SPACE AGE FOUNDATIONS presented by THE TROJAN of 1961 foreword Man must understand the world about him because he meets it face to face. Man must conquer space simply because it is there. For such achieve- ment man needs a wealth of training and experience that has been developed over a foundation of strong and sturdy building blocks that create the very framework of our existence. Looking toward the space age, students need these sturdy foundations more than ever. Whether it is subject matter or personal integrity, persever- ance or mental alertness, training skills or faith in God and man — each is a stepping stone for the student's framework of life. To the graduates, we of the 1961 Trojan staff express the hope that each one has used solid building blocks to develop a lasting framework for the experiences that lie ahead. These are the building years. Man busy with space development, students occupied with the acquisition of knowledge and skills, architects, engineers, and administrators eagerly engaged in the construction of a new building — a new assembly of building blocks for the new age. With these basic facilities man must courageously face the space age because it is there.  ak.- TABLE OF CONTENTS Title page - ---- Foreword - 2 Highlights - 3 Extra-Curricular - ' 5 Scholarship teams - ' Acknowledgments -- - 39 Sports — 41 Fine Arts - - - 57 Faculty - - - - 69 Faculty Index - - °0 Seniors - ° ' Senior Personalities — ....1 06 Senior Activity Index - ' '0 Underclassmen — '21 Juniors - ' Sophomores '27 Triumphs - - ' -'-' Advertisements ' - ' Patrons - ] 38 General Student Index '57 homecoming Queen Kathy Brewer, elected by the student body, reigned over homecoming ceremonies at Donnell stadium and at the homecoming ball in the gym. It has become a rare thing in high schools to find a truly fine orchestra. In this respect, Findlay High School is not lacking, for among its many fine musical organizations is found a talented and versatile orchestra. The mid-winter and spring concerts are a feature of the orchestra's busy schedule which also included duty as a pit orchestra in the annual operetta. The orchestra is directed by Mr. Oliver Schumacher who is retiring this year after 21 years in the Findlay school system. Zellers 132 _, triumphs Recognizing the need to provide lasting recognition for those Findlay High School students who have earned outstanding honors this school year, the editors of the 1961 Trojan have in- augurated this Triumphs section to fill that need. Senior Duane Smith was named a finalist in the 1960-61 National Merit Scholarship program and re- ceived a Certificate of Merit in recognition of this honor. An outstanding student throughout his high school career, Duane's persistently high grade average aided him in the attainment of this notable scholastic achievement. Chuck Collins, recognized as the most valuable de- fensive lineman on the Trojan football team, received another honor when he was appointed to the All- Buckeye Conference Football Team. A senior, Chuck has made a distinguished athletic record during his three years on the varsity. From this year's football squad senior Paul Oren has been named to the second All-Buckeye Confer- ence team. Further recognition of this valuable back was given when he was awarded honorable mention at state level. Bob Burkmier, a senior in the vocational department of Findlay Senior High has presided over the Vocational Industrial Clubs of Ohio during the past year. Bob was elected president of the state organization at its fall conference held at Ohio State University. 134 A musically gifted senior, Martha Treir, was chosen to perform as a member of the All-State Orchestra when it presented its annual concert in Columbus at the Music Education Convention in April. She is one of the ninety students and one of the two clarinet players chosen to play in the or- chestra. Findlay High School will receive a foreign exchange student in the fall of 1961 largely because of the joint efforts of John Burson, John Morgan, and Ron Holden. These Key Club members were the instigators of the pro- ject and have donated a considerable amount of their time to making the program a success. Junior Achiever Dee Thauborn placed first in the Junior Achievement Toledo Area sales contest. She was selected on the basis of her ability to sell her product. In the state regional contest Dee demonstrated her sales techniques before the Tole- do Sales Executive Club where she won third place. 135 Connie Cole, Senior Tri- Hi-Y member, and Mary Shelley, of the Junior Tri-Hi- Y, were honored at the an- nual Youth-in-Government program in Columbus by their election to the offices of Clerk of the House and Chaplain of the House, re- spectively. Their appoint- ments to these positions were the results of much ef- fort and active participation in Tri-Hi-Y. Marty Hartman, named Most Valuable Player on the Trojan basketball squad, re- ceived further recognition for his outstanding athletic prowess when he was ap- pointed to the second team, All Buckeye Conference. This honor was one of the high spots in the busy jun- ior's notable athletic career. Senior Mike Mitchell was elected treasurer of the Ohio Association of Distribution f JW Education Clubs at the an- KograpmV. j jjft ' Vm nual state leadership con- i M ference held in Columbus in T H March. This active DECA ■member was then entitled to H attend the National Leader- v l ship Conference in Chicago 1 as a voting delegate. f r --. -M ► -!-- iZa L. oif pairtPMts Anonymous Anast Pharmacy Powell Radio Television Davis Electric Delaney Trailer Sales The Photo Center Cassman Hardware Store Kennedy Printing Company South Side Marathon Station Sherwin Williams Paints The Dobeckmun Company Kathleen Concannon Dance Studio Capital Tire Shop Alice Beauty Dress Shop Black Warner's Clothing Store Egbert's Home Furnishings Porter's Music Store Colonial Nut Sweet Shoppe Champion Shoe Rebuilders Sears Roebuck Company Niswander Jewelers Dr. D. PALACE BARBERSHOP 1 1 8 West Crawford CA 2-9040 SUPERIOR CLEANERS fURRIERS Lima and South Main Findlay, Ohio 149 In the 1860's, crude oil was refined simply by dis- tilling it — just to get kerosene for the coal-oil lamps of the day. Everything else was thrown away as worthless. Modern refining extracts miracles from crude Since crude oil was first harnessed by man. the art and science of refining it has taken giant steps ahead. Today, virtually every ounce of useful- ness is wrung from this precious raw ma- terial. And nowhere is it achieved with greater skill and under more ideal condi- tions than at Ohio Oil Company's modern Robinson (Illinois) Refinery. Here, distillation first separates the crude into components. Then, through such processes as thermal and catalytic cracking, reforming, polymerization, cok- ing and alkylation, the very molecules of these substances are altered and rejoined in wondrous ways to create new products. These include Ohio Oil's superior Marathon SUPER-M® and MILE-maker® gasolines, a variety of fine burner fuels, kerosene and diesel fuel. They utilize over 90 per cent of the original crude oil. Much of the remainder is petroleum coke, a pure form of carbon valuable in refining aluminum. The small volume of gases not used in products is used as fuel in the plant. Such efficiency typifies Ohio Oil Com- pany operations — and is a dramatic ex- ample of the kind of industrial progress made possible by our American system of free enterprise.
