Second Row: Monty Gillett, Ralph Berry, Byron Wilford. I call this meeting to order! President Ralph Berry says, and thus the battle of rhetoric begins. Every other Thursday, the 65 members convened to realize the purpose of Student Council — to promote the general welfare of the students and school spirit, and foster better communications between students, faculty, and administration. Student Council's primary source of income is the concession stand operated during the football season. Some of the activities they carried out include: Free Form Education Day, the homecoming game, election, and parade, and other festivities. Whatever the activity, it was thoroughly discussed before it was put into action. Under the guidance of Miss Heskett, all involved not only accom- plished many beneficial projects, but, also, learned a great deal about the art of rhetoric and of parliamentarian procedure. I think I'm getting the hang of this, laughs Jane Haas. Togetherness makes Student Council a little more interesting. We have the ultimate solution Bill Kuhlman deducts. U ! 1 1 i I ! | mm 11 HEEL TOE, HEEL TOE The 1974-75 Findley High School Band and majorettes this season turned out many well put together performances. The majorettes put on performances in which if some people were music lovers they ask for an encore. Cindy Althaus helped add to the excitement and enjoyment as she was feature majorette. Not all people have that much coordi- nation. It takes a lot of work and they have to put much effort into it. These guys were determined and in the summer heat when we were swimming or enjoying the sun they were sweating their hearts out to make the people happy. If some of us live close to the school we can hear the windows shake from all that vibration of them tubas, horns, etc. They may get frustrated and angry when Mr. Koncik makes them do things for the 1000 and 1 time. But they stuck with things and worked hard at making the band a good one. Oh they probably had their bad moments. A few sour notes and all but they just kept on going like there was not even a mistake made but Mr. Kondik heard them. The band marched in parades, had a peanut sale to earn money for their own personal uses, and put on performances at the football games. But as the year went on you didn't hear to much of them because right now they're in hibernation for the coming year. You never know they may turn out a better year next year. Showing her music talent playing the flute is Deb Schultz. Ill pretend I didn't see that, replies the director of band Mr. Kondik. 'Put your money where your mouth is. says Kim Peters. 12 'Do you think they saw me do that? , smiles Vicki Ice. Selling peanuts for the peanut sale is Christy Combest and Deb Janosik. 13 Row One: M. As the season nears the team gets their individual goals. Being first in the BC, beating Moeller, having an undefeated season, possibly getting a crack at state. Kari Pejovich along with brother Tom approach pulpit during homecoming festi- vities for crowning of 1974 queen. The 1974 Homecoming was of formal dress this year. The crowning ceremonies took place before the game in which Lisa Smith was crowned the queen. Her court consisted of Teresa Cosiano, Patti Dysinger, Deb Lizotte, and Kari Pejovich. The other girls which were chosen but not serving on the court were Beth Hall, Vicki Ice, Claudia Mills, Sue Quel- horst, Andrea Westerhausen, and Angie Workman. Other girls being recognized were Key Club Sweet- heart Tina Klein and Varsity F Football Queen Deb Taylor. Following the homecoming game in which the Trojans won to Marion Harding 28-6 was the dance on Saturday night. The theme was 'Journey Through Time', in which the servers dressed in the fifties style, The band was of two personalities. The first half of the evening they were dressed in civilized clothes, playing down to earth music. During the later part of the dance the group slicked back their hair, playing Let's Go To The Hop. The Homecoming festivities for the 1974 school year is one of many to be remembered. May we hope to continue this in years to come. This years Dance and Concert Band at Findlay High School did a fine job in making people happy. They played at many places such as the basketball games. Yes, that was them playing when you heard the stripper . They also played at the Dance Concert making music for those who really got into Lawrence Welk music. They played other selections for those who did not get into Lawrence Welk so well. Many of those who are in Dance and Concert Band are in orchestra or band. I betcha I can blow harder and louder than you can, says the horn blowers of America. Dance Band saxophone players lay it on ya. 24 MUSIC IN ME Ok everybody have their earplugs? Ready? Don't look now but I think someone just went through here with no clothes c They like to spread themselves out where ever there is to make music. No matter where they spread themselves they blend in well. Their director Mr. Kondik had a lot of in- fluence on making it a good year. Either they were good and had it down pat or they called home and said they'd be late for supper. It's a good thing look how they turned out. Pretty good, wouldn't you say. D on't be shy my dear I'm only harmful on full moons! Boy my lips feel like they're going to grow around this horn. Says one of pep band members! This time lets get this right! 