berth. Opening the regular season in a three string defeat to Garfield, Ellet and Cuyahoga Falls, the Falcons were held scoreless. The squad soon recovered with both a winning offense and defense in consecutive victories over the Big Blue of South, the combined Central-Hower Eagles, and arch-rival Buchtel Griffins. Dealt a disappointing 12-0 loss by East for the homecoming, the Big Green Machine took revenge on the North Vikings on a 28-0 shutout, a highlight of the season. This year ' s team was centered on a relatively small twelve man nucleus of seniors: Gary Church, Steve Rich- ardson, Paul Brown, Jerry Shane, Mercury Morris, Dave Voss, Scott Nelson, Ron Shoop, Steve Spelman, Jeff Mer- row, Jeff Prinz and John Benninger. This core was backed by an exceptionally fine squad of juniors and sophomores, providing for a promising 1971 football season. Team honors included Most Valuable, Dave Voss and Jeff Merrow; Most Improved, Jeff Prinz; Best Offensive Lineman, Jerry Shane; Best Defensive Lineman, Jeff Mer- row; Best Offensive Back, Gary Church; Best Defensive Back, Rick Oldfield and Ron Shoop; the Dedication Award was presented to captain Paul Brown. Area coaches and sportswriters honored Firestone with many all-competition positions on both the local and regional levels. Seniors Jeff Prinz, Gary Church, Jeff Merrow and Steve Spelman received All-City awards on the first team, with Merrow as defensive captain. Juniors Jack Recht and Rick Oldfield were given second team and honorable mention, respectively. On the All-District list were Jeff Merrow, first team; Gary Church, second team; with Steve Spelman and Jeff Prinz winning honorable mention. Merrow also took first team Northeastern-Ohio and second team All-State as a defensive tackle. Guiding the squad was head coach Robert Wallace with the aid of coaches Dave Marshall and Jerry Sipka. Coaches Ron Laubaugh, Harry Welling, Tom Floyd and assistants Ron Jackson, Tom Cargo, and Tom Zateslo totaled the complete coaching staff. An additional boost was given by managers Bill Ritter, Jerry Lesnick, Tim Dolwick, Ed Hurst, and Scott Harpo Dietchman. This combination of a dedicated staff and squad gave Firestone an aggressive football team. The beauty of suc- cess resides in victories over opponents once considered superior. Firestone ' s gridiron ability continues to mount as the years pass. 124 MANAGERS - Front Row: S. Deitchman, E. Hurst. Second Row J. Lesnick, B. Ritter, T. Dolwick. COACHING STAFF - D. Marshall, H. Recognition increased as the team rose in the local stand- ings to a position second in the area. As reg- ular season play came to an end, Firestone ' s place in the city competition was firmly established. The battle for city honors was between Central-Hower, Buchtel, South and Firestone. The Falcons finished their regularly scheduled season with a tight but mighty victory over Central-Hower, who later went on to semi-final action in state competition. In the city series playoffs our ball han- dlers gained a much desired revenge over Buchtel by ending their play in the city with a decisive 53-51 victory. Firestone went on to meet South in the finals; although in the end South ' s pressure playing won out. The 70-71 senior team started playing together as sophomores on the junior varsity and gained varsity experience during their junior year. Time spent during these two years combined with work done by the seniors was responsible for the successful season. Coach Heideman credited Firestone ' s triumphant season on the player ' s sacrifice of personal glory for the good of the team. Suppying the backbone for the team were seniors John VanAuker, Ken Larson and Andy Kusyner. VanAuker received rec- ognition on the 1st team All-City, 1st Beacon Journal team and 2nd team All-District. Larson gained a position on the second team All-City, and Kusyner was named for an honorable mention All-City. Completing the starting lineup were junior John Singer and seniors Craig Belair and Tom Jenkins. This was Bill Heideman ' s first year as head coach. To add to his problems as a new coach, he spent part of the season coaching from a hospital bed with the aid of a video- type camera. However, back at school, as- sistant coaches Bob Davis and Joe Webb with the assistance of managers Tom Davis, Mark Allen, Greg Baker and Jerry Lesnick (head manager) led the team towards its success. In their second year under Coach Ron Lau- baugh the team demonstrated strength in the lightweight divisions with a good back-up in the middleweight and heavyweight catagories. Two starters were lost in the middle of the season, but the grapplers held strong throughout the meets to defeat such opponets as West-side rival Buchtel and last year ' s title holder, North. At the end of the season Firestone placed third in all Akron area schools and held the city- series wrestling championship. Taking first place were three varsity wrestlers, Chad