Tape measure in hand, Mrs. Smith gives Kathy McMullen some professional advice. Vocational Arts- Learning by Doing Firestone offers a wide variety of courses to develop manual skills in the Commercial Arts Department. Teaching in this section are Mr. Paul McKeever, Mrs. Vivian Gillman, and Mrs. Evelyn Smith. Mr. McKeever instructs students in mechanical drawing, wood shop, and metal shop. These classes are in planning, design, and construction. Food classes are taught by Mrs. Vivian Gillman. The girls in her classes learn the basics of nutrition and how to prepare food. Mrs. Smith teaches clothing and home decorating classes in which one learns how to create her own clothing and decorate her home. So that ' s what they do in mechanical drawing! 28

The 1 fine arts department develops an appre- ciation of culture in the students at Firestone. The art department teaches courses in art appre- ciation, drawing design, painting, crafts and sculpture. These classes are taught by Mr. Denis Chasek and Mr. Jere Culver. Students also have a variety of music classes from which they can choose. These are choir, music theory, and music history taught by Mr. Arnold Thomas. Mr. Joseph Lentine teaches band and orchestra. U of Akron BEATRICE LAATSCH U. of Akron Business Courses Prepare Students for the Future Typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping are the three commercial subjects taught by Mrs. Ida Jack, Mrs. Beatrice Laatch, and Mr. Gilbert Katz. These subjects help to prepare students who are planning a career in business and also to equip the college-bound student with skills neces- sary to continue his studies. Typing and shorthand are taught by Mrs. Jack and Mrs. Laatch. Mr. Katz teaches bookkeeping. Mrs. Jack twiddles her thumbs while her class slaves away. Hard at work in the staff room. Mr. Katz always prepares ahead of time for class. •29