25 JUNIOR SENIOR CHOIR How long did he say we had to hold this note? gasps the sophomore choir. This years 1974-75 Junior Senior choir were very successful in their well put together and selections of music. As well as giving concerts they also put on a musical which was My Fair Lady. The director Mr. Jeffries had a big job in conducting a fine group of singers. They worked at putting together popular songs from the 70's to other selections from Bach, Braham, Schuman, and others. The choir made sure they all drank their lemon juice before each concert as to make sure the frog wasn't going to ruin their night out under lights. Looks like the lemon juice worked for we had many compliments on the fine work they did. Thanks to the Juniors and Seniors who participated in this years choir. Keep up the good work your all beautiful singers. Eat your heart out Elton John, plays Kevin Miles. No, It's the Chordettes. 27 SPEECH CLUB IS NOT DUMB The Speech Club is neither deaf, blind, nor dumb. They take what they hear and see and transmit their feelings on certain subjects through rhetoric. There are three categories of speaking: (l)oral interpretations, (2)original interpretations, and (3)extemporaneous speeches. The Speech Club exercised their skills in many tournaments throughout Ohio, including Little Districts at BGSU where they placed seventh, and Big Districts at OU where Bill Redpath placed 34th in the state. Although this club is open to anyone interested at the High School, it is not funded by such. The club raised money this year through bake sales at plays, selling charms at the Junior Highs and the High School, and by takng pictures at the prom. Mrs. Janelle Busdecker, Speech Club advisor, stated that in order to be in Speech Club, one must be dedicated, responsible, patient, and have strong desire to speak. The season which covered mid-October to mid-March was concluded with a joint banquet with the Debate Program. Members get entertained by a passing streaker. The Speech Club was spending most of its times looking for a room to meet in. Mrs. Busdecker, Theresa Roush, Bill Biehl, Linda England, Linda Ringle, Tom Williams, Bill Redpath, Carol Morman, Jenny Hopkins. 28 This year, the debate program worked on quality rather than quantity. With five varsity debaters, eight junior varsity debators, and ten classroom noncompetitors, they had to be good. All competitors parti- cipated in the Ohio High School Speech League. After many preparatory debate rounds in tournaments around the country the team of John Campbell and Brad Westall were able to take top honors in the state and will go on to National competition this summer. Other debators excelled in the many tournaments held throughout the year. Operating under the national topic Resolved: That the U.S. should significantly change the method of selecting presidential and vice presidential candidates, advisor Alvin Bell asked debate students in developing the six academic skills associated with forensics. These six are reasoning, analysis, use of evidence, organization, refutation, and public speaking. When one views the great advantages of mastering these skills, one realizes that the many hours put in and out of class preparing positive and negative arguments were entirely worthwhile. This consisted of securing advertise- ments to support the trip and an all-day workshop. What started as an experi- mental run, turned into reality, and as a result there are many things different about this yearbook. Because there were many novices on this trip we had some trouble getting off the ground. They soon learned, however, and will take the controls next year since seven of the experienced crew will have to re- tire. The actives for the year were a Santa Claus house during Christmas which gave the younger generation a place to go make their demands. Also another event for the children was an Easter egg hunt which turned out to be more challenging for the Varsity F member than 3g for the children. The big event of the year seems to be the initiations which took place three times a year. This is where all the new ath- letes are welcomed into the club. SPIRIT CLUB Spirit club is to be made up of girls who number any where from 30 to 75 and manage to meet once a week with out any dominating officers. They are the ones that always seem to be around to cheer on athletes of all sports. They decorate the lockers of the young men and even sometimes decorate their homes. Milne. Mrs. Gebhardt directed the twenty cast