7£ THE YEARBOOK STAFF OF THE NINETY-THIRD GRA D UA TING CLA SS OF FINDLA Y HIGH SCHOOL FINDLAY, OHIO PRESENTS mmm m FOREWORD From a shadow of effortless barbarism a civilization emerged twenty-four hundred years ago which produced consequential changes in the fields of art, science, and government. It was during the Golden Age of Athens that the seeds of democracy were sown, that the value of man as an individual capable of thought was recognized, and that literature blossomed from its bud. The ideals which ancient Greece created are today influencing our lives. We strive to improve and to expand the institution of democracy through participation in student government; we seek the competition of athletic endeavor; and we learn about ourselves through study of the classics. When we graduate from Findlay High School, we have reached the first plateau in the perpetual struggle to realize those ideals. The 1965 TROJAN wishes to present the goals and accomplishments thus far achieved. Standing with my Trojan shield before me, I try to realize just who I am: Tears shed over a defeat, a victory, A flag at half-staff, commencement — Doubts concerning colleges, friends, My own abilities, my future — And the importance of Life and the world around me; I learned from my teachers not only facts, But also the realities of Life. Those sports events, chapels, and club meetings Will not be forgotten; Friendships, made strong by Trojan bonds Will last — beyond forever. I am used to being a Trojan, and am proud of it ; This year I chose a class ring to tell others That I am a Trojan ; For the Seniors who called me lowly one I gave a prom ; Education — how I rack my brain. Deciding upon a college. What do I want to do with my life? Life has more problems than last year ; It is not as carefree, but still it's fun ; I am restless and I wait for the time When they will no longer call me A jolly, jolly Junior. This Trojan way of life was new to me, Yet soon it was my way. While trying to adjust here, I could not help but learn about The swimming pool and the Senior's elevator — the hard way; I learned about the horrors of initiations, Trying to change my schedule to accommodate lunch, And the ritual I had to honor for every Senior I met. For the second time in his 25 years of teaching, Doc has been named Ohio's Biology Teacher of the Year. The Na- tional Association of Biology Teachers named Mr. Phillips for the honor after careful and extensive screen- ing of all applicants. The NABT awarded a certificate to Mr. Phillips and also to the school. Trojan Spotlights Dave Sorenson, unanimous choice for the first team, All- Buckeye Conference, averaged 18 points a game to be- come the second highest scorer in the Buckeye Confer- ence with a 270 point total. Returning letterman Tom Norris this year fired a 67 to set new school records and ended the season with the low average of 75. The Buckeye Confer- ence golf champion added yet another honor to his long list by winning the post season Mid-America golf Championship with a 50 foot putt. 102 104 I 4 r : In 1' gSg ' i M o Hfl Lrj OK Football Left to right: D. Under the skilled tute- lage of head mentor Hal Paul, the Trojans placed two Men on the ALL-State and All-Buckeye Con- ference teams. Even in the face of a mid-season los- ing streak, the men kept up their spirits and made a great comeback. This year's junior varsity squad, numbering 51 strong, comprised the largest team in the last five years. With coaches Jim Siewert and Bernie Pal- mateer, the junior Trojans boasted a 6 — 1 record for the season. The boys suffered their only loss at the hands of rival Lima Senior. Coach Siewert Coach Stozich Seniors Tombaugh Bell Price Cagers The FHS basketball season began with a new coach, an intried team, and an indeflatable spirit. As the season progressed, the varsity became an ex- perienced nucleus of five, headed by Coach John Stozich. The 7-12 record, although a considerable improvement over last year's performance was not indicative of the hustle and determination which the boys exhibited at all times. A foreign court jinx both- ered them throughout the year as they won only 2 of their 8 away games. On the home court the Trojan basketballers, sparked by the run and shoot tactics of co-captains Ken Bell and Derek Price, had re- sounding victories against Buckeye Conference rivals Fremont Ross and Marion Harding. Averaging 18 points a game, junior Dave Sorenson was a unani- mous choice for the first team all-Buckeye Confer- ence, as well as being the second highest scorer in the conference with 270 points. The junior varsity wound up their season with a successful 9-9 record. Midseason triumphs over Mar- rion and Lorain Admiral King were considered the highpoints of the year, according to J.V. coach Jim Siewert. 