1983 Crest Dedication ’83 The yearbook staff dedicates the 1983 edition of Crest to Mr. Robert Williams. Mr. Williams graduated from Ithaca College with a major in music education. Since coming to FCS in 1977, Mr. Williams has taught instrumental music, directed the Elementary Band, the Cadet Band, and the Concert (Senior) Band. He acted as Allegany County Chairman for the Senior High All County Band for two years in '80 and '81. Mr. Williams was especially instrumental in establishing the uniform fund for the Senior Band during his tenure at FCS. In addition to his duties as instrumental music teacher, Mr. Williams has been active in many aspects of school life at Fillmore Central. He was junior-senior class advisor for the class of '82, a post he held until this year when his wife, Ginna, succeeded him. Mr. Williams has served as vice-president of the Fillmore Faculty Association for one year and as president for the past three years. This past year he was a member of the newly established faculty liason committee. Thank you, Mr. Williams, for your many extra hours of service to the students of FCS. Please accept our best wishes to you in all your future ventures! 2 Point with Pride We point with pride to you, Mrs. Lily, secretary extraordinaire, in recognition of the sense of meticulous organization you bring to the secondary office, your cheerfulness, and your patience! We point with pride to you, Mr. Krause, our shop teacher and coach, in recognition of your many extra hours devoted to coaching girls’ varsity soccer, girls’ varsity softball, and junior high wrestling! Congratulations to you and the members of the girls’ varsity softball team for your exciting post season performances. It is largely owing to your special efforts in developing our girls’ varsity sports program at FCS that our team made it to the sectional finals this year. 3 Who r r • - ■W--w1 ' ‘ •« Knows What Tomorrow Brings! 5 Seniors—Class of 1983 PROGRAM Processional Fillmore Central School Band “Pomp and Circumstance”—Edward Elgar Robert Williams. Reverend Richard D. Webster, the evening’s main speaker, challenged our graduates to recall both the spelling and tbe meaning of the word “baccalaureate.” Mr. Richard Kennedy directed the Senior Choir, which sang “If Only You Believe”, “We’ve Only Just Begun”, Eternal Life”, “No Man Is An Island”, and The Lord Bless You and Keep You”. Mrs. Denise Knox and junior Casda Luddick performed the processional, “Canon in D by Pachelbel. The Reverend Norbert E. Selzler concluded the service with benediction. Reverend Webster’s address, “The Limp of Blessing focused on Genesis 32:22-32 where “Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled with a man until the breaking of the day.” Our graduates were reminded that, like Jacob, they could not prevail alone against all life’s obstacles, but that they too might be changed as a result of their struggles and receive the limp of blessing.” 23 Graduation vr 24 “We Never Could Have Made it Without Special Friends Like You.” 26 Athletics Boys Varsity Fillmore fielded a very young and inexperienced team this year. Our records (3-10-3 overall, 2-5-3 league) did not reflect the team’s performances. We started slowly, but then showed signs of improvement over the course of the season. We took our opponent into overtime in six out of our last nine games. Besides showing outstanding improvement, we ended our season on two very promising notes: defeating County Champion Scio 4-3 in overtime, and losing to Belfast, the Section V Champs, by a score of only 2-0 after a scoreless first half. The experience we gained this year will help us a great deal in years to come! The roster, consisting of two sophomores, four freshmen, and one seventh grader, made Fillmore one of the league’s youngest teams. All team members showed significant improvement over the year, highlighted by two wins over Cuba late in the season. Front How: M. Vas ile. D. Ricketts. C. Cuibert, Back Row: M. Tavernier, G. Their regular season league record was 8 wins and 5 losses. Their overall record including sectional competition was 10 wins and 8 losses. Three girls, Melissa Thomas (170), Beth Williams (175), and new record holder Lisa Papke (232), broke the school record for points scored on their serve. Melissa Thomas was a unanimous first team choice for the Allegany County All Star Team. Lisa Papke made the second team. Girls' Varsity Volleyball: front—S. Tucker, A. Kulp, I,. Taylor, . Russell, L. At the end of the regular league play-offs, Fillmore was seeded twelfth for the sectional tournament with a record of eight wins and five losses. With continued improvement the team advanced to the quarter finals. We lost our last game in the bottom of the seventh inning by the score of eight to seven. New members are selected on the basis of character, leadership, scholarship, and service. To be eligible, juniors and seniors must achieve an average of 87 or higher; sophomores must have an average of 90 or better. Mr. Brenneman (right) delivered this year’s keynote address: “What is Honor? An Answer to Falstaff”. The speech took exception to statements made by the somewhat less than honorable Falstaff in Shakespeare’s historical play, Henry IV. Nancy Nystrom delivered the welcoming address. Robert Speicher provided the program’s musical accompanyment. 