Mr, Franklin Bickfqrd Mr. Gordon Johnson Mr. Robert Olduker Biology, chemistry, physical science, and physics are the courses offered in the science department at Firestone. Biology, which is open to sophomores, gives the student a basic knowledge of nature, of the evolution of plant and animal life, and of the human anatomy, Chemistry, which is offered to iuniors and seniors, teaches the fundamentals of science, including such topics as basic elements, compounds, reactions and hydrocarbons, lt encour- ages the student to use his powers of reason. Physics, which is studied by seniors, deals with the properties and actions of matter and energy. Physical science combines basic chemistry and basic physics into a course designed to give an overall view of the essentials of science. The planetarium, operated by Mr. John Soroka, is used by the physics classes of Firestone and by other students in the city. lt allows the observer to scan the stars reflected from the fifty- foot dome. Elementary school pupils listen as Mr. John Soroka explains the workings of the plcmetarium. 4x

Mr. Donald Nutter Mathematics And Business Courses in algebra, plane. geometry, solid geometry, fifth-year math, and calculus are of- fered by the mathematics department, The goal of this department is to promote the application of the logic of math to the questions of everyday life. The essentials of abstract mathematics are taught in the algebra courses. Geometry forms a foundation for logical proof as well as for ad- vanced math courses. Fifth-year math, offered to honors seniors for the first time this year, is an in- troduction to calculus and is based on the set theory. Calculus, an advanced placement class, involves concepts such as limits, differentiation, and rates of change. Mr. Glyn Parker, pictured on page 22, teaches algebra and fifth-year math in addition to his science classes. Typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping, taught by Mrs. Beatrice Laatsch, Miss lla Shriver, and Miss Alma Talbot, are the commercial subiects open to Firestone students, The mastery of these skills is an essential time-saver in both college and business.
