Dedication Mrs. Ruth Bennett is someone who set many of us off to a good start at Fillmore. She herself is a native of this area, having attended Fillmore High School and Houghton College and eventually graduating from Fredonia with a Bachelor's degree. After she had com- pleted several years of employment elsewhere, we were fortunate enough to get her as a teacher at Fillmore, where she has remained for 26 years. During those years she has been active in school life, serving as the SPACE advisor for four years, advising the Sports Booster Club in the '60’s, and helping to manage many elementary programs, including Kinderfair. This teacher definitely enjoys her job, and is noted for her enthusiasm and creativity. Those of us who were in her class will always remember her constant support and her real interest in her small pupils. Her retirement this year will leave a gap that will be hard to fill. The CREST is pleas- ed to name Mrs. Bennett as a co-recipient of the 1986 yearbook dedication. 2 Dedication Mr. Richard Kennedy has also played an active part in making Fillmore the school that it is. He received his college and university education in West Virginia, and has also done some studying at St. Bonaventure and Buffalo State. He has earned an AB in Education and has a Master s degree in Music. During the 25 years that he has spent at Fillmore, he has done much to inspire and encourage his students in developing their musical abilities. He has taught vocal music and directed the Senior Choir, Orchestra. Handbells, Madrigal Singers, Junior Choir, and Girls’ Choir. He has conducted Elementary Chorus, Elementary Orchestra, and First Year Band as well as serving as Chairman of the Music Department and preparing students for many musical ac- tivities. Through it all, he has shown true dedication and love for his students. His valuable contributions to Fillmore will be greatly missed as he retires this year. It is with pride that we name Mr. Kennedy as the other co-recipient of the 1986 CREST dedication. 3 This Moment In Time Seniors...........................................................................................5 Underclassmen....................................................................................27 Activities.......................................................................................41 Elementary.......................................................................................49 Faculty-Staff....................................................................................65 Sports...........................................................................................79 Organizations...................................................................................101 Advertisements..................................................................................119 Acknowledgements................................................................................128 4 Example senior picture caption: NAME saying; activities or awards; favorite class; teacher; no. of baby picture. His stay in the United States was sponsored by the Institute for Cultural Exchange. While at Fillmore he played on the J.V. Soccer team, BB team and Boys Tennis team. Jorg has en- joyed living with his host families and doing things that he had never done before (like eating corn and peanut butter and riding a snowmobile). Jean Javaux (top pic., left) came to Fillmore from Belgium and was sponsored by the Rotary Club. He, too, played on the Tennis team and was also an All-Star for his great performance on the Varsity Soccer team. His travels in the U.S. were most memorable, and he especially enjoyed the people here. We will greatly miss Jean and Jorg and want to wish them the best as they return to their countries. 16 This Moment In Time Is A Time To Smile Senior Class Officers and Advisors. After a 3Vfe hour bus ride made shorter by chess games and music, the seniors finally ar- rived in Canada. Everybody exchanged American money for flashy, multi-colored Canadian bills. Jay, the driver, deftly steered the bus the rest of the way to Toronto and the Hampton Court Hotel. Highlights of the trip in- cluded: a visit to the Science Center, pointing out punks on street corners, planetarium shows, nighttime walks on Yonge St., a tour of Toronto, CN Tower, Blue Jays baseball game. Close to 200 volunteers labored for four days to com- plete the project. Each elementary class did its part to help raise the $30,000 for the playground. They went door-to-door to promote the “Buy a Board” campaign, sold candy bars, made cookies, etc. The Student Council sponsored a spook house to benefit the playground. In addi- tion, many people from the area made contributions. Architect Robert Leathers laid the plans for the playground. The stake-out was completed Wednesday, May 14. On Thursday and Friday, Contel brought their donation of men and equip- ment to set over 100 poles. Elementary and high school students helped the adults with the other parts of