Although, unlike many games, this sport was not the result of a man sitting down with the intention of creating the rules and objectives, but was instead an evolutionary de elopment from ancient kicking contests. American football had chosen ovember 6, 1869 as its official birthday, for on that date Rutgers and Princeton met to battle awav with a pigskin, odd-shaped ball. They played witli few rules recognizable today, a little protection from bruising tackles, but this only goes to show that football is in a state of constan t creation. From its beginnings, football has been associated with the schools, as part of the educational process. This aspect of the sport has remained. Findlay High gridders were honored at a half-time celebration commemorating the anniversary. The team selected Marge Morgan as football queen. She was crowned at the ceremony. With the reverse in dating protocol in effect, both hoys and girls learned to appreciate their partners difficulties in asking and accepting or refusing a date. Some hoys were ensnared in the two-offer tra[). Many girls were overcome witii indecision or fear. Rut judging by the turnout, these minor difficulties did not stop them. The floor was crowded, the music was loud, but somehow she saw nothing but him. The conversation raced up and down iiundrcds of allevs. or drifted off as a couple danced in silent tlioughts. Jackie Lizotte. senicir. was chosen as the queen. Her rising laugh and li cly ways added to tlie gaiety of the festival. Mistletoe Magic caught each girl's fancv and convinced the boys. 13 Each iiidi idual holds, somewhere in his mind, an ideal, an aspect of perfection. Unfortunately, most will never realize dreams of utopia. but by staying dreams the do serve as catalysts for action and put meaning in the journey. We learned to love them. They were different from us. only because of their foreign accents, e saw through their presence how much alike we all were. Ue changed them. They changed us. Carmen. Gunther and Steve experienced every phase of American life from the family through the school. Thev enriched the community and were enriched by it. They saw the US first-hand, and were able to view their own countries in a new light, giving them an understanding of both. We learned about Costa Rican dances. Uragiiavan soccer teams, the conflict in Cyprus, and got a perspective of our country through foreign eyes. They were but momentary isitors. vet more than that. Members of the second and tliird ear Latin classes became Romans for an evening at tlic annual Latin banquet. Some enterprising seniors from Mrs. Sink's English classes donned Elizabethan garb and held a raucous feast. The young citizens of the short-lived neo-Roman state de 'oured paltr poultrv and imbibed vinum innicens inider the direction of a Caesar (Myron Shank) and Calpurnia (Jane Hymes) for a night. The English supped on roast beef and pork while being entertained bv court jesters, harp music (compliments of Judy Courtnev). and a skit of a take-off on Macbeth. Besides soloist and eombos. the entire junior honors Enc;lisli class performed an original skit about pollution tor which tlie were awarded the show's prize. A new junior high division was opened this ear to widen the field. The acts were varied and the c()in|ictiti( n was stiff. Proceeds went to the FS Club to help su|iport foreign students to Findla and I'HS students aiiroad. 23 With the entrance of a new decade, a new cause arose that was clianipioned by tliinking people around the world. It was not space exploration, nor a world-wide election, but a fight to save the world from the poisonous products of man's progress that threaten to destroy the beautv of Nature and the ability of the seas and the land to support life. On April 22. 1970. a major portion of the student bodv and faculty of FHS joined the battle against pollution. In a symbolic campaign on this Earth Day, hundreds arrived at school on bicycles, or roller skates, bv foot or canoe. i h - m Earth Day 24 Senior Ecology Day Petitions were circulated, and pleas were raised, as members of the Class of 1970 tried to cl the administration l(j srant Ihem a skip day . Although this request was out of the question the seniors were gi en a special opportunit ' to do somethino; constructi e. An honest effort to prove that Earth Day had been more than an isolated, insignificant incident. nearh six-hundred seniors participated in Ecology Day to help clean up the citv. and to beautify it by [jainling . and planting trees. Real concern was coupled with responsible action to make the endea or a success. ' hriniiin back memories of Medieval Days. 27 The creative junior decoration committee transformed the gvm into a castle of the Middle Ages. Nhstv bhies and greys recreated the mood of the