mem- bers into producing a very humerous play. The pro- duction staff and the Carpentry class also deserve much acknowledgements and thanks for all their hard work. The House at Pooh Corner takes place in the forest of young Christopher Robin's imagina- tion during Autumn. Winnie-the-Pooh and all of Christopher Robin's friends appear in this play along with the addition of Tigger. Tigger played by Chris Greeno, is the center of attention. Many of the problems that arise in the woods are caused by Tigger not having a house to live in but wanting one very much. The animals are also con- fronted with the problem of Christopher Robin going away to get an education, thus leaving them all alone in the woods. For those who attended this terrific performance, we hope you enjoyed it. And for those of you who missed the performance you missed a great night of fun and enjoyment. But that's the breaks so pass it on not to miss another performance put on by the Findlay High School Drama Club. My what big ears you have Pooh Bear. exclaims Tom Williams. Stop! After Alfred's lecture, the American millionaire died leaving Alfred four million dollars. The 130 students who performed and participated in the cast, chorus, and dancers all did a slendid job along with the music with was played by the orchestra and directed by Mr. Shell. ALPINE The 1974 winter formal for Findlay High School this year was provided by Junior Achievement. The theme was Alpine Holiday. Student Council paid $200 to help cover costs of the dance and Junior Achievement took care of the entertainment. The Bobby Nelson Quartet provided music for the evening. Sophomore girls worked as servers and dressed in different styles of costumes. Junior Achievement mem- bers served on committees also to help make the dance a more interesting event this year. Sophomore class servers Cindy Jaqua and Lori Ott help out on eating the cookies and drinking the punch at the formal. Helping out on the entertainment at the organ is Len Huston. HOLIDAY The decorations for the formal consisted of a snow scene. They used various decorations like snow- flakes, ski-lifts, and various other winter decora- tions to give the formal a more wintery atmo- sphere. Students from the class of 74 also attended the winter formal. Looks like they just can't stand to depart from the best school in the west. It told about his past and how he feels about the overcrowd- ed high school for whom he is the principal. Most likely in the past school year of 1974-1975 you heard the name Mr. John Stozich. If not, you're sure not a basketball fan. Even though Mr. Williams and Mr. Garnder didn't have their names and pictures in the Republican -Courier, your sure not to miss them! The team consists of Mrs. Boehringer, Mr. Fulmer, Mr. Gonso, Miss Heskett, Mr. Smith, and Mrs. Thomas. Their opponents are sopho- mores, juniors, and seniors at F.H.S. The object of the game is to see what guidance counselor can get his stu- dents through high school and headed into their future successfully. Mr. Gonso and Mrs. Boehringer, having seniors this year, will pass the finish line on June 6. The junior counselors, Miss Heskett and Mr. Fulmer are still participating hard with the giving of PSAT- NMSQT, SAT, and ACT tests. The sophomore counse- lors, Mr. Smith and Mrs. Thomas are really going at it, trying to guide their students into the right area. Some may choose a vocational area and others may see college in their future. I can't believe it, seven study halls in one day, checks Mr. Smith. Are you sure you want to take sewing?, Mrs. Boehringer questions John Courtney. Wish they had offered typing when I went to school, remarks Mr. Gonso. 59 JACK OF ALL TRADES Findlay High School has six outstanding women which help tremendously to keep the school running smoothly day in and day out. No, it is not the homecoming court, or the cheerleaders, or any of the female faculty, and it is not any of the girls on the Trojan Yearbook staff. They are the secretaries in the main office and in the guidance office. Three other terrific ladies are the operators and the nurse. The secretaries have their usual duties with typing, at- tendance, and assisting in any possible way. They also have been known to help sell and distribute yearbooks and sell tic kets for games. The operator assists out going and in coming callers to reach their party. The nurse helps the sick and injured throughout the day. Also she calls stu- dents in for a check-up sometime while they are at F.H.S. Mr. Hayes is always giving the secretaries a hard time! Being a large department with 16 teachers, there is an abundance of courses to choose from. Courses are available to any student going into any type of work. If a student does not plan to attend college, he may prepare himself in high school to go out in the business world. Business courses are also designed to give a student background to use in attending a business school after leaving