Softballn ,,,,,,, ,,l-Z-3 -4 Glee Club 1-Z-3-4 Cheer1eader,,,,,, Z-3-4 Plays Z-3-3-4 Senior History On one fine September day in 1940 the Spaceship of '5Z stopped at Finchford and picked up Dale Ackerman, Delbert Ackerman, Jack Decker, Ethelyn Howard, Frances Hurn, Roger Masters, Shirley Michael, Njancy Nielson, Kennth Russell, Elda Sandholdt, Erwin Sherburne, Leon Smelser, LaVern Thurm, Orlow Webrand, Jr,, Robert Whiteside, Wendell Whiteside, Virginia Todd, Betty Myszka, Weston Thomas, and Marian Turner, Our pilot was Eileen Parker, During the second year our spaceship lightened somewhat, We lost eight and gained three, Arlene Baldwin, Leonard Bernends, Richard Schwab, making our total fifteen, Our pilot for the second flight was Miss Luse, We started our third year with the same total as we had the year before, but lost Delbert Ackerman, Jack Decker, Elda Sandholdt, Weston Thomas, Joining us was Arnold Henn, Virginia Henn, Neal Sells, Beverly Booher, Our pilot for the next two years was Miss Helen Loots, During our fourth lap we lost Richard Schwab, Erwin Sherburne, LaVern Thurm, Orlow Webrand, Jr, and Neal Sells, 'We did not pick up anyone, making our total ten, In our fifth year Alsie Brown took over the pilot job, We stopped long enough to pick up Cae Cuvelier, and Henry Miller, 'Beverly Booher, Arnold Henri and Virginia Henn, were not with us at the beginning of this year, Our total was nine, As we progressed along we finally came to our last lap in grade school, Our class now consists of ten, gaining Clair Bohan, Lloyd Phillips at the end of this year, Our teacher was Mr, Tuckerfand feature of the year was the boys' ability of getting sent out in the hall, We looked forward to our Freshxnan year with the idea of only having four subjects, We were a little scared at the thought of initiation, Our spaceship rested long enough to pick up Lois Strickland, Our class consisted of eight, We had a head pilot for our next three years, Harry Haven, Our co-pilots for this year were Bruce Tucker, June Danton, and John Dulin, During our tenth year Mrs, Nielson and Mr. Paul joined us as co-pilots, leaving off June Danton and Mr, Tucker, We gained Clair Bohanhand Junior Webrand, We stopped through the year of learning for our Junior class play, Our Gal Sal and our Junior-Senior Banquet, Joining us for our next two years was Mrs, Ridenour, Mrs, Lorenzenand Mr, Miller were co-pilots this year also, At long last we have reached the end of our trip in our Spaceship of '52 , We have nine in our class and they are as follows: Clair Bohan, Cae Cuvelier, Richard Folkers, Orlow Webrand, Jr,, Lois Strickland, Frances Hurn, Etheyln Howard, Shirley Michael, and Betty Myszka, Shirley, Frances, Ethelyn, and Betty were the only ones to start and complete this long journey in Finchford of the Class of '5Z , Mr, Staebell and Mrs, Irwin took over the duties of Mrs, Lorenzen and Mr, Miller, Our highlights were that eight of the nine Seniors were on the first team in basketball for the last two years, We are- looking forward to our class play Warning Wings and our Junior-Senior Banquet, As we close this year we wish to thank all our pilots for helping us along the way and for doing their best to start us on our way to success, x Last Will and Testament of The Class of '52 We, the Senior Class of 1952. of the Finchford High School, County of Black Hawk, State of Iowa, being of supposedly sound minds, superior intel- ligence, sound judgrnent, and pleasing disposition, hereby published and declare this our last will and testament, Lois Strickland wills her aspirins to Shirley Porath because it seems that Shirley can't afford them, Cae Cuvelier wills her pivot position to any girl who can remember the plays as well as Cae did, Ethelyn Howard wills her shooting ability to Lyn Cuvelier providing she makes more than twenty points per game, Frances Hum wills leadership ability to Jo Ann Saathoff who seems so quiet, Betty Myszka wills her guarding ability to Delores Gerholdt providing she doesn't fall down all the tirne, Shirley Michael wills the hard work on the annual to Sherry Sue because we know she likes to work so well, Dick Folkers wills his height to Jim Finger providing he plays pivot and