Our school nurse received her education at the University of Rochester; in 1964, she joined the Fillmore faculty. We appreciate her cheerful smile, the many times she has tended to our cuts and bruises, the frequent occasions on which she has been a willing chaperone, and her understanding and friendliness toward students and faculty. We gratefully dedicate CREST of 1980 to Mrs. Griffin. 2 3 Mrs. Marjorie Clark spent thirteen years as secretary to the guidance counselor. Previous positions include being secretary to the Chief of Na- val Operations and office manager of Washington Bible College. RETIREES Dr. Ralph Kleinspehn began his FCS ca- reer as a physical education teacher and retired as elementary principal after thirty- one years of service. His educational background includes Cortland State, Uni- versity of North Carolina, and Cornell Uni- versity. 4 Mrs. Catherine Vasile was a secre- tary for Eastman Koday, RG E, and State University College at Geneseo before becoming secretary for twenty-three years to the supervis- ing principals at FCS. Mrs. Rachel Frazier, who has nine- teen years of service, has been a bus driver, cafeteria worker, and cafeteria manager. She received her education at Cornell University. Mr. Burt Swales taught social stud- ies a year before coming to FCS as guidance counselor and assistant principal, a position held for thirty- two years. He is a graduate of Houghton College and Syracuse Uni- versity. 5 Reaching out is the education for our imaginative life. 7 Each must REACH to attain his goal. 8 Mr. Eddie M. Husted, Superintendent Congratulations to you, the FCS class of 1980, as you achieve high school graduation and embark on your fu- ture. You are entering the main stream of life at a point in time when opportunities and choices that are open to you are more vast then ever before. As you set goals for yourself, whether they be immedi- ate short range objectives or life-long ambitions, it is im- portant for you to remember that it takes persistent ef- fort to achieve. Set realistic goals for yourself but aim high. Aim beyond what is within your resources and abili- ties at the present moment. As the old adage says, Be sure your reach exceeds your grasp. This is one way to insure personal growth and achievement. May you always be reaching toward a goal, and when you have achieved it, may you reach out again and again to the new and varied opportunities which life will offer. My best wishes to each of you for an exciting and challenging future. . SEATED: Miss Genevieve Kolakowski, Mr. Wayne Estabrook, Mr. Gene Ben- Mrs. Catherine Vasile, School Secretary nett. There are memories from the first days of school until gradu- ation. Though it was raining, the group anxious- ly waited for Les to appear with his Blue Bird bus to take them to Toronto. The first stop after crossing the border was at the Ontario Science Centre. Then they went to The Town Inn to spend the next two nights. After unpacking, they enjoyed the indoor swimming pool, saunas, and the outdoor tennis court. For dinner that night everyone dressed up and ate at the famous Ed's Warehouse. Afterward Les drove them to the Col- onnade Shopping Plaza to view The Great Toronto Adventure. The next day, the seniors and their advisors boarded a bus for the tour of the city and a visit to Casa Loma. Afterward they went to the Metro Zoo and then to the Canadian Beef Company for dinner. To end the day, they attended a baseball game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees. The last day they packed and left the Town Inn for the CN Tower. After their ride up and down the tower, they left for Ontario Place, and then started their trip homeward with a stop-off in Niagara Falls to visit the SKYLON Tower. JUNIOR-SENIOR DINNER DANCE 34 The Junior-Senior dinner and prom was June 6. Using the theme Stairway to Heaven, the cafeteria was transformed into a starlight world; in the gym were stairs to the stars. After the dinner, senior wills, prophecies, gifts, and slides of the Toronto trip made up the program which was followed by dancing to the music of the Whirlwind. More than 150 students have taken advantage of these free lessons, many be- coming proficient artists. To quote the students them- selves: The guitar is like a best friend. It gives us the chance to express ourselves through our music. When we're unhappy or angry or lonely, it's there to make us feel better. The gives us confidence to perform in front of a group and share good times around a campfire, at a wedding or a banquet, and especially with our families where everyone feels equal. Because of gui- tar we have many new friends and have become closer to old ones. It's really great to be able to make people happy by just sharing a song ans spreading a little love. The guitar actually becomes an extension or part of each of us, a good part. We can use what we've learned for the rest of our lives. GUITAR MEMBERS (below): ROW ONE: M. Tavernier, M. Hodnett, B. Each of the three audiences responded enthusiastically to the play, and the cast is to be commended for portraying the characters so convincingly. CAST MEMBERS: Ray Bowman Brad Cayford Laurie Jacobson James Mullen Peter Coddington Linda Hennard Billie Crane Barry Ricketts Bill Emmett Pam Smith Patty MacEwan Bethany Nystrom David Huizenga Flip Winchip Suzanne Brenneman Sierra VanBuskirk Paul Fancher Vanessa Roth Director: Mr. Bruce Brenneman Flowers for Algernon is the com- pelling story of Charlie, a mentally retarded man, and the strange inter- weaving of his life with that of Algernon, a mouse. Experimental surgery has been performed on Algernon, increasing his intelligence four-fold. The operation is tried on Charlie, who rapidly changes from a moron to a genius, far more intelli- gent than his teacher or the doctors who created the technique. As Charlie approaches the peak of his brilliance, Algernon shows frighten- ing symptoms of regression. The story becomes a race against time. It is a different kind of play, poignant, romantic, funny and tragic, but with a hope for the indomitable spirit of man. 100 THE CHRISTMAS PLAY This year the elementary Christmas program was giv- en by the fifth and sixth grades. The fifth grade present- ed a play entitled A New Angle on Christmas” with students from all three classes participating. Fillmore's overall record was 14 wins —4 losses —and 2 ties. The Varsity Team won Allegany Coun- ty's triple crown; it led the league in defense, offense, and overall win-loss record. Outstanding team achieve- ments include (1) 2nd place in the Fillmore Central Soccer tournament, and (2) Allegany County B-C Championship. Individual achievements are seven league all-stars: Dewey Zeller, Dominic Cardone, Mike Cardone, Bryce Bower, Flip Winchip, Dan Thomas, and Mark Every. Ran- dy Pettit was the team's leading scorer. Dewey Zeller was awarded the Paul Vienna Award as Allegany Coun- ty's outstanding soccer player. Mike Cardone, Flip Winchip, Dan Thomas, and Peter Coddington are the team's graduating lettermen. The girls placed second in the Northern Allegany County league and won their first game in semi-finals in Section V play- offs, but were eliminated in the quarter finals by the teams who were eventually Section V champs. Next year's team will have only three starters since we are losing eight first-string players be- cause of graduation. Although we are losing all these seniors, we look forward to a successful season next year because of having a J.V. team that gained much needed experience. ROW ONE: M. Freidl, C. Marriott, K. I thank Mrs. Hold, Mrs. Wilmot, and the staff for all their help and support throughout the year. Being editor of the yearbook has been an experience I shall never forget. I have learned a great deal about pictures, copy, and about meeting deadlines. I hope the 1980 yearbook will be as meaningful to you as it is to me. I also hope the traditions of having our yearbook will continue. 152 V