52 Members of the National Honor Society gather annually to light each of four candles representing Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service. One candle is left unlit until a local member’s accomplishments merit national attention. Barbara Yanda (above left) lights the Service Candle after addressing the assembly on that subject. Harry Husted. Faith Emmett, and Shelly Peet spoke on Scholarship, Character, and Leadership respectively. Pam Smith’s address concerned the significance of the Unlit Candle. The staff extends our special thanks to Mrs. Vaclavik for her invaluable assistance in composing this year’s edition of Crest. 61 Basketball Fun Night On Friday, March 18, the Crest Yearbook Staff hosted Fillmore’s First Annual Basketball Fun-Night. Boys and girls from grades five through twelve “competed” in spirited games at the school’s two gym sites. The Women’s Faculty challenged the Senior Girls to a volleyball match. In the evening’s finale. The Senior Boys took on a surprisingly fit Men's Faculty team. Local basketball fans, young and old, attended the well patronized event. 62 63 Guitar Guitar lessons are offered by Mrs. Anne Vaclavik (right) to any interested fifth or sixth grade student. The lessons are free and students are instructed in the “folk” method of guitar playing. Students are often asked to entertain in public, sing at weddings or play for school functions. At the end of the year all guitar students from previous years are invited to participate in a concert along with present members. 64 Elementary SERMONS WE SEE I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day, I’d rather one should walk with me than merely show the way. The eye’s a better pupil and more willing than the ear; Fine counsel is confusing, but example’s always clear; And the best of all the preachers are the men who live their creeds. For to see the good in action is what everybody needs. I can soon learn how to do it if you’ll let me see it done. I can watch your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run. And the lectures you deliver may be very wise and true; But I’d rather get my lesson by observing what you do. For I may misunderstand you and the high advice you give, But there’s no misunderstanding how you act and how you live. —Edgar A. Guest. ca Kindergarten Mrs. Bennet Mrs. Chamberlain last row: S. The Words from My Heart Will Always be True Senior Trip A drowsy group of seniors gathered at 5:30 in the morning on Sunday, March 27 and boarded the Thrifty Tours bus en route to Washington, D.C. The seniors stayed at the Ramada Inn, which posted its greeting on the hotel billboard. 122 Washington D.C. Highlights of the trip included a dinner theater featuring Oklahoma!, a trip to the zoo, tours of various historical buildings, and catching a glimpse of Tom Bosley. A special activity during the trip was our participation in the wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. Perhaps the most enjoyable part of the trip was sharing an experience with good friends. The seniors thank Mr. and Mrs. Bielewicz and Mr. and Mrs. Williams for chaperoning. 123 All County All State (above) Senior High All County Chorus h’ront row: L. Fraschetti, P. Smith. K. Christensen. The best score hasn’t been made yet. The best song hasn’t been sung. The best tune hasn’t been played yet; Cheer up, for the world is young! No chance? Why. the world is just eager For things that you ought to create. Us store of true wealth is still meager. As you turn these pages in future years, you are asked to remember the peo- ple who helped compile these memories for you. We are especially indebted to the efforts of Les- lie Thomas, Wendy Vaclavik, Lydia Mills, Tara Greenway, and Mrs. Vaclavik who returned to school during the last week in June to complete Crest '83. As you go your separate ways let these pictures and words recall these days and the closing lyrics of Katie Kolakowski’s class song: “We will remem- ber back to these days and the happy times that we left behind; for faces will change, and places will change, but our memories stay the same.” Would anything have been quite the same without the special friends we knew? 144 INTER COLLEGIATE PRESS MISSION.