construction. On Saturday and Sunday there were jobs for everyone. Many volunteers came early in the morning to work all day, while babysitting services took care of young children. Finally, on Sunday night, the pro- ject was completed. It was pronounced a great success by everyone. Junior Senior Prom Friday, May 16, was the date of Fillmore's 1986 Prom. The Rogues provided music for the evening. Toward the beginning, Mr. LaRuche and Miss Kuiper had a solo dance. Then, during the first intermission of the band, pro- phecies were read by the senior class officers. During a second in- termission, wills were read by Brian Doyle and Jeff Ricketts. Heather Myers and Mike Frazier received the traditional Big Underwear Award from last year’s recipients Vanessa Roberts and Jason Ricketts. To choose the king and queen of the Prom, the senior class advisors drew names from the wishing well. Class presi- dent Louis Marino revealed the names of the winners—Louis Curry and Karen Makowski. 42 Most of the seniors were excused from classes to spend the day decorating for the 1986 Prom. Much time was spent transfor- ming the auditorium into a place suitable for the theme On the Edge of a Dream. Dozens of kleenex flowers were turned out, stars were painted on a blue crepe paper background, card tables were set up, and a white wishing well was filled with lilacs while a large silver chandelier and streamers were suspended from the ceiling. 43 Open House 1986 What do cakes and goats have in com- mon? They were both present at the 1986 Open House! Coordinated by many dedicated people, the popular annual event attracted hundreds of students and community members. In addition to speaking with teachers, parents and friends enjoyed art exhibits, an F.F.A. pet- ting zoo, baking contests, and student displays. 44 Field Day ’86 Left: The water balloon toss. Those who didn’t stay home were anx- ious to head for Darien Lake. In spite of a 10 or 15 minute holdup for a train crossing, the bus managed to arrive there without mishap. The seniors then received their tickets and entered the park to enjoy the rides. The bus return- ed to the school at about five minutes to 3:00 after a day filled with fun and excitement. Allegeny County Champs Once More For the second time in the past three years, Fillmore’s Varsity Soccer Team clin- ched the Class C. Championship in the county. They're good—right? Yes, but they worked hard to get there. The boys had played under Coach Scott Burt since their freshman year when their record was three and ten. The next year their wins totaled nine, then fourteen, to finally, this year's winning record of 17-2-1! Their loss in sec- tionals went to Rushford in a dramatic shoot-out during the section five semi- finals. The team had faced and beaten this opponent twice before, but the competition got lucky that day. This year's team was led by co-captains Jason Ricketts, Kris Stekl, and Wade Fiegl. Andy Cutting received the MIP Award. Congratulations on a great season, guys! You really made us proud. 80 Facing page—The Team: Row one: J. Piersma, G. Roberts, L. Marino, J. Ricketts, W. Fiegl, B. Due to injuries, many girls got the chance to play different posi- tions on the field and gained experience to help the team next year. Mr. Krause is just as proud of this team as he was of last year's Section V champs, because both teams showed they had winning spirits. Mr. Krause believes that it will be hard to replace the seniors next season and wishes them good luck next year. 83 Row one: J. Beardsley, C. Sweeney, B. Doyle, J. Miller, R. Crouch. Row two: J. The turnout to play these sports was excellent in 1986 and Varsity coaches already have their eyes on some of these talented players. The teams played competitively against area schools and showed a great deal of spirit on the court. There's no room to name them all here, but each player should be congratulated on his her efforts and improvement! 88 £aqlcs Girls Varsity Volleyball The team had a successful season with a 13-4 overall record. Highlights of the season include: placing second in the Allegany County league, winning eight con- secutive matches in the Wellsville Tourna- ment, defeating Rushford’s Co-Ed team in a non-league match, being fourth seated in sectionals, defeating Belmont and A-A in the first two rounds of Sectionals, and los- ing to Cuba in a tough match in the semi- finals. This year was a building year in wrestl- ing, as there were only four returning wrestlers from the previous year. Looking at the team's overall record of 2-8, many people would say the team did not have a successful season, but Coach Krause would argue that it was very successful as th9 team met every goal it set. These goals were to have a better record than last year's and to not place last in the tour- naments they entered. The most suc- cessful wrestlers were David Drury, Jim Davis, and Daryl Polaski. Mr. Krause is looking forward to next year, as most of his team is returning. 