Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1960 volume:

THE 1960 TROJAN presents WINDOWS TO THE FUTURE Published by the eighty-eighth graduating class of Findlay Senior High School Findlay, Ohio FOREWORD Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom. School days have opened our windows to the future — they have taught us the value of combining wisdom gained therein with the experience of choosing unknown paths ahead. Yes, the paths to the future may be long and rough; but we, as students, have been preparing ourselves to confront these challenges and to choose which one we wish to pursue. As we peer through the windows, we visualize the future. As we pass through the doors, we are striding to meet it face to face. From our days of dreaming through windows we now go forth not only with a natural anxiety but also with a courageous heart. Once having decided clearly and definitely on the paths that lie ahead, we must strive to bring our dreams to reality and sacrifice those things which will help to create the fulfillment of our hopes. The 1960 Trojan staff wishes to imbue especially in the mind of each graduate the importance of opening those windows to the future and of bringing a measure of success to each hope and ambition. May Findlay Senior High always remember, For they can conquer who believe they can. Faith in one's self is the force of life. After twenty years of inactivity, the Varsity F club was revitalized this year largely through the efforts of football coach Neil Schmidt. The purpose of this organi- zation is to create more unity and friendship among lettermen, to create deeper interest in athletics, and to develop every possible aid for our school's athletic pro- gram. To qualify for membership each applicant must have received a player or manager letter in any varsity sport. High points of this year's activities were various sports films, attendance at Ohio-Illinois football games and the Detroit Pistons- Minneapolis basketball game. 120 VARSITY FOOTBALL RECORD Findlay. The Trojans, under head mentor, Neil Schmidt, started their 5-4 season with a thrilling 20-14 victory over Toledo Scott. Following their fourth straight victory, the Trojans were ranked tenth in the state. The remainder of the Conference games found the Trojans providing rugged competition, but not enough to overcome their opposi- tion. The climax of the season was a 26-2 victory over our rivals, the Fostoria Redmen, when eleven seniors played their last game. The formula for a winning season wasn't size this year, but speed, aggressiveness, team spirit, and the desire to win. The 1959-60 Trojans, while lacking in height, made up the difference in determina- tion. There was never a night on the floor that the team did not have victory foremost in their minds. Each member was an outstanding player; and teaming with the other members, he gave anybody a good game. It was this unity that helped the team establish its remarkable record of beating every other team in the tough Buckeye Conference at least once in their two conflicts. Mr. Werley, Mr. Howe, and many fans agree hustle was the means that won many games for the mighty Trojans. JUNIOR VARSITY SECOND ROW: S. Renninger, C. Reimund, J. Phelps, J. Bogart, J. Poff, R. Kalz. Bigelow. J. Adams, T. Rannells, S. Loach, D. Maurer, D. Briggs, C. Collins, The accomplishments of the 1960 Trojans were numerous and outstanding. They went undefeated in their dual meets and made excellent showing at Marion night relays, Buckeye Conference, and the Northwest District competition. The individual effort of each boy is demonstrated by the fact that twelve boys earned a varsity letter based on a certain number of points. Four new records, the largest number ever established in one year, were posted by Jack Adams, 880 yd. run; Paul Oren, broad- jump; Charles Collins, discus; and Tom Rannells, shot put. The Findlay High School swimming team, coached by Jim Repp, experienced the best season in its three year history. Every school record and several pool records were broken. The coach and team mates are going to miss such senior standouts as Leslie Miller, captain Jim Miller, and Mike Whitacre, who was voted the most valuable swimmer. BASEBALL TEAM THIRD ROW: J. FIRST ROW: M. Salazar, J. Gaertner, W. Crow, D. Metzger, S. Remminger, T. DePuy, T. Williams. After losing many of last year's squad members, coach Dick Shelley's big job was rebuilding. What the 1960 Trojans lacked in experience they made up in hustle. Wins over Lima Senior, Fremont, Sylvania, Wapakoneta, and Lima Shawnee highlighted the season for the spirited F.H.S. Batsmen. 132 TENNIS TEAM STANDING: Mr. Howe, J. VanFleet, J. Wilson, J. Fredricks, D. Bonnell, G. Peterman, L. Yoxthimer. KNEELING: J. Bachelder, R. Traul, D. Gray, R. Sandel, J. Poff. The Findlay High School netmen, tutored by Coach Jim Howe, smashed their way to another in a long series of victorious campaigns. Successful conquest of such tennis powers as Ottawa Hills was a feat of the season. Fine showings in district competition and in the Buckeye Conference were highlights of the season's play. GOLF TEAM STANDING: J. Noreager, M. Miller, L. Wittenmyer, F. Freece, J. Kelley, J. Laurent, M. Lanning, B. Maurer, M. Romer, Mr. Bachman. KNEELING: M. Mears, B. Payne, D. Decker, J. Bushong, J. Sanderson, R. Klausing. On the winning side the 1960 golf team cannot boast of too many victories. With new and inexperienced players their job mainly was to rebuild and trim for keen competition. The team says Watch us next year! 133 INTRAMURALS GAA BASKETBALL CHAMPS SECOND ROW: S. Rhea, L. Miller, M. Walters, L. Reimund. FIRST ROW: T. Trostmiller, K. Brewer, M. Cole, P. Shrider. Everything else was thrown away as worthless ' Modern refining extracts miracles from crude' Since crude oil was first harnessed by man. the art and science of refining it has taken giant steps ahead. Today, virtually every ounce of useful- ness is wrung from this precious raw ma- terial. And nowhere is it achieved with greater skill and under more ideal condi- tions than at Ohio Oil Company's modern Robinson (Illinois I Refinery. Here, distillation first separates the crude into components. Then, through such processes as thermal and catalvtic cracking, reforming, polymerization, cok- ing and alkylation. the very molecules of these substances are altered and rejoined in wondrous ways to create new products. These include Ohio Oil's superior Marathon SUPER-MS and MILE-maker« gasolines, a variety of fine burner fuels, kerosene and diesel fuel. They utilize over 90 per cent of the original crude oil. Much of the remainder is petroleum coke, a pure form of carbon valuable in refining aluminum. The small volume of gases not used in products is used as fuel in the plant. Such efficiency typifies Ohio Oil Com- pany operations — and is a dramatic ex- ample of the kind of industrial progress made possible by our American svstem of free enterprise.