high school. Business skills are used by many students to earn their way through college and realize they have these skills to fall back on. Special courses are also available to help a student seek employment before he leaves high school. In these courses such as Cooperative Office Education and Distributive Education, the student attends school for part of the day and works in a business related job the rest of the school day. 1. D. Findlay High School has four teachers instructing a drivers education course that will permit you to receive your drivers license in no time at all. Hours of classroom work, simulator, and actual driving of a car furnished by the local car dealers are used and taught. Driving rules, road signs, and driving procedures are all gone over very thoroughly to train students to be- come safe and efficient drivers. 1. M. VonStein 2. J. Larkins 3. J. Didich 4. R. I don't want anyone to be embarrassed in this class, chuckles Mr. Hoover. Today Health and Physical Fitness is an important part of everyone's life. Findlay High School has available both a fine Health and Physical Education program. Required courses during sophomore year in high school are a semester of both Health and Physical Education. In Health classes topics such as drug abuse, alcoholism, veneral disease, mental illness and sex education are discussed. These problems being a large hassle in the life of a teen-ager today help the student to face his or her difficulties and steer the student down the right path in life. Activities taught in the Physical Education Department have also kept up to date with golf, bowling, archery, badmitten, basketball, Softball, gymnastics, and weightlifting. The instructors of Health and Physical Education classes also devote much of their time coaching extra curricular activities at F.H.S. College-bound students are offered a large selection of courses study- ing the various ages of literature and perfecting the art of composition, such as Early American Litera- ture and Advanced Composition. For students who are exceptionally proficient in the area of English and have the proper attitude and ability. Honors English courses are offered upon recommendation. Other courses geared to individual interests are In- dustrial or Homemaker's English. For students re- quiring backgrounds in the basic English skills, a course in basic English is offered. All the courses are geared to provide for individual growth and de- velopment, to help a student in better understand- ing of the beliefs of others as well as applying those beliefs to himself. EXCHANGE OF THOUGHTS The Communications Department at F.H.S. explores all areas of the field, from drama to debating to journalism. Speech I II, taught by Mrs. Gebhardt, Mrs. Griffin, and Mrs. Busdeker concentrate on the art of learning to speak in a formal or informal manner. The curriculum used includes speeches and various tape assignments. Speech III IV, also taught by Mrs. Gebhardt, allow a student to choose his or her own projects within a certain area of study. Mrs. Gebhardt teaches Drama I II. Drama I con- centrates on acting itself while Drama II centers around the study of technical theatre. Mrs. Beck teaches Journalism, which concentrates on writing specifically for newspaper, magazines and other pub- lications. Debate I II are taught by Mr. Bell. Both of these full-year courses set out to achieve an under- standing of argumentation and logic pertaining to a national topic. Several classes added to the curri- culum this year included Oral Communications II and Mass Media. Oral Communications II deals with learning to communicate as individuals, while Mass Media places an emphasis on radio and television communications. Both classes have met with success and will be continued, keeping the curriculum of the Communications Department varied, individ- ualized, and extremely interesting. 1. J. Griffin 2. B. Gebhardt 3. The first change took place early in the school year with the leaving of Mrs. Sehnert who moved out of town. Miss Fredericka whom has been in charge of the resource center picked up her belongings and moved next door into the library. The open position in the recourse center was taken over by Mrs. Judy Purdy. The next major change that took place concerning the library and recourse center was the combining of the two. Although the physical atmosphere has not changed, Miss Fredericka and Mrs. Purdy work together as one unit. Their refered to as both librarians now instead one as a librarian and the other in charge of the recourse center. This combination has been named the Media Center. One of the new features the two librarians have formed is the display of many books on a specific topic. This display is set up for two weeks, then books on another area are put out. She really gets to me sometimes, Miss Fredericka mumbles about Mrs. Purdy. This year most of the teachers have made plans to further their