91 The Varsity baseball team com- pleted a very successful season with an 11-8 record. Highlight of the season was a 3-1 victory over DeSales in the sectionals. Leading hitter for the Eagles was Brian Varsity Baseball Doyle with a .426 average. Seniors Jeff Ricketts and Brian Doyle received plaques at the Athletic Assembly while Steve Alderman had the high point total on the team with 116 points. Seniors: B. Doyle, J. Ricketts, D. Crowe. Baseball team finished the season with an overall record of 3 wins and 8 losses, they seem to have a good future ahead of them. The team was very young and had a lot of potential. According to Coach Nolan, these boys had a good at- titude and always wanted to play ball. Team members who performed especially well were: Matt Hopkins (catcher), Mike Baginski (hitting), Todd Carpenter, and Bump Schroeder. 93 Row one: K. Barry, T. Myers, C. Gross, L. Fuller, L. This year the team started the season with a very young and inexperienced team. As the season progressed, they improved steadily and ended the year with a 5 and 7 record. The team lost to York in sectionals. According to Coach Krause, “We will lose only one senior, so the experience we gained in 85-'86 will help a lot next year. Above: Coach Krause congratulated Laura Fuller on a good play. Wait a minute? Where’s the bat?” Go ahead, make my day! Girls Softball Many athletes improved their skills and set new personal and school records this year in track. The team boasted two county champs in '85-'86: Wade Fiegl undefeated in the pole vault and Mike Bower in the long jump. Bill Worthington set records in the 800 and 3200 meter runs and was the team's second undefeated member. The highlight of the season was Fillmore's vic- tory over county champ Scio in sectionals. The girls winning 1600 meter relay record of 4:49 was achieved that day by Stacy White, Holly Fiegl, Wendy Worthington, and Debbie King. Stacy White was award- ed MVP for the girls team and Mike Bower was recognized MIP for the boys. Row one: T. Carpenter, D. Drury, D. Polaski, S. MacLaughlin, R. Tanner, D. King, D. Burger. Cadet Band Junior High Chorus Cadet Band had a most successful year of making music. Progress made in personal and group performance was outstanding this year. Some of the Junior Band Members were promoted to the Senior Band toward the end of the year and, therefore, were really busy practicing for both performing groups. The 1985-86 Cadet Band is the best Junior Band Fillmore has had in years. Mrs. Stapleton s Junior High Chorus had a good year too. They performed in several concerts, one of which took on a Disney theme. Both groups grow stronger each year. 110 Senior Band Senior Band had a very good year with many musical ex- periences. They started the school year preparing for the Houghton Homecoming Parade in October. Then from marching they had to adjust to concert music for their Winter Concert in December. In the spring they gave a concert, marched in the Memorial Day Parade, and played for the Flag Day Assembly and graduation. Row one: D. Mills, J. VanWicklin, J. Stone. D. Howard, J. Ricketts, A. Ill String Orchestra The Fillmore Central String Or- chestra is actually two groups in one—the Junior High Orchestra and the High School Orchestra. Several of the students play more than one instrument. Under Mr. Kennedy's direction, the group played for the senior citizens’ pro- grams, school assemblies, and a Spring Concert. 112 Top: Bill Minnier plays violin. Senior Choir Whether at an assembly, perfor- ming at Baccalaureate, or in the Commencement program, the Senior Choir provided Fillmore with good music. The group con- tained several very talented in- dividuals, and everyone worked to put forth a quality mixed sound. The members were—Row one: K. Fraser, B. Slocum, C. King, L. Krause. Row two: C. Minnier, M. Lewis, K. Clark, Mr. Kennedy, conductor. Row three: R. Taver- nier, D. Armison, W. Vaclavik, H. Sardina, C. Harrington. Row four: T. Kennedy, G. Roberts, A. Frazier, S. MacEwan, M. The students design- ed and built their decorations themselves. Vanessa Roberts sang the song Desperado. Created by the players, this sleepy moon nestles a weary Care Bear during the concert. Mark Vaclavik performed Dream Lover for the audience. Senior Wendy Vaclavik prac- tices her solo Nobody Loves Me Like You Do” for the group. Sunshine Bear swings from his rainbow. During the concert, the musicians played backup to soloists Jenny Richardson and Steve Howard. Kathie Christensen works on her piece When You Wish Upon A Star. Mrs. Vaclavik gives audition instructions to the group. Soprano Angie Findlay sings the melody Snowbird. Guitar Club And Handbells Row 1: K. Guiney, W. Barney. M. Nichols. A. Findlay. K. Ackerman. B. Rehearsals are held after school or in the evenings. The English handbells produce a unique musical tone. Each member is responsible for several bells. The group is much in demand for pro- grams for Senior Citizens, ban- quets, concerts, and festivals. This year the group also perform- ed at Baccalaureate.
