Mrs. Judith Johnston Miss Diane Lorenz The primary objectives of the English department are to motivate students to do intelligent reading and to ex- pand their ability to convey ideas with clarity. To this end the department stresses literature and composition rather than grammar at the high school level. Studies include the reading of American, English, and world literatures. Analytic and critical composition relevant to the reading of the students is emphasized. Grammar is studied as its need is revealed in oral and written composition. Miss Ann Traub teaches English but is pictured on page 23 with the science teachers with whom she teaches the greater part of the day. The library aids the students and faculty in academic research in diversified areas. Required reading as well as independent study may be accomplished with the expand- ing facilities of the Firestone library and with the help of Miss Virginia Himebaugh, the librarian.