courtyard complete with stars while mock pillars divided the inside of the room. The excitement of young love and new friendships gave the dancers a special mood. The dimlv lit room made it easy to drift into special thoughts. After the dance, post-prom activities included a movie, a fast dance, golfing at the driving range, a casino party and bowling. A breakfast at Camp Berry concluded the all-night festivities. If I I They Slay Dragons, Don't They? 28 29 Senior Assembly If The members of the graduating class of 1970 tried on their caps and gowns for the first time en masse at the Senior Assembly. The choir set the mood by singing Bridge over Troubled Water, and the four speakers, Ruth Ann Holzhauser, BiU Schuck, SaUy Wolfe and Stan Silverstein, delivered messages about the place of the individual in the coming years and what one might hope to accomplish. The turbulent heartbreak of war, the problems of over-population and pollution are facts of life that become plainer each day as the .seniors face the task of determining future purpo.se. The season of added experience helped the Harriers improve on tiie remarkable record of last year's team and shave seconds off their individual limes. The squad ended the season with a perlVct win record in seven dual starts. The Trojans have not lost a dual meet in (he lasl two years. Findlay took first place in tlic dislrici meet, and ninth in the regional races, hut tiie Buckeye (Conference crown proved to be too elusive for the squad again this year as they closed the season in fifth place. Junior Dennis Barnes was designated as the Most Valuable Performer on the team, racking up five first place times, including tops in the district tournament. Speedy sophomore Jeff Hochstettler earned second honors for the team, and set the new home track record at Hillcrest Golf Course. Besides creating stars of its own, cross-country running, because it requires speed and endurance, helps keep off-season athletes in top condition. Junior Varsity Several dozen sweet, mild-mannered sophomore boys turned out for August football practice. For most students the few final moments of summer vacation fly past all too s viftK : for these voung men. they were slowly counted off in terms of bruises and abrasions endured per hour of sweat-soaked practice. And when it was over, these sweet, mild-mannered bovs had gone the first step in becotning the fierce, aggressive men needed so desperately by the varsity squad. In seven contests the JV's battled to three victories, suffered three losses and fought to a draw once. Their defensive play was very good, according to Coaches Heater and Jones, and although offen.sive savvy came slow, the team becfan to score more at the end of the season, when the mistakes of inexperience and excitement occurred with less frequency, and as the bovs began to work together as a unit. V Cheerleaders Three jollv juniors and three spirited so[)homores composed the Junior Varsity cheerleading squad. They spearheaded spectator enthusiasm at JV fo(jthall and basketball games. The girls assisted the arsi(y cheerleaders throughout ihc year in promoting school spirit, and were responsible for sliakiiig the pepper out of the adult section at gridiron contests. Mrs. Needier served as advisor to the lively sextet, and with her iielp thev invented and organized their own cheers and routines. P. Pieracini, J. Schoonmaker, C. Wingo, P. Myers, C. Jaqua, M. St. Myer. Roundballers What greater achievement is there for a coach or a team than to build a championship squad. This is exactly what Coach Stozich and iiis roundballers did this year. W ith only one letterman returning and four sophomores on the varsity, the prospects of the season would not normally have been too bright; however, when that lone letterman was Greg Lishawa and the tliree sophomores pla ed together for three years on an undefeated junior high team, then the picture changes. The Trojans ended the regular season with a 13-5 record and went into tournament play where they added three more wins and the sectional crown before being stopped for the district title. Lish was named to the first all-conference team and junior -Steve Wenner made the second Buckeye Conference roster. The outstanding senior leaders, Jim Baron, John Poff and Lishawa sparked their teammates throughout the season. The squad's greatest asset was its teamwork. The individual [)layers improved tremendously as the year progressed, but more importantly, they played together as a unit. It was this teamwork that made this squad so remarkable. The reserve squad was then able to provide valuable playing experience for boys who would otherwise have had to wait. Even more important was the fact that their winning season (13-5) gave Ihcni tliat taste of victory that