McClenathen, Frank Herman and senior capt. Bill Baird who were undefeated in city competition. The squad promises to be exceptionally strong next year, after losing only two senior starters, Bill Baird and Denny Thompkins. The reorganization was highlighted by the fact that over half of the swimmers were first year members of the Fire- stone swim team. For such a young team the record estab- lished was quite impressive. Compiling an overall record of 17 wins and six losses, the team went on to demon- strate their control over the greater Akron swimming pro- gram with another city title. Final performances of the year were in the District and State meets with placings of second and ninth respectively. The season can be described as wet and wild as many meets were decided in the last event. Firestone ' s representatives at the state level were: Finalists: 200 yd. Medley relay — Keith Landsness, Doug Spin- dler, Chris Schubert and Szabolcs Batizy. 5th Place 200 yd. Individual Medley — S. Batizy. 5th Place 1 Meter Diving — Roger Blocher. 6th Place Qualifiers: 200 and 400 yd. Freestyle — Bill Jones. 400 yd. Freestyle Relay — Doug Spindler, Chris Schu- bert, Stasie Nicholaides and Ken Gast. There were several outstanding swimmers this year representing all three classes. Senior Szabolcs Batizy, whose chances for a State title were hampered by an ill- ness prior to the State meet, was a valuable member of the team capable of swimming all strokes in all events. Senior Chris Schubert, recipient of the Jack Taylor Award, was a strong member of the team, both physically and mentally. In the State meet he participated in both relays giving up all chances for individual honors. Senior diver Roger Blocher proved to be a consistent scorer by win- ning 12 of 14 meets prior to the District and State com- petition. Strongest representatives from the junior class were freestyler Doug Spindler and backstroker Keith Landsness. Bill Jones stood out from the sophomore ranks. Completing the new team were coaches Pat McDonald, fresh from Buchtel and Pete Boggs, fresh from the Air Force. Coach McDonald ' s first year efforts at Firestone are well illustrated by his team ' s noted accomplishments (not to forget the arrival of his first child, Beth Ann). Team managers were sophomore Neil Goldberg and junior Steve Walrafen. Coach McDonald calls the signals. tt-.it . ■ Swimmers psyche-up on way to meet. Falcon trackmen revealed a frustrating 3-8 record in the ' 71 dual track meets. However, they regained their footing in the more important relay, sectional and city meets. Placing fourth out of a large field in the Greater Akron Relays, the cindermen then continued to take another fourth of sixteen teams in the Western Reserve Relays. In the Sectional meet, individual performances marked the day. Dan Umansky was sectional champion in the discus, the 880 relay team of Sweeney, Finn, Spelman and Nygaard placed third, John Robin- son also took third in the mile and Nick Buian placed third in the grueling two mile run. In the city championship meet, Firestone Thinclads hustled to third place in tough competition. In the spotlight were John Robinson and Steve Sanders as city champs in the mile and two mile, respectively. Ron Shoop arched second in the pole vault, while Nick Buian ran third in the two mile. The mile relay team of Otto, Nygaard, Finn and Sweeney placed third, and Bob Otto leapt for third honors in long jumping. Under this year ' s direction of coaches Don Hammett and Bill Heideman, five new school records were set by Jack Recht in the high jump, Stasie Nicholaides in the shotput, Steve Spel- man in high hurdles, Bob Otto broke his own record in long jump and the 880 relay team made a new Firestone speed record. 144 Distance men Steve Sanders and Nick Buian lead the pack. Chalking up another winning season with an overall record of 17-8, this year ' s basemen missed the city series playoffs by one game. This was the third consecutive winning season since the arrival of coach Dave Marshall. The team ' s success was attributed to a composite of a field of able underclassmen led by a strong core of fine seniors. Leav- ing the team are graduates Tom Jenkins, Rick Matvey, Steve Richardson, Denny Schriener, Dave Voss, Mark Wisberger and Larry Wolfe. One exciting event occurred during the Kenmore game when Voss did it all by scoring both of Firestone ' s runs with a home run and a sacrifice fly, while pitching the game. Another triumph was the overtake of East for the first time in four years. At the awards banquet Most Improved Player was shared by Paul Pangle and John Singer. Larry Wolfe received Best Defense, and Denny Schriener was awarded Best Offense. Steve Richardson was named Most Valuable Player. Third year trophies were given to Richardson and Schriener, who maintained the highest overall batting averages of .419 and .375, respectively. Next year ' s team promises a great season with eight returning lettermen and other capable prospective ballplayers. 