H51 TROJAN OF PROMISE Published by the eighty-seventh graduating class of Findlay Senior High School Findlay, Ohio I OKEWORD Just a century ago, the Drake well opened an era of sparkling development. With a giant surge of majestic power, its liquid black fingers have shot restlessly skyward — as if searching for the very infinite realms of the universe. The well is capped and the power is directed, so that it might be of the greatest possible service to mankind. The oil industry has indeed established Findlay as a well cultured, pleqsant, and friendly town — one whose people are intent in their desire for progress in every field, especially that of education. They realize that each student is comparable to an oil well. In his childhood, his mind drives its shaft deep into the ground. The basic structure is completed, and the mind is ready for its ultimate operation. The strike is made! The vast potential of the mind becomes an active gusher — hesitating at first, unsure of its strength. It must then be capped to guide it toward the advancement of humanity. The 1959 staff of the Trojan hopes, in some small way, to impress upon you graduates especially, this import- ant relationship between the continual progress offered by oil industries, and the unceasing opportunities offered by the Wells of Promise. 5L TABLE OF CONTENTS Distribution — Administration and Faculty 3 Refined Products — Seniors 1 3 Raw Materials — Underclass 49 B y-Gone Days — Highlights ' 63 Production — Music, Art, Drama 75 Drilling — Sports 89 By-Products — Clubs and Organizations 103 Shareholders — Advertising 133 Index 154 ADMINISTRATION DR. KLEINER, Director of Admissions Co-Educational Church Related Liberal Arts 152 A great industry was born 100 years ago In 1859. Colonel Edwin Drake drilled 69y2 feet into the earth and struck oil. His discovery gave America a big, new source of petroleum for kerosene lamplight — and launched a century of industrial achievement.  ? £ £ ' — - ,ll; ■ ■■■ JCJS i . .. ia£ £ -- ■■ Now a new century of progress begins Since Colonel Drake first tapped the rich, subterranean oil resources of America, the search for this remarkable raw material has gone on and on. The Ohio Oil Company has been, and is, in the forefront of the search. We now own or lease millions of acres of oil and gas producing land. Our explorations for oil range over the U. S., Canada, Africa, Central and South America. No quest could be more justified. For oil is among the most versatile of substances. It propels our cars, planes, trains and ships . . . helps our factories and farmers produce more goods . . . provides essential ingredients for roofing, furniture polish, plastics, detergents, synthetic rubber, and countless other things we use. Oil is a vital factor in our economy. It contributes to an ever-improving standard of living for all of us. The Ohio Oil Com- pany is proud to be part of the oil indus- try. We are confident that this 100-year- old infant ' is just beginning to grow.
