T0 0RLD PE CE ls world peace only a shimmering mirage doomed always to disappear before the ap- proach of reality? Nations of the world and their peoples seem in almost complete agreement that peace is desirable. Still there are some people and perhaps the ruling forces of some nations continuing to worship greed, perpetuate inter- national rivalry, thirst for wanton power. Nations must work together to attain world peace. The brief experience of the world under the leadership of the United Nations certainly represents a step in the right direc- tion. Nations must remember that if such an inter- national organization can accomplish even a semblance of peace on earth, they must be ready to delegate more and more power to its efforts as the years roll by. The guiding principle should be: Any organization which can use a power more effectively for the good of mankind should have that power. One of the greatest roadblocks on the path- way to lasting peace is the precept that each nation has the right to control its own affairs as it sees fit. Each nation adopting this policy must grant the same right to other nations. Too often these ultra-nationalistic courses lead certainly to war. It should be remembered that national sovereignty is something to be used-not hoarded. The U. N., however, is not the basis of cr peaceful world. How can nations live peace- fully when there is trouble at home? Indi- viduals must learn to live peacefully with their neighbors. Only by starting at the source can neighbors, communities, states and finally nations learn to live in peace. Peace on earth , yes, but we should never forget that qualifying phrase- among men of good will. Each generation must add its contribution to world peace. Pessimists will say the goal can never be accomplished. But one thing is positive-the only way to attain a goal is to strive for it. It will not be attained soon. It may take 10 years or 50 years or a century. Youth always has been willing to accept a challenge. In this atomic age there is no other way to turn. We must choose between peace or the destruction of civilization. Each generation must carry the lamp of peace a little bit farther, a little bit higher. Because we, the class of 1954 of Findlay Senior High School, believe this is the most important goal toward which we can strive, we dedicate this annual to world peace. edimfivu