knowledge during the sum- mer. Mrs. Hite who teaches French and Latin is in- terested in learning more about the culture of Sicily and its surrounding area. She hopes to visit an exchange student who once stayed at her home and meet his family. Mrs. Bumann, a German teacher is planning to attend a seminar with about fifty others to Vienna, Austra. They will be able to learn more on the cultures in Austria. Spanish teachers Mr. Frost and Mrs. Rear- don, are planning and hope to visit Mexico. Miss Coat- ney, however, is going to stay right here in the United States and very close to home. She will be working with a migrant program in Bowling Green. Once it was arithmatic, then it advanced to mathematics. The levels of mathematics have been climbing rapidly for many years. Findlay High School offers a large variety of these courses. Offered are: Business Arithmatic; Algebra I, II, and advanced; Geometry. Trigonometry; Probability and Statistics; Analyti- cal Geometry; and Calculas. Even though the high school offers a great variety of mathematics, one hardly needs to take any of these. For this is the year many students will look back on and remember the 'Calculator Craze'. At first it was talk about who had a calculator, towards the end of the year, the talk centered around who did not have or use one. The Technical- Vocational Department consisting of nine teachers, specializes in six areas of study. These areas are carpentry, blue print reading, welding, auto- motives, machine trades, and electronics. All the classes provide training to prepare the student to enter the world of work. The carpentry class did a large majority of the scenery used in the operetta and plays which F.H.S. drama department presented. They also built a house, outdoor shed, picnic tables, and many other skillful projects. Blue print readings main projects throughout the school year consisted of sketching house plans. In class the students learned many symbols and terms that represent the draftsman's language. Besides the class projects taught in welding class they con- structed candelstick holders, flower baskets, and nu- merous other items which were put on sale. The auto- motives class never ran out of cars to work on. Students, teachers, and parents sent their cars to these skillful guys to fix for only the cost of parts and not labor, which is very convenient with todays climbing prices. The electronics classes put their skills together in wiring the house which was made by the carpentry class. 1. P. Merrill 2. G. Giles 3. G. Shindeldecker 4. C. Bunn 5. G. Waldman 6. N. Pahl 7. D. There are three years of Biology. Biology I consists of insect collecting, tree and flower analysis, disection and many other biological studies. Biology I is mostly a sopho- more class with four teachers; Mr. Cashel, Mr. Barnhill, Mr. Reynolds, and Mr. Lenard. Biology II is involved in a more depth study of biology of which drawings play a major role. Biology III is an outside class based mostly around oronothology, or bird watching. Doc Phil- lips is the teacher for both Biology II and Biology HI. The second division is Chemistry, the science that deals with the composition, structure, and properties of sub- stances and of the transformations that they undergo. Chemistry I is involved with many labs dealing with the composition of materials. Chemistry teachers are Mr. Chapin and Mr. Gilligan. Mr. Gilligan also reaches Chem- istry II which is an independent study. The study is a majorly Qualitive Analysis. The last division is Physics, the fundamental science of the natural world. Physics, involves alot of labs and mathematical work. Mr. Steele is the teacher of Physics for his first year after teaching Science at Glenwood Junior High. All of these sciences have helped students at Findlay High climb to greater heights this year. 1. P. Chappin 2. J. Gilligan 3. J. Steele 4. T. Reynolds 5. T. Leonard 6. R. Phillips 7 . J. Barnhill 8. In addi- tion to American History on three levels, basic, college prepartory, and honors courses. World Geography, Sociol- ogy, World Affiars and Psychology are also offered. For next year a course centering around the American Consti- tution and various Supreme Court cases will be offered. All the courses use different methods of making them in- teresting: in Psychology, rats and mice are used in the study of behavior, and in several of the other courses map work is used extensively. Research papers are re- quired as part of the curriculum of several of the courses. All of them fulfill their goals of informing the student while still keeping the class an interesting part of the overall curriculum. Another major topic which made social studies courses more interesting was the discussion of cur- rent events. Many happenings took place during the past year which effected the student and his life. Facing the worlds problems and seeing how he and others can help means alot to many students. I. R. Fellows 