116 FHS OPPONENT Defiance (A) 46 58 Toledo DeVilbiss (H) 65 59 Lorain (A) 81 64 Elyria (H) 55 64 Springfield (H) 84 50 Sandusky (H) 53 57 Fremont (A) 55 57 Lorain Ad. Many- feverish hours have been spent by the copy and lay- out staffs to put together the pages of this annual. Contributing to a large degree to the beauty of the book was the art staff, headed by Janealla Hills, and the photography department, under the expert guid- ance of juniors Dave Monroe and Mark Schieber. Randy Railing in publicity and Anne Sabroske in activities have added signnficantly to the success of the book, while the nimble fingers of Pat Hamlin aond Jan Russell have struggled to fit large amounts of copy and many names into spaces much too small. The watchful eye of advisor Richard Schellin has to a great extent been the determining factor in the amount of work that was achieved in the short amount of time. Thank goodness it's all over!! The Tri-class play which in- volved the massive invasion of the United States by the Grand Duchy of Fenberg was directed by Miss Bette Blakslee, speech, English, and drama teacher LeAnn Clark as Duchess Glor- iana and Alan Leis as Tully Bascomb headed the cast. 162 QUEEN Nina Peterraan KING Dick Hartman VALENTINE BALL On the evening of February 13, the patron saint of romance descended on Findlay High at the annual St. Valentine's Ball, sponsored by the Student Council. Seniors Dick Hartman and Nina Peterman reigned as king and queen for the event while couples danced to the music of the Stardusters. 163 CITIZENSHIP DA Y Each year one day is set aside to honor Findlay High's outstanding citizens, highlighted by the pres- ence of a noted speaker. This year's speaker was Dr. Nicholas Nyaradi, who is director of interna- tional studies at Bradley University. Dr. Nyaradi contrasted war-torn Hungary during the Hungarian Revolution to life in the United States. To the Amer- ican youth, he suggested that by maintaining a posi- tive attitude toward his country and being ready for sacrifices, Americans can combat and preserve peace. Those honored for outstanding citizenship were seniors Lisa Ede and John Grauel, juniors Julie Bish and Steve Lanning, and sophomores Becky Topper and Bill Goodman. 164 SILHOUETTES g gB2 i V == • i - i J J . For our Student Council, the hectic three-day meeting climaxed two years of planning and preparation. Many over- time hours were expended by convention workers and by the Student Council advisers, Mrs. Russell and Mr. Miller in soliciting the necessary housing for the 500 delegates. With the whole-hearted sup- port of the student body, Findlay High hosted the best convention ever. Pictured at left are Walter Borton, Mary Lou Swope, and Bob Conway. • ■-- , jv- -;,u...; i i m - W 4% Assemblies The social event of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom, was celebrated on May 28, in an aura of cotton bales and steamboats as the theme of Blues Along the Mississippi transformed the gym into a lazy river town. Accenting the blues of this final tribute to seniors was the music of the Tony Celeste Orchestra. The rugged pace of the post-prom party sponsored by local service clubs, included early morning visits to the bowling lanes, golfing range and skating rink. A sunrise breakfast at Camp Berry completed the evening's activities. The following Sunday, at the annual bac- calaureate services, the Reverend Thomas R. Ashton of the Trinity Episcopal Church delivered his address on The Time is Now. 172 COMMENCEMENT After four years of background preparation and two dress rehearsals, the principals of this play, Commencement 1965, gave an emotion packed performance. The four speakers Lisa Ede, Jean Schober, Charles Clapper, and John Grauel stole the show with their soliloquies on ' Integrity, ' At- titudes, Training, and Individualism, but everyone agreed that the real stars of the June 11th presentation were the 532 members of the graduating class. As the final strains of Pomp and Circumstance faded away, and the last di- ploma was accepted with a flourish; the curtain descended on the ninety-third graduation cere- monies.