hopefulh will carr through to varsity plav. The highlight of the JV season was, according to Coach Lobb, the team's 'ictory over Marion Harding in double overtime. Judging bv the performances of the JV's. it would appear that Findlay High basketball teams will be strong and successful in the coming years. The sextet of varsity cheerleaders sparked the fight against this malady liere and proved that spirit was just as catching. The Pepper and . alt Clubs and the Sophomore Spirit dhih also helped fan the flames of partisan fervor that made foes dread Trojan Territory and energetic Findlay boosters filled the stands when the Blue and Gold took to the road. The spectator supporters were rewarded hv the excitement of ha ing two Trojan teams in tournament competition. Thanks to enthusiastic cheerleaders, spirit is alive and growing at FHS. 49 G. A. A. For many years it was a simple fact of FH S life that girls interested in competitive sports had to he satisfied with g rn-class contests or the vicarious thrill of watching the hoys go after the laurels. Of course Findlay has always had a girls' basketball team, which this year compiled a 5-3 record while having but two senior members, but something more was needed. So some interested, highly -developed athletic feminists sought to establish more girls' interscholastic sports programs. They succeeded in realizing a tennis team. I'nder the guidance of Coach Linda Andrews the girls put forth a 2-2 effort for their first season. It is hoped that more sports will have female squads in the future. 51 ROW ONE: M. Fritz, G. ROW FOUR: Coach Montgomery, Coach Heater. .After a slow start the Trojan WTestling squad ended the season with a 7-5 reeord and an optimistic hope for next year. Seven of the twelve grapplers were first-year men, mainly sophomores, which makes Coach Heater believe that future prospects are good, and the team's improvement was remarkable. Roger .Sheldon led the squad, placing second in Buckeye Conference, first in sectional, and fourth in district meets in his weight cla.ss. Don Whitman, Gene Suman. and Captain Bill Spoon took fourth place honors in their respective divisions in the Conference, while Frank Burke copped a sectional second and Captain John Salsbury won third. They were unable to retain the Buekeye Conference title, however, and ended in second place in that league. The team took fifth pt)sition in the district meet. Miraculously that monienluin carried into the spring, and was a significant factor in the play on the sandlots. According to Coach Curlis. in his second year as head mentor, the team felt it was going to be good from the beginning. The nucleus of the diamondmen had plaved together in the summer and brought the ACME state championships to Findlay. Somehow that spirit of victory was ever-present with the bovs, noticeable in practice and games. With eleven lettermen returning, the team played with the confidence of experience. It was obvious that the Blue and Gold was going far. They set two goals for themselves: the Buckeye Conference championship and the district title. As the season progressed Toledo Whitmer was anticipated as the toughest opponent. The victory over the Bulldogs inspired the team. The FHS diamondmen stood 10-3 before the tournaments. Their ball-handling know-how, exemplified by Keith Aerni, Best Defensive Player on the squad, and the powerful Trojan bats, led by .400+ hitter John Poff, combined and connected to bring home the sectional and district crowns. However, there seemed to be a mysterious fate surrounding a BC title, for that honor eluded the Diamondmen and every other Trojan athletic team this year. A dedicated FHS team managed a 7-3 outdoor record this season. From the outset, Coach Hoover expected this to be a season of building his inexperienced squad. Out of the first twelve matches, the Trojans netted but three victories; however, they clicked to win all four of their last matches and posted a fairly good record of 7-9 for the year. The biggest factor concerning the team was its youth. The top three men on the squad were sophomores, so, although this year was not as successful as Coach Hoover and his team would have liked, it did give them valuable experience for the coming seasons. And it must always be remembered that the scores and records will fade from the mind, but the memories of the experience and the lessons learned on the court or playing field are the reasons for having intcrscholastic sports. Finishing in the place cohimn in three different categories, second in Buckeye Conference play and second in the sectional and district matches, the Trojan linksters finished a successful season with a 7-1 -1 record. Tim Pfeiffer represented the team in the state tournament, winning medalist honors. Pfeiffer was