No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend ' s or of thine own were. Any man ' s death diminishes me because I am involved in man- kind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee . . . John Donne Self-Expression-Doing Everyday 1969-70 offered students at FHS more opportunities to express them- selves than ever before. In addition to the traditional classes and activi- ties, such innovations as the study carrels, the students lounge, and open lunch periods were provided to give a greater choice in the use of free time. Optional study halls and open library privileges, as well as the new courses such as Russian and drama, were available to further the special interests of individual students. Each Falcon ' s preference in hair- style, clothing, and general appear- ance brought a greater variety and diversification to the school scene. Things in Your Own Way ;B WN W rV f r-i 2 i- %£$ jam Individuality Extends Throughout the Entire Day, 10 in Every Class, Club, or Dance For the Firestone Falcons, expressing themselves was a full time occupation. Throughout each school day students concentrated on their own particiular interests. Lunch periods became a time for intramurals, ticket selling, last minute studying, and occasional relaxing. After school hours were filled with club meetings, sign painting, decorating, sell- ing candy, and other assorted activities. Falcons, however, think the best way to express themselves is to enjoy them- selves — and students at FHS went from a Hawaiian luau to roller skating parties to formal dances doing exactly that. 11 Spirit Is the Magic Potion That Produces Cooperation Spirit is the single element that most Falcons seem to have in com- mon. It works as the main force be- hind that formation of a cooperative student body. This spirit is expressed in many different places, at many different times ; but it is best shown at the end of a game or pep assembly when everyone joins in shouting the last line of the alma mater, All hail to the Green and Gold. •12 13 14 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY 15 Mr. William Tenney has been the principal of Firestone High for four years. During these years Mr. Tenney ' s leadership has enabled the school to make advances in all areas. He has improved student-administra- tion relations by helping to create new pro- grams such as the student center and the open-lunch periods. Before coming to Fire- stone, Mr. Tenney was principal of Akron Evening High School, Secondary Summer Schools, and Jennings Junior High. Mr. Ten- ney ' s many accomplishments have earned him the admiration and respect of the entire student body. The Office-Catalyst Mr. Calvin Tritt has been the assistant principal at Firestone High School since its beginning in 1962. As assistant prin- cipal he is concerned with student disci- pline, the payment of delinquent fees, operation of the book store, and the handling of textbooks. Mr. Tritt is always working to improve the attitude and atmosphere of Firestone. PHYLLIS LERCH The counseling staff at Firestone is always available in time of need. Students can always depend on its members to help with both their academic and personal problems. The staff is made up of Miss Ruth Courtney, Mr. Kay Fluke, and Miss Phyllis Lerch. Secretaries Mrs. Inez Schmidt, Mrs. Suzanne Fischer, and Mrs. Alice Scoville keep the office running smoothly and help Principal Tenney run the school efficiently. for All School Functions KAY FLUKE RUTH COURTNEY ALICE SCOVILLE SUZANNE FISCHER 17 INEZ SCHMIDT SANDRA KENT U. of Wisconsin EARL LOVE Kent State U. Students also have an oppor- tunity to impr ove their vocabularies, usage, and writing and verbal skills. Sophomore classes are taught by Mr. Earl Love, Mrs. Ruth Nilsson, and Mr. David Robb. Most juniors and the sophomore honor classes study American literature with Mrs. Florence Rosenfeld, Mr. Richard Pasher, and Mr. Thomas Smith. Miss Nancy Mettler, Mrs. Margaret Van- Horne, Mr. John Vandever, Mrs. Sandra Kent, and Mr. Robb teach English literature to seniors and junior honor students. Senior honors and advanced placement classes study world literature under Mr. Vandever and Miss Mettler. Mr. Smith has classes in drama and speech. He also conducts an independent reading seminar and is coach of the debate team. As well as teaching sophomore English, Mr. Love is the adviser of the visual aids department. Akron U. classes, city-wide grade and junior high schools, and adult astronomy classes all use the planetarium. Informative lectures about the stars are given every week-day by Mr. Donald Hammett. The fifty-foot dome of the planetarium enables students to see stars which are not always visible in the sky over an urban area such as ours. The Firestone library has become much more than just a storage room for books. Under the guidance of Miss Virginia Himebaugh, the library has acquired many kinds of visual and audio equipment such as stereo tape equipment, slide making ektographs, copy press, and film strip viewers. New this year is a microfilm pro- jector. This machine enables the li- brary to easily store information that originally appeared in newspapers and magazines. Magazines, newspapers, and over 9,000 books are circulated through the library. It is now also possible to bor- row on e of the many stereo recordings that are in the