SPEECH CLUB IS NOT DUMB The Speech Club is neither deaf, blind, nor dumb. They take what they hear and see and transmit their feelings on certain subjects through rhetoric. There are three categories of speaking: (l)oral interpretations, (2)original interpretations, and (3)extemporaneous speeches. The Speech Club exercised their skills in many tournaments throughout Ohio, including Little Districts at BGSU where they placed seventh, and Big Districts at OU where Bill Redpath placed 34th in the state. Although this club is open to anyone interested at the High School, it is not funded by such. The club raised money this year through bake sales at plays, selling charms at the Junior Highs and the High School, and by takng pictures at the prom. Mrs. Janelle Busdecker, Speech Club advisor, stated that in order to be in Speech Club, one must be dedicated, responsible, patient, and have strong desire to speak. The season which covered mid-October to mid-March was concluded with a joint banquet with the Debate Program. Members get entertained by a passing streaker. The Speech Club was spending most of its times looking for a room to meet in. Mrs. Busdecker, Theresa Roush, Bill Biehl, Linda England, Linda Ringle, Tom Williams, Bill Redpath, Carol Morman, Jenny Hopkins. 28

This year, the debate program worked on quality rather than quantity. With five varsity debaters, eight junior varsity debators, and ten classroom noncompetitors, they had to be good. All competitors parti- cipated in the Ohio High School Speech League. After many preparatory debate rounds in tournaments around the country the team of John Campbell and Brad Westall were able to take top honors in the state and will go on to National competition this summer. Other debators excelled in the many tournaments held throughout the year. Operating under the national topic Resolved: That the U.S. should significantly change the method of selecting presidential and vice presidential candidates, advisor Alvin Bell asked debate students in developing the six academic skills associated with forensics. These six are reasoning, analysis, use of evidence, organization, refutation, and public speaking. When one views the great advantages of mastering these skills, one realizes that the many hours put in and out of class preparing positive and negative arguments were entirely worthwhile. DEBATE We are all getting high, says Mr. Bell. Back Row: Andy Powell, Cathy Kline, Steve Dean, Patty Wittenmyer, Wayne Stacey, Mr. Bell. Front Row: Doug Wilkins, John Campbell, Kim Troutman, Max Pokrivchak. Oh, come on guys! Just because I'm a beginner! pleads Patty Wittenmyer. 29