does as good a job as Dick did. Orlow wills his mixture of perfumes to Mr. Staebell providing he can use it and still keep his friends. Clair Bohan wills his driving ability to anyone who is willing to take it, As a class, we will our ability to stick up for one another through thick and thin to all the classes, In witness wereof, we have subscribed our names and affixed our seal this twentieth day of May in the year of one thousand nine hundred and fifty- two. 4 Senior Class Prophecy In the year of 1967-- . Miss Betty Myszka is now married and has twins, These bright-eyed youngsters, though only five years old, show much interest in music, recitation, and sports much to the delight of their mother, who gave up her business career to marry an-up-and coming young attorney, If you see an Admiral in the Navy walking down the street, his chest full of ribbons and medals, that man might well be Admiral Orlow Webrand, He joined the Navy after his graduation and has been in everywpart of the world since then, He received many ribbons and citation for his courageous work back in 1954, before the end of the Korean War, Mr, Dick Folkers, now known as Professor Folkers is an engineering professor in one of the largest Universities in the United States, He and his wife, fan old high school sweetheartj try to lead a quiet life, but ever since Professor Joseph Staebell, the head of the construction of the new rocket tothe moon, has consulted him about an engineering problem they have been in the public eye, Miss Cae Cuvelier worked for the F,B,I, for awhile after her graduation, She and a fellow worker, acting as under-cover agents, tracked down the top Boss of the dope racket in the United States, After the arrest of several hundred smaller dope peddlers, Cae married her fellow worker and they settled down to lead a quiet life, Mr, Clair Bohan, a well-known raiser of Championship Belgians has just come away from the National Belgian show with the highest awards ever re- ceived, He attributes his great success to the start he received when he lived on a farm Northwest 'of Finchford, Iowa, During his high school career he spent his summers helping his father show Belgians, Miss Lois Strickland has recently won fame as a dress designer, Her latest creation is an exquisite, strapless, backless white gown made of the latest spun-glass material, This new gown called Cynthia is the rage of Paris, Diane Jean Drew, has just made her premiere in the Metropolitan Opera, The critics acclaim her as the greatest discovery since, She has come a long way since her first appearances as soloist for the Finchford High School Mixed Chorus, where she was known as Miss Shirley Jean Michael, Many people around Finchford remember the little redhead called Tootie , as the little gal who loved to ride her brother's motorcycle, Miss Ethelyn Howard is now a very successful motorcycle stunt rider, Twirling Tootie as she is called, is the star of the largest troupe ever to tour the world Dean of the largest women's university of the nation is Miss Frances L, , She got her start by receiving a scholarship through the Farm Bureau, Her aim is to give everyone the opportunity she had, that is receive a scholar- ship of some kind, 1 N 1 . . a 2 i I , N N I 1 1 li Junior Jugheadsv The school year started out with five bright eyed Juniors, who were as follows: Jim Webrand-the guy that's always getting himself in trouble, Richard Schwab-who will always go along with the gang for a good joke-on somebody else, Joe Jones-the charming lad that can always be found by the girls, Shirley Porath-the gal that can always take her share of teasing-and dish it right back, Norma Jean Bohlen-a girl that would rather win than lose, and Sherry Sue Winkey-who likes to do humorous readings, and have fun just as well as the next one, The first of March brought a new member to our class, she is Mattie Christians from Shell Rock-and a very likeable young Missf We elected as class officers, Richard Schwab-President, Sherry Sue Winkey- Vice-President, and Norma Jean Bohlen-Secretary and Treasurer, As Juniors we felt the need for extra money, Our first project was a paper drive which netted S12,00, Our magazine campaign brought in S