1971 VARSITY BASEBALL RECORD Firestone Green 18 Firestone 14 Green 3 Firestone 8 Central-Hower 6 Firestone 10 South 3 Firestone 4 Tallmadge 5 Firestone 6 Springfield 5 Firestone 11 Buchtel 1 Firestone 2 Central-Hower 3 Firestone 14 Revere 6 Firestone 2 Kenmore 1 Firestone 3 North 21 Firestone 8 Woodrid ge 6 Firestone 12 Hoban 3 Firestone 12 Woodridge 4 Firestone 12 Highland 7 Firestone 6 Ellet 8 Firestone 5 Cuyahoga Falls 19 Firestone 4 Tallmadge 3 Firestone 10 St. Vincent 2 Firestone 4 Garfield Firestone 9 Copley 1 Firestone 1 Buchtel 5 Firestone 3 Walsh 4 Firestone 13 East Season Record: 17-8 146 Hitting hard gives Denny Schriener his high average. Mr. Dave Robb served as senior class advisor for the first time. These leaders with the class committee chair- men were a dedicated team who suggested new and different projects for the seniors to undertake. Upperclassmen concentrated on service projects by collecting toys for Akron ' s needy children and partici- pating in the canned-food drive during the holiday season. These and other activities aided the class in realizing the importance of helping others who are less fortunate. Traditional activities unified the class. Although many seniors had black-and-blue knees from roller- skating, they enjoyed being together as a class. Elmer Rice ' s seven scene play The Adding Machine is a realistic yet expressionistic drama depicting the tragic alienation of man. The main character, Mr. Zero, a spine- less shell of a man, leads a quiet life of desperation as an accountant for twenty-five years. Just as he thinks he has accumulated enough courage to demand a raise from his boss, the administrator appears and informs Zero that he is being replaced by a modern, efficient adding machine. Zero cannot handle the shock of this harsh reality, and in a fierce act of revenge he kills his boss. Zero is tried for his violent crime, receives the death penalty, is buried and rises from the grave. He is sent to the Elysian Fields, which first appears to be a peaceful, pleasant place but later proves to be like the planet earth. When he realizes this, he leaves and finds himself in an office operating a gigantic adding machine. A lieutenant informs Zero that it is time to return to earth. Zero does not want to return to the planet where he knew misery but is told he has no choice, for he will be born again and his soul will be serviced, repaired and used over for the 50,000th time. He learns thai there af% two types of souls: the type that gets better each time and the type like Zero ' s that gets progressively worse. In progressing, man has re- gressed, and in his world of machines, he has become a faceless creature lacking any real identity, a creature wandering aimlessly in search of himself. When Zero is sent back, he is given a girl to make his existence on earth more bearable. Her name is H-O-P-E and in her rests the future of mankind. 186 The Zeros after another dull day. Dedicated to the Class of 1971 Sit by my side, come as close as the air. Share in a memory of grey, And wander in my words. And dream about the Pictures that I play of changes. Green leaves of summer turn red in the fall, To brown and to yellow they fade; And then they have to die, trapped within the Circle time parade of changes. Scenes of my young years were warm in my mind, Visions of shadows that shine. Till one day I returned and found they were the Victims of the vines of changes. The world ' s spinning madly, it drifts in the dark, Swings through a hollow of haze. A race around the stars, a journey through the Universe ablaze with changes. 202 Moments of magic will glow in the night. All fears of the forest are gone. But when the morning breaks, they ' re swept away by Golden drops of dawn of changes. Passions will part to a strange melody As fires will sometimes burn cold. Like petals in the wind, we ' re puppets to the Silver strings of souls of changes. Words by Phil Ochs Courtesy BARRICADE MUSIC, INC., New York, N.Y. However, the novelty soon wore off and we found ourselves in a position of immense responsibility, committed to the publication of a 232-page book. Despite staff disagreements, staff incompetence, inexperience, personal conflicts and rushed deadlines, we feel we have compiled an accurate record of the 70-71 school year. In keeping with our theme of change, we strived to change the yearbook itself to make it as unique as was the year. The most conspicuous innovation is in the faculty section where candids were used in lieu of the traditional portrait pictures. Through such new and creative ideas our staff portrayed the ever whirling wheels of change at work in Firestone. And in our work we discovered the backbone of change is the individual. ty f v- Professional Photographer Carpenter ' s Studio Staff Photographers Leonard M. Winer Asst. Bill Coulter Asst.