library. Miss Himebaugh investigates the new visual aids equipment in the library. VIRGINIA HIMEBAUGH U. of Akron Western Reserve U. Mrs. Deihl enjoys keeping track of overdue books. Filmstrip viewers enable students to make up missed work. 21 Mr. Mack takes a back seat during a thrilling oral report. Social Studies is a required subject for all students every year. Sopho- mores study either world geography or world history; juniors take Ameri- can history ; seniors take on problems of democracy. Electives in this de- partment include sociology, world geography and economics. Teaching P.O.D. are Mr. Michael Barich, Mr. Ronald Snider and Mr. David Marshall. Mrs. Mary Ann Ne- biker, Miss Jeanne Klocker and Mr. Alex Adams handle the American history classes, while Mrs. Virginia Barbieri, Miss Klocker and Mr. Rich- ard Mack teach world history. Business math and refresher math are taught by Mr. Glyn Parker. Mrs. Dorothy Vance, Mr. Virgil Yeynert, and Mr. Alex Rachita teach Algebra I and II, which emphasizes the understanding of abstract mathe- matics. Geometry, taught by Mr. Yey- nert, Mr. Rachita, and Mr. Waldemar Bender, stresses logical proof and sys- tematic thinking. This provides the background for more advanced math studies such as math analysis, taught by Mr. Rachita, and calculus, taught by Mr. Donald Nutter. Analysis is the study of analitical geometry and ele- mentary functions and serves as an introduction to calculus, which in- volves the concepts of limits and rates of change and differentiation. A proposal by senior Rick Sutton and a desire for more communication between students and faculty produced a unique student-teacher government and changes throughout the school. The new coalition, composed of ten teachers and ten students, altered many Firestone regulations that Student Council previously seemed unable to change. For the first time, students were allowed to use their own j udgment about the way they dressed. Open lunch periods provided more freedom of movement for all. The Coalition was also responsible for the operation of the student lounge and the hall-pass system. Coalition gives students more freedom in their dress and use of free time. 34 Becomes Bridge Over Troubled Waters Mr. Tenney listens to ideas and suggestions from Coalition members. Under the direction of Mr. Arnold Thomas and Mr. Joseph Lentine, the music depart- ment ' s production of Lerner and Loewe ' s Camelot, November 15, 21, and 22, truly carried out the theme of individualism. King Arthur ' s steadfast belief in honor, justice, and the worth of man against all opposition is both unique and inspiring. The play is set in medieval England where King Arthur, under the guidance of his tutor, Merlyn, is about to be married to Guenevere. Merlyn soon leaves Camelot, but Arthur follows his teachings by creating the Round Table, an institution that attracts the knight Lancelot. Lancelot and Guenevere fall in love, and Lancelot, condemned as a traitor, is forced to wage war on Arthur, destroying Camelot but not Arthur ' s ideals. Workers behind the scenes were Ann Davies, stage manager; Mr. Chasek, scenery design ; Mr. McKeever, scenery construction ; Mrs. Snell, tickets ; and Mrs. Moran, program. King Pellinore ' s arrival in Camelot baffles and amuses the townsfolk. Alone together, Guenevere and Lancelot (Steve Dagilis) acknowledge their love for each other. 54 Enchants and Enraptures Audience y  •■ King Arthur tries to ignore the love between Guenevere and Lancelot (Hon Sweet). S5 Audience Responds to Student r . as s There were some pretty weird acts in the Green and Gold Review, but this tops ' em all! Andy Dimit and Gordon Jones used tongue tying tactics in their baseball skit. Receiving constant backing from the stage band, Falcons presented their talents to the student body in the second Green and Gold Review May 23. Spon- sored by the music department under the direction of Mr. Joseph Lentine and Mr. Arnold Thomas, the show featured comedy skits, dancing, singing, and instrumental numbers. The Green and Gold Diggers were featured performers. Polly Porter belts it out at the talent show. They finished the season with a 4-4-1 overall record and a 3-3-1 City Series record. Also for the first time in school history the Falcons were the recipients of the tomahawk in the tradi- tional ceremonies after the game with arch-rival Buchtel. Their key to victory seemed to be the experience, conditioning, and dedication of the squad. The return of many lettermen helped Firestone to field strong units both offensively and defensively. Regardless of the absence of the Dirty Dozen unit, the Falcons produced many excellent defensive players. Such were tackle, Jeff Merrow; end, Greg Foreman ; linebackers, John Roetzel and John Guran ; and defensive backs Bill Forester and Gary Church. The season also showed fine offensive players. The usual offensive unit consisted of Tom Rozuk at quarterback; Bill Brownfield, center; Brad Horning and John Guran, guards ; Ed Pitman and Dan Riggs, tackles; Greg Timberlake, Pete Stoecklein and Jeff Mitchell, ends. In the backfield were fullback Steve Botnick and halfback Gary Church. Sharing the set- back position were Steve Spelman and Mike Cleary. Team honors included Most Valuable, Steve Bot- nick and John Guran ; Most Improved, Brad Horning ; Best Offensive Lineman, Ed Pittman ; Best Offensive Back, Gary Church ; Best Defensive Lineman, Greg Foreman ; and Best Defensive Back, Bill Forester. Six Falcons were selected to the All-City roster. John Guran was chosen a first team offensive guard. Greg Foreman, Jeff Merrow and Gary Church were picked for second team defensive end, defensive tackle, and defensive back respectively. Steve Bot- nick and Steve Spelman made the honorable mention list. In addition to the regulars, the Firestone coach- ing staff boasted a new member for the 1969 season. Coach Ron Laubaugh replaced last year ' s Tom Max- imovich and proved an asset to the team. Others providing leadership and assistance were Head Coach Robert Wallace and Coaches Gerald Sipka, David Marshall, and Thomas Floyd. Managing the team were Jerry Lesnick, Bill Ritter, and Tim Dolwick. The Coaches. The leading runners for the Harriers were seniors Jim Detweiler, 2nd in City, 10th in District; and Carl Yehnert, 3rd in City, 11th in District. Other outstanding seniors included Nick Lekas, 10th in City, 24th in District, and Chris Wolfe. More runners who contributed throughout the season were Ken Stanton, sophomores; Doug Shoup, junior; Steve Michael, senior; and Jim Psarras, senior. Suffering from a lack of returning starters, the Falcons were in a tight spot as were many of the City-Series teams at the outset of the season. This factor, combined with others, caused them to lose their opening two games to Walsh and North. At this point the Falcons seemed to take a back seat in the City-Series race. Refusing to be counted out, the roundballers came back to win five-consecutive games, three over top-ranked district teams: Gar- field, Stow, and Ilower. However, the Falcons later became victims of sporadic cold shooting and occasional careless playing which caused several disappointing losses through the remainder of the season. But excellence was often in the making as such teams as East, Kenmore, and Hoban fell to the powerful cagers. In one of the most excellent games of the season, one that was predicted as a close match, the Falcons shone brightly as they anihilated St. Vincent ' s. It seemed that the lucky basket was to haunt Firestone forever, when as in previous years the Barberton cagers whipped in the winning basket at the last possible moment. One of the outstanding factors in the Falcons games was their rebounding ability. They played many games where their height advantage was the winning factor. Although the Falcons were riding high on a crest of victories upon entering the play-offs, it seemed that fate was to hold them short of the champion- ship. They did defe at Hower in the season game, but the Bucs came back to hand the Falcons two heart- breaking losses in the Play-offs and the Sectional Tournament. The 1970 team was truly a team. Instead of playing as a few individual stars, they played as a unit, and when one player was down, there was always another to pick up the slack. At the annual awards banquet, Coach Alex Adams expressed his belief that the Best Team Players were Tom Rozuk, Ed Pittman, Don Hill, Ernie Puskas, and Steve Ostrov. Chris Wolfe re- ceived trophies for High-Scorer, Best Foul Shooter, and Hustler. In commendation for their outstanding boardwork, Hugh Pace and Ken Larson received the trophies for Best Defense. In addition, Hugh received the Clutch Award and Ken received the Sam M. Lesnick Dedication Award, a new one this year created by Coach Adams. By earning the Best Field-Goal Percentage tro- phy, John Van Auker was awarded the most Im- proved Player trophy. He also received a trophy for the Most Rebounds. Finally, John Singer received the Outstanding Sophomore award. As in years before, both Coach Adams and Coach Bill Heideman displayed their extreme closeness to the sport when tense moments came up in the games. Their excellent coaching abilities helped Firestone continue its winning tradition of basketball. 1970 JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM: B. Otto. E. Karam. M. Katxenmeyer, A. Gates, M. Adamek, S. This year ' s team boasted many veteran wrestlers, including Neal Sternberg, Jim Peterson, Bill Forester, Greg Forrhan, Bill Brown- field, and Bob Konstand. It was a year of team effort. The Falcon ' s shone under the guidance of Coach Ron Laubaugh. Although the Falcons did not go as far during the season as they wished, they did turn in a fine performance at the Western Reserve Quadrangular meet, placing first. The team also made a good show- ing at the sectional meet. Neal Sternberg and Jim Peterson placed second in the competition and Bill Baird placed fourth. Neal and Jim went on to district where Neal was the victim of a double elimination. Jim finished second again and advanced to state competition. Here he was finally defeated. Coach Wells has been invited to Columbia, South America, to coach the Antioquian District swim team in Medellin, Columbia. Here he will be working with a team in national and international competition. With an inspired team effort and the power of last year ' s state championship, the Falcons turned in another outstanding season. Under the fine coaching of Dick Wells, Dave Robb and Larry Zoller the Tankers rallied to first place in both city and district meets, and sixth place in the state. The victory over Ann Arbor Huron in Milan, Michigan, was considered to be the Falcons ' finest victory of the season. State champions, Ann Arbor had a 47 meet win- ning streak until the Falcons crossed state lines and defe ated them 55-50. Through the season the fine 400 yard freestyle relay consisting of Jeff Dillingham, Bryce Palchick, Brian Wilson and Doug Spindler seemed to be the deciding event in many meets. In the state meet the relay finished fifth in the finals. Junior, Szabolcs Batizy was considered the most impressive individual of the team. In district competition he broke the 200 yard individual medley record previously set by his brother, Arpad. At state Szabolcs took third in the 400 yard freestyle and fourth in the 200 individual medley. Besides participating in the 400 yard freestyle relay, co-captain Jeff Dillingham turned in fine performances in the 400 yard freestyle. His dedication helped to win him the Jack Taylor Memorial Award, given annually to the outstanding senior swimmer in the Akron Area. This year ' s diving team was regarded as the best ever in school history. With the superb coaching of Larry Zoller, the divers consisting of Bill Lekas, Brian Comunale and Roger Blocher, dove to many hard earned and record break- ing victories. Blocher and Comunale both placed in the state meet, taking 11th and 12th place respectively. Under the guiding hands of coaches Don Hammett and Bill Heideman the 1970 Firestone track team wrapped up a fine season with their best dual meet record ever of 4-1. In invitational meets, however, the Thinclads fell to a 5th place in the Hendricks Relays and a 4th in the Greater Akron Relays. The team ' s finest meet of the season was the victory over state-rated East. The victory was sparked by the record breaking performances of Steve Os- trov in the 100 and 220 yard dash. Steve set a time of 10.15 in the 100, and broke his old 220 record with a time of 22.5. Also breaking a record this year was Bob Otto in the long jump with a leap of 20 ' 5% . As always the distance events were a strong point in the Falcon attack. Top distance runners were Steve Michaels and Ken Stanton in the mile and Carl Yehnert, Nick Buian, and Steve Sanders in the two mile. In the city meet Steve Sanders placed first in the two mile with an outstanding time of 9:44. This led Steve to qualify in the district meet of regionals and later to state. The team achieved a position of Greater Akron Baseball League Percentage Champs with a 9-2 record, with a 12-7 overall record. However, East once again proved to be the spoiler as the Oriental ' s stopped the Falcons at the last possible moment — the championship game. The team came to the playoffs having suffered only one previous GAEL loss, to East. The Falcons entered the playoffs after a sensational win over Buchtel in which timely RBI ' s and good hitting were the keys to victory. In the playoff game, Firestone continued their streak by overpowering St. V. and upon entering the championship game the Falcons were riding high on a crest of four consecutive errorless games. East then managed to catch the team in a sudden slump. Errors and cold hitting haunted the Falcons and kept them from the top spot. On the bright side, the 1970 team boasted the best hitting averages in FHS history. In recognition of this, the top hitters, Hugh Pace and Steve Richardson received the Best Offense awards. Consistent team effort and ability were shown on the field, and for his part Jim Detweiler received the Best Defense award. Dan Riggs and Hugh Pace received the Most Valuable Player awards to round out the honors. The season was rewarding in still another way when three members of the team received city-wide honors. For his excellent record at first base Hugh Pace was named to the first team All-City squad. Likewise, Steve Richardson made the first team for his fine fielding, and Dan Riggs ' pitching earned him a spot on the second team. 1970 VARSITY BASKBALL TEAM: Front Row, J. Detweiler, B. The Netmen held their city series opponents to no more than two points in each match. The Falcons also shut out Hoban by the score of 5-0, leaving the Knights a goose egg to remember them by. Captain Jeff Denholm was a strong contender and made the finals in district competition. Along with Jeff in singles throughout the season were Bob Garfinkel and Larry Bowers. In the doubles matches the teams of Denny Tompkins and Bob Schott and Phil Bartholomae and Steve Kalkofen added many needed points. 1970 TENNIS TEAM: (not pictured) P. Bartholomae, L. Bowers, J. The team, coached by Donald Nutter turned in outstanding- performances throughout the season. The team ' s fine performances were led by Brian Jennings, Dave Thomas, and Bob Cooper who each won the medalist honors five, seven and two times respectively. Their overall record for the season was 16-4, carrying them right up to the state finals. In the City competition they were 10-1 and co-champs with the Falls and St. Vincent. An example of their excellent season showing came in the District match when both Jennings and Thomas had a 77, and Cooper shot a 78 and Mark Goldfarb fired an 81. In the championships in Columbus the team led the field by five strokes after the first round. It was only in the second round that victory eluded the Fal- cons when their scores failed to keep them beyond the competition. Bob Cooper puts his power behind a blistering drive. 1970 Golf Team: M.