also awarded the team prize for the lowest average. Senior Bruce Flack was selected as the most improved golfer. The Ben Hogan Award for a comeback after a serious injury was given to second-vear man Tom Drake who overcame critical injuries sustained in an automobile accident. New election methods enabled a more representative Student Council to take its place this year under the leadership of Stan Silverstein. The Council attempted to involve itself in the concerns of the school to help improve life at FHS. To this end several new programs were initiated. Heading the list was the abolition of the dress code, making any length hair and mode of dress acceptable. The SC also arranged for FHS to participate in a program of domestic exchange with a New York high school. Key Club The Key Club is an iiitcrtiatioiial orcranization for high school students, sponsored bv Kiwanis. The Key Ckib engages in manv activities to help improve the communitv. Its sole purpose is to give service freelv and unselfishly. This year the boys took on the sponsorship of a Chinese orphan in Hong Kong. They were also responsible for the .sale of stock to raise money for AFS exchange .students. and helped the Civic Mu.sic Association in an effort to bring different performing groups to Findlay. Selling the ba.sketball programs at each of the home games, sponsoring an after-the-game dance, and waiting tables at the annual awards banquet were the Club's other notable projects this year. National Honor Society Tho.se Findlay High students who have distinguished themsehes by scholarship, leadership, character, and service are eligible for membership in the National Honor Society. The Blue and Gold chapter of the nationwide organization was revived in May of 1969 h inducting fifty seniors and fiftv juniors. In the fall an additional thirt} seniors were selected for memi ership. A spring ceremony added fifty new juniors to the ranks. Membership in the society is recognized by colleges throughout the land, and one senior boy and one girl have an opportunity to apply for an NHS scholarsliip. Officers President M. The top debaters from two classes formed ihe four-man leams llial traveled the forensic tournament route from (lolumbus to Toledo, compiling a 44-37 record, riiey took the district championship by virtue of a sudden-death argue-off, and represented Findlay in the state meet. Debate is one subject where tire skills of manv areas are combined and applied: the logic of mathematics, the artfidness of English, and the tactural aspect of social science. To earn money to cover entry fees and lra eling expenses, the debaters sponsored the student-faculty basketball game this year. Besides going to competitions, some team members ga e brief demonstrations at Bluffton ( jllegc and at a Findla Rotary meeting. For the first time since an AFS chapter was establislied Iktc. FHS hosted three foreign students. Tlie guests were (barmen Aguilar from Costa Rica. Gunther Rotziiiger from Uruguay, and Stavros Peristiani, who was called Steve, froin Cyprus. The entire school benefited by their presence and participation in activities here. The club, made up of students who are interested in learning about other nations, peoples and cultures, was one of the largest and most active in the area. The programs of the bi-monlhl meetings were generally slide shows presented by visitors to other coiuitries: however, an effort was made to stay away from travelogues, and to emphasize understanding between people, the basic [)rinciple of AFS. Leaders Corps i 91 -£jse S( Pepper Club At Findlay Higli the words school spirit are synonoinoiis to most students with the words Pepper Ckib, probably the most beautifid booster organization in the Buckeye Conference. Its enthusiastic support of the Trojan roundballers is a boon not only to the spirits of the team itself, but also contributes a great deal to the responsiveness of the fans, all of which add up to make Findlay home courts a significant disadvantage to visiting teams. This year, under the leadership of president Jenny Compson and with the help of Mrs. Needier, the advisor, the girls appeared in new blouses this year. Several students help the librarians with the mammoth job of keeping tabs on all the volumes, checking them in and out, and taking attciulance. The volunteer assistants worked before and after school and during study mods. FNA Future Nurses of America is a voealioiial interest club, most of the members of which arc |)iaiuiing a career in the field of medicine. The club's basic programs consisted of speakers from the nursing and medical professions. During the (Christmas season a basket was given to a needv family. Future Teachers of America is an organization designed to promote interest in the teaching profession and