talked most of the time, but did it slyly so as not be caught in the act by the teacher. This being over, the next fifteen minutes should have been given over to spelling, but our lesson was only assigned for the next day, so now we had about a half an hour of spare time, which we spent in getting our books ready for two hours of Bookkeeping. We all liked this period and worked diligently and almost before we knew it, it was 4 o'clock and time for chapel. Of course most every one went, but there is always a number who do not get around to go there every evening. Having two hours before our supper we went for a long walk which was refreshing and helped to work up a good appetite. We got back just in time for the first table. While we were having supper the boys, who were in the Assembly Hall, had all joined in a chorus and were singing some very good and appropriate songs. We enjoyed this very much and after they had finished we drew this little sketch in our memories, there to be stored away, for all time to come, and to serve as an occassional reminder of this one moment of our days at the college. After supper we girls studied for a while then went to bed at an early hour for the day had been very trying to most of us. At half past nine all lights went outg a Good Night was heard from each girl. Thus ended our first day of study and we hoped that the days to come would prove to be as full of happiness as this one. ing , and away she starts to explain the shorthand charac- ters, which prove to be very hard for some of us to under- stand. We had to read a little speech that was written in shorthand, and that was to be our transcript for the day. At 8:45 we all marched into the Assembly Hall to join in the chapel exercises. It was only 9 o'clock now and we were to have three more periods before dinner. The first was our typewriting hour and we went upstairs into the typewriting room, and in a very business-like manner got our machines into order and began our tran- scripts. Those transcripts proved very hard and some one Was continually whispering What is this crazy looking out- line? Thats age , said some one. I wondered where that came in at, but was relieved in a short while for Miss Pert- tula read to all, Age out, add it now . All the students looked up very much bewildered, and a giggle was heard in one corner and then all realize that it should have been, Nine men out of ten . This was a very interesting period and all were sorry when the bell was heard. The next was our Business Finnish class in Miss Kangas' room. Miss Kangas was very patient that day with us for it seemed that we did not pay much attention to the class work, especially after a girl sitting across from me, had noticed my unbuttoned shoes. I heard a giggle here and there and to my embarrassment all the eyes were turned to- wards my shoes. I looked down and what did I see? My unbuttoned shoes! I turned red with shame and excitement and tried to hide them, but it was of no use for every boy and girl had seen them and I felt disgraced on account of my carelessness. It was a relief for me when the bell was heard, and up I bounded as fast as I coud go, without making much noise, to my room where I found my chum in high spirits and I told her of all the excitement, for she had different classes during the morning and so missed it all. The time passed quickly and before we knew it, it was time for dinner. I tried to be as good as I could and suc- ceeded in my efforts quite well. After dinner school began at 1:15, then we had penman- ship for one half hour. The first set of writing was on the A's and B's and we were ever so busy trying to do our best. My chum and I were fortunate to get seats side by side. We 49