lZ7,31, Whittlin ', the class play, added a record 55105.00 to the treasury and starred Jim Webrand as Doc Yak whose whittling seemed to solve problems for young and old, The play was scheduled to be put on November 14-th, and we had four weeks in which to get our parts, Our class and director chose Whittlin ' as our play, and it had eight characters in it, so the class chose Walter Cuvelier and Juel Strickland as the two additional persons in the play, All in all the play came off very successf fully, in fact, it was a record for S105,00 was taken in, Mrs, Irwin was the director and the class presented her with a sterlinghsilver spoon to add to her silver service, NORMA BOHLEN JOE JONES SHIRLEY PORATH IC N669 'Y 9 'Via e-0 SCI? I We Sophomores have had a very en- joyable year and have had many exciting and interesting parties and class meeti.ngs, At the beginning of the year we found that Mrs, Irwin was to be our class spon- sor, We then had a class meeting and de- cided that we would have a class meeting every other Friday and a party at least once every six weeks, We also elected our class officers that are as follows: P1'eSide1'1t ----------- Ivan Johnson Vice-President ----- .Tuel Strickland Secretary-Treasurer ------- Eldon Johnson Our studies have also been very interesting, For instance, in Gen- eral Science we have studied water and water pumps, While studying this unit we took some very inter- esting field trips, We went to the water plant, the sewage disposal plant, and the Viking Punmp Company,,all in Cedar Falls, We also made some in- te resting experirnents, We read in our book that there was moisture in every- thing, so we heated some rocks and soil Sophomore Walt Cuvelier Delores Gerholdf Nedra Heise Lon Cuvelier Norma Murray Darren Schwab Joe Melichlr J'oAnn Saathoff to prove that statement, There proved to be moisture on the top of the can, We also distilled some water and all of us had a tastef Some of the other units we have studied are Air, Astronomy , and Conservation , ln English we have studied simple sentences, puncuating of sentences, and compound and complex sentences, Some- times the learning wasn't too easy for us, but Mis, Irwin has 'tried to explain it to us Simply, As the Sophomore class is a little large, we have to be split up for Typing II class and the rest of us are in a class of our own, Most of us seem to be getting along pretty good for first year typistsf We had a farewell party for Ivan Johnson, It was held at the school, We played cootie and had a short basketball game, We all enjoyed popcorn and pop after our games, The class presented Ivan with a flashlight, His going leaves us with an enrollment of thirteen, Softies Anita Renning Juel Strickland Erwin Sherburne LYH CUVCUCI' Eldon Johnson Veda Young Q i i - , ., 1, Q., . ,:. ., . -,, :gg V3 Y- 'Q ' . I u 1 i w N I 1 1 w The Green Freshmen WAYNE BASS JANICE MOORE BOB ROSOL w I PHYLLIS WEBRAND FREDA YOUNG At the beginning ofthe year the large class of two set out to brave the Fresh- man year, They were Janice Moore and Wayne Bass, About two weeks later, Bob Rosol joined us to be followed in a few days by Phyllis Webrand, 'In the second six weeks we gained Sharon Toepfer, Our lastest new member- is Freda Young, We elected officers at the beginning of the year, They are as follows: Pres- ident--Wayne Bass, Vice-President--Janice Moore, Secretary--Phyllis Webrand, and Treasurer--Bob Rosol, The day which the Freshmen, and everyone looked forward to was the well known Freshman initiation, The Seniors, really had us decked out in an unusual array, Janice Moore portrayed Ma Kettle, and of course Ma Kettle must have a husband to chase around, so you might be able to guess who Wayne Bass was, Phyllis Webrand was Brat and Bob Rosol was Emmy, This was a day which no one could forget, At the beginning of the second semester we re-elected oificers, They were: President--Freda Young, Vice-President--Sharon Toepfer, Secretary--Janice Moore, Treasurer--Wayne Bass, Sergeant at Arms--Bob Rosol, and assistant Sergeant at Arms--Phyllis Webrand, As you can see, each member in our class received an office, although we really had to think to make it come out even, At the beginning of the year in Home Economics, we learned some of the funda- mentals of sewing, The second semester led us to the fundamentals of cooking and starting laboratory work in the kitchen, All of these things that we learn, will some- day be of great value to us, The boys, in Shop have been enjoying the projects they have made, Some of the things that have kept them occupied are lamps, nick-nac shelves and many other things, Nix eww Seventh Grade X A I he is S ex i 'R t i 3 , .4 i ' ff ,S 5 sill..