to give guidance to high school students planning to major in education. The FTA Club here visited junior highs and elementary schools this vear to learn more about administration. Some of the members attended an FTA conference. They are skilled projectionists, but handle ta[)e-reeorders and record players with equal dexterity. Someone is always on call in the A-V room to help in times of crisis: when the celluloid goes on the rampage, etc. Their efforts were rewarded this year by a trip to W BGU-TV. The German Club was organized this year for those students interested in the German language and who wanted to [)artiei|)ate in additional activities for whicii limited class-time did not allow. Findlay High is able to provide much of this technical background to the young men enrolled in the different programs in the shop area of the school. For them Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, VICA, specializing in automotive trades, welding, carpentry, electronics, and machine shop, provides invaluable supervised educational experience in their future industrv-related fields. Majorettes The eight twirlers and strutters who led the marching band on the gridiron and the cobblestones were headed tliis year by two senior majorettes, Gwen Browne and Jeanne Kirch ner. Because there were so many talented people on the squad this year, Mike Brinker and Nancy Logsdon were both designated as featured twirlers . With its members attired in formal dress the orchestra looked as if it were a real sym[)hoin , and its performances ill .seven fidl svmjjhonic concerts a.ssnred the audiences that it was indeed. The orchestra traveled to Pittsburgh where it gave an outstanding performance at the Mid-East Clinic, receiving Bravos and standing applause. Twent -seven members of the full orchestra formed the accompaniment for the production of Camelot. Celia Jones was added to the staff and joined David Hanson on working witii the strings. .A bit of comedv vsas added to several concerts by the antics of the string bass octet that performed an original arrangc ment bv Mr. Hanson. 105 Always recognizable bv its smootii blend, tlie FHS dance band or pep band, as tlie occasion warrants, appears in various attire (from blue jeans and yellow sliirts to tuxedoes and formals) to provide music at almost any event, from basketball games to proms. Its members, among the finest in the music department, volunteer their time to get the experience in jazz and swing performance. Many display their versatility by doubling on different instruments. Dance Band 106 UJ£] Choir One of the largest in recent years, the junior-senior choir was also one of tlie youngest, hut according to Mr. Jefferies, its director, it performed witli finesse and a mature sound that comes from experience. From December on, the year was a whirlwind of events. The Christmas season was heralded bv many performances of the Caro leers, a select group of superior vocalists. The highlight of the vear was the March production of the Broadwav musical Came o , in which choir members displayed both singing and acting proficiency. The choir also participated in the Buckeye Conference choir festival in the winter and in the May Festival late in the spring. The juniors of the choir sang at Baccalaureate and the seniors perfornKHl at commencement to tap the year's activities. Rotary Blazer Winners Achievements We live in a competitive societv. Someone is forever devising ways to test and measure and compare us. Different criteria for this judgment results in an expression of individual differences, and points out the impossibility of setting a standard for THE BEST. What is hoped bv the creators of the tests or other guidelines is that the top scores, or the people who meet most of the requirements will be among the best. The achievements on these pages indicate only a few areas in which Findlav High students have met the challenges of education with outstanding success. Putting the finishing touches on a cabinet you made yourself, playing a phrase of music so expressively that it almost makes you cry, transcribing your dictation in record time, capturing a spark of life with a brush, making a big sale to a hard-to-please customer, all are accomplishments that hold personal meaning but which are often overlooked in the concentration on academics. This year the Rotary Club expanded its awards program to recognize achievements in every department of the school. Not only the best mathematician was recognized, but also the finest business student. And who is to say that one is better than the other? The man who recognizes and fulfills his potential is the greatest achiever, and although we have examples based on a standard, we each must mold our accomplishments to our own standards and abilities.