2. F. DeFrench 3. J. King 4. S. Woods 5. M. Slough 6. S. Brewer 7. R. Montgomery 8. M. Their services while not always obvious, are the factors that hold F.H.S. together and make it an outstand- ing school in all aspects. Miles of floors and dirty windows pose no problem to them as they daily perform the tasks of cleaning and repairing. The custodial staff lends ladders and various tools to decorating committees. Getting the cafeteria prepared for extra curricular activities is another service they perform. The cafeteria staff work their hardest from around 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. five days a week. Preparing the scheduled lunches along with their extra goodies , such as cookies, pies, and cakes will always be much appreciated by the stomachs of students and faculty at F.H.S. T H E S P I A N S This year as in years past, Thespians put on two major productions, also a night of one act plays and in con- junction with the music department a musical. The first show of the season was a childrens production. Keeping a tradition started two years ago the first show is aimed at the elementary age children. House at Pooh Corner, perhaps the best of the Winnie the Pooh stories was well received by children and adults alike. Mrs. Griffin the newest member of the speech department at F.H.S. di- rected the second show. Harvey, the story of a 6ft. invisible rabbit was a smashing success. The first comedy in quite a few years was a welcome change for theatre goers. The triumph of the season, as usual was the musical. This year My Fair Lady won the overwhelming praise of three full houses. It was described as the best ever on the F.H.S. stage. New techniques in set and sound produced a very professional overall effect. Even as the final curtain closes the leads were invited to appear and perform at clubs throughout the city. The music and act- ing was superior and shall not be soon forgotten. For the graduating seniors it is a sad affair to play their final performance. Even if they never had a lead the F.H.S. theatre department shall be missed. The oncoming actors will have quite a job ahead of them to equal this year. They will try, fail and succeed. Each year new stars will bow out, but through all, the show must go on. First Row: Cam Hockason, Angie Beery, Judi Costio, Amy Frederick, Betti Flanagan, Lisa Waxier, Jeri Bjorling. Although goals and accomplishments were a bit abscure, club members had a memorable year. The monthly meetings will be missed by all who participated. Coregional Presidents Phil Chubb and Tom Leddy had this to say at the year's end — Although Club members will be going different directions through the years, memories will keep the Kingers' together. He had some quite noticable success, mostly due to the Sophomore interest. The Sandpipers accomplished quite a few of their goals, like decorating lockers, acting as timers and score keepers, bake sales for money, and even a Swim Night after the season was over to help cover expenses. The most important achievement was the encouragement for the swimmers. Swimming not being as popular at F.H.S. as football and basketball doesn't get the moral support that all sports need. The Sandpipers helped fulfill a large part of this. R Sandpipers wait patiently for poised swimmer to leave. 103 MEMORIALS DEATH Why be afraid of death, as though your life were breath? Death but annoints your eyes with clay. 0 glad surprise! Why should you be forlorn? Death only husks the corn Why should you fear to meet the thresher of the wheat? Is sleep a thing to dread? Yet sleeping you are dead Till you awake and rise, here, or beyond the skies. Why should it be a wrench to leave your wooden bench? Why not, with happy shout, run home when school is out? The dear ones left behind? Oh, foolish one and blind! A day and you will meet a night and you will greet. This is the death of death, to breathe away a breath And know the end of strife, and taste the deathless life And joy without a fear, and smile without a tear; And work, nor care to rest, and find the last the best. This year they became affiliated with the Ohio Student Library Assistants. Just some of their responsibilities entail checking materials in and out, handling student library passes, and shelfing books. Without them, FHS's students would be lost amidst a jungle of letters and numbers. RESOURCE CENTER ASSISTANTS - Resourceful LIBRARY ASSISTANTS PUT THEIR HEARTS i ON THE SHELF The Resource Student Assistant pro- gram is similar to that of the Library. These students aid Mrs. Purdy in her responsibilities in the Resource Center. Some of these are video-taping, dry mounting, cleaning and splicing films, supplying T.W. equipment and curric- ulum oriented books to teachers and students, and preparing original tapes for the school's use. In order to obtain their half credit they must rate satis- factorily on practical tests and in atti- tude and willingness.