-awisnif ,i fl Q Vs EJ' if 4 Eighth Grade Not Pictured! Betty Brandos Mary Cook who has moved away, James Fingers Rosemarie Melichar Patsy Bass Judy Benton Carlene Fox Edward Haven Jimmy Jacobsen Betty Lou Mathes Tommy Melichar Delores Myszka Donna Schurman Johnny Sherburne Shirley Y oung Bette Dixon She rley Fox Shirley Hundley Forrest Jones Marvin Lindaman Donna Kay Nlnthes Lois Menzel Carolyn Miller Nancy Page Charles Parker Gary Schzitzbe rg Larry Schwab Helen Smith Ellen Soldwisch David Strickland David Bolton I 1 J I 4 4 Seventh and Eighth Highlights We started the year with ten pupils in the eighth grade class, As the year progressed we had two more new pupils, Shirley Young and James Finger, The class officers are: President--Tommy Melichar, Vice-President--Betty Mathes, Secretary--Judy Benton, Treasurer--Donna Schurman, Mr, Haven is our sponsor, We have studied about many countries in Geography such as: the United States, Hawaii, Alaska, Turkey, Iran, Arabia and South America, Studying from the World News of the Week Map we have gained much knowledge of the happening of the rest of the world, Community problems, taxes, areas and other problems have been put before us in our Math class. Speed drills were the most fun, Health was replaced by Civics the last semester, In English class, we dealt with nouns, verbs, adjectives, and letter writing, We also had work from the Readers Digest and eighth grade reading books. The Home Economics class had units on curtains and window treatments, serving and types of service, basic instructions on sewing techniques, food and nutrition, and grooming, The boys in shop learned about tools and put the equipment in order with the proper repairs, A few projects are as follows: end table, lamps, lawn patterns, bookcase, gunrack, gun case, marionettes and other small projects, The seventh grade class was organized the second week of school, with Mr, Haven as our sponsor, We elected officers, which are as follows: President- Forest Jones, Vice-President--Ellen Soldwisch, Secretary-Treasurer--Carolyn Miller, The new officers for the second semester were: President--Larry Schwab, Vice-President--Donna Kay Mathes, Secretary--Lois Menzel, Treas- urer--Rosemarie Melichar, In English, The Seventh Slickers , were organized, We have a program every Friday, The programs have varied from a radio program Ka quiz show asking about Englishj to working with marionettes, The marionettes were made in Industrial Arts class by the seventh and eighth grade boys and completed them with papier-mache heads and hair, The eighth grade girls presented The Prince and the Pea , The Frog Prince , was presented by the seventh grade girls, Mrs, Irwin helped design and make the costumes, We have lost three members who are: Nancy Page, Forrest Jones and Mary Cook, Civics class has been very interesting, I think all of us like the debates, where we have three boys and three girls, and let them tear some topic question to pieces. We sure get some surprising answers, Our Social Studies took us over the United States, Latin America and many other lands, Group discussions have been enjoyed by all, We have quizes too, and if we miss the question, everyone knows that there will be a penalty of some kind awaiting them, The Home Ec, girls decided that they would like to cook for one whole afternoon, and that is just what they did, Some of the different things on the list to be made were cakes, doughnuts, taffy, caramel popcorn, muffins, ice cream and sherbets, It was all a lot of fun, Last but not least we mustn't forget the grand ti.mes we have had at all of our parties, All in all we think school has been very enjoyable this year, I 1 I 1 i J i V 6th Grade FRONT ROW: L1-ft to Right: J, Strauser, D, Stevenson, J, Cuvclier, B. The sixth grade began the school year with eighteen members, By Christmas three more students had joined our group, Early in the year we organized a Citizenship Club, As members we pledge ourselves to do our best to improve the standards of our homes, our school, and our community, thereby promoting better citizenship, We spent considerable tirne reviewing fundamentals in arithmetic, particularly, multiplication and division, We have also studied fractions and decimals, learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide them, Working for accuracy has been our special goal, In language we have had our first taste of grammar by learning the parts of speech and kinds of and parts of sentences, We have learned to use a dictionary and encyclopedia with ease and speed, Our geography has consisted of studying Europe and all countries controlled by Europe, We have become quite skillful map readers, Health class has taught us what we should eat and what our body does with food, Our reading class work has been different this year, We have done a great deal of work with phonics, phonetics, syllabication and general word study, We have read silently for comprehension rather than orally, At the end of the first semester eve ryone's reading had improved, some making as much as eighteen months gain Last, but not least, comes art, We have learned to do much free work this year, We made several large murals and-friezes, It has been a good year and we have enjoyed being together as one class again, We have learned many lessons in everyday living and character building alongwith our regular lessons, We won't forget sixth grade for it has been a happyone, I 4 I 1 I 4 I 4th and Sth Grades FRONT ROW, Left to Right: E, Renning, J, Johnson, D, Gerholdt, M Dillcnger, B, Becker, J, Bolton, Miss Becker, teacher, SECOND ROW: l.. Walters, Twenty-one boys and girls enrolled in the half of fourth and fifth grade room August 25, 1951, First innportant happening of the year occurred August 27, when Jerry Johnson broke his arm while playing in the swings, The next day Judith Bolton returned from a trip and entered the fourth grade, During the first semester Arnold Burns and Edith Salfter joined the fifth grade, but both left during the year, Ronald Brandos moved here with his folks March 1, In the fourth grade Shirley Heinz and Howard Cook entered, but Howard moved in March, The fifth graders were sorry to lose two of their members who have been with them since their first school days, There were Patty Johnson and Donald Page, Patty moved to Waverly and Donald moved to New Mexico. Several members of our room had leading parts in the Christmas operetta, They were Edna Mae Renning, Paul Miller, Gordon Walters, Janice Hites, Bonnie Becker, Donald Page, Richard Hundley and Gary Irwin, We went to Cedar Falls on the first trip of the year, There we visited the city library where the librarian explained the advantages of a library, She also played us the record Pecos Bill which ,we all enjoyed, Then we visited the museum at Iowa State Teachers College, Before we went home we visited the greenhouse where the custodian, Mr, Wardin, told us about the topical plants which he has grown there successfully, Also, he showed us his pets which in- clude a racoon and alligator, 4 1 I 1 1 4 I 1 A i I 1 l 3rd and 4th Grades FRONT ROW: Left to Right: J, Bingham, 'l', Benton, J, Murray, N, Turner, D, Miller, B, Peterson, V. We have had many happy times together, The day we joined the third and fourth grades for a field trip to visit Baker'S Ice Cream Factory at Cedar Falls, and the Story Lady at the Iowa State Teacher's College will long be remembered, Our parties were lots of fun, On Halloween we all dressed in costumes and joined the other rooms in a parade in front of the high school, At Christmas tirne we each drew names for an exchange of gifts and Santa visited us and brought a nice treat, The Valentine party was exciting too and each of us went home loaded with Valentines from our friends, Didn't we have fun coasting down the hill this winter on our sleds? Re- meniber the tinie Ellen Porath and some of the others tried to move the trees that were in their way?
