THE 1969-70 YEARBOOK STAFF PRESENTS THE 1970 CREST Fillmore Central Fillmore, New York A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; ... a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time . . . a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. —Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8. In Memoriam Nolan Ballard Before the beginning of years There came to the making of man Time with a gift of tears. Grief with a gloss that ran. Pleasure with pain for leaven. Summer with flowers that fell. Remembrance fallen from heaven And madness risen from hell. Strength without hands to smite Love that endures for a breath; Night, the shadow of light. And Life, the shadow of death. A. Swinburne 7 Table of Contents Administration and . . . . Faculty page 12 Seniors..........page 24 Underclassmen........ page 46 Organizations and........ No student can be en- tirely sure of his plans for the future, and help is always needed to guide him along the academic road. For the past 21 years at F.C.S., this help has come in the form of a personable, dedicated man who is always busy, but never too busy to help a student. He guides the 8TH graders into high school, helps underclassmen with schedule choices along the way, and assists seniors in planning for college or career. He also keeps track of ... a time to play the high school attendance register and serves as vice- principal. In addition, his style of giving the morning announcements is certainly exceptional. In many ways both large and small, it is eveident that he knows and understands the students and successfully helps them prepare for life. In grateful appreciation, we proudly dedicate the 1970 CREST to our favorite guidance counselor, Mr. Burt Swales. ... a time to relax H Administration and Faculty The time we spend as students in this school would be worthless without the guid- ance of the faculty and administration. Although there are times when we may disagree with our teachers, there are also times for learning from them and ap- preciating their interest and concern for us. The time that they have given can never be repaid. We can only endeavor to do our best to prove to them that their time has not been wasted. Leon H. Swartout. Supervising Principal Administration The world is moving so fast nowadays that a man who says it can't be done is generally interrupted by someone doing it. How true this is getting to be! We are losing opportuni- ties lor many things as the world sometimes moves by us. These opportunities, in many cases, can never be regained. The person seeing, understanding, and taking advantage of these opportunities will make the decade of the 70's his for his own use and his control. May this be the case for the Fillmore Senior Class of 1970 which is being honored by this CRLST of 1970. This issue of the CRLST again promises to be a fine book, and sincere congratulations go to the CREST staff and their advisors for a fine yearbook. Leon H. It cannot be fabricated out of public relations. It comes to us when we are alone, in quiet mo- ments, in quiet places, when we suddenly realize that, knowing the good, we have done it; knowing the beautiful, we have served it; knowing the truth, we have spoken it.”- A. Whitney Griswald Mr. Robert T. Fiegl is a man who has not only attained self-respect, but has gained our respect also. On behalf of the student body, we would like to express our appreciation to him for twenty years of dedicated service on the school board. 21 Staff Cafeteria Staff: H. Miller,P. Miller, B. Luckey. R. There was a time for making new friends, time for growing closer to the old ones. We found time to laugh, to joke, and to sit in the front row at assemblies. The minutes grew into hours as we studied, and as we worked at the teas and dances. Time was given to us in the form of one long-short week in Washington. And time was set aside for remembering. All too soon, time ran out. Yet, graduation was not the end. For us, not as seniors, but as adults, a new time was just beginning. Class Officers Back: Lowell Smith, Treas.; Paul Miller, Vice-Pres. Mr. An- thony Vasile, President of the Fillmore Rotary Club, presented a Rotary Bond to Miss Suzanne Nussey, class valedictorian. Mr. Irme Kovacs gave the address, “The Challenge of Being an American.” The school band provided the music: “Rhythm of the Winds” by Erickson, Proud Heritage” by Latham, and highlights from EXO- DUS by Reed. The diplomas were presented by Mr. Robert T. Fiegl, President of the Board of Education. The singing of the Alma Mater brought the sixty-eighth Commencement of Fill- more Central School to a close. Underclassmen Time is a vague, mysterious element that never quite cooperates with the under- classman. Sometimes, it races at supersonic speed when there are term papers or science projects due. But it always seems to creep at a snail’s pace before vacations or the 3:30 bell on Friday. Time is consumed by sports, extracurricular activities, and of course by the ancient evil of homework. And yet, when it’s all over we find ourselves wondering where the time has gone. Juniors Class Officers: B. Jeffords, Treas.: N. Allen, Sec.; J. Rees, Pres.; D. Rees, V. Pres. Seated: J. Swales, L.B. As a club member, one devotes many hours to practicing music, memorizing scripts, writing articles, and working behind the scenes at dances and dinners. Time-con- suming as these activities may be, they are the “extras” that break an otherwise monotonous routine, and make schooldays even more memorable. During a game there is always the first minute of play, the tense moment when our team is so near victory, and of course the final second when the buzzer announces an end to the contest. Time then becomes a precious memory for all time. Soccer Row One: T. Fiegl, R. Nevinger, T. Sandford. A. Guilford. G. Chamberlain, L. Lafferty. D. Paulsen, R. Paulsen. M. Woolsey, D. The team was led by all star Gary Hodnett and another standout was Gary Chamberlain, who also made the all-star team. Prospects for another fine season are in store for next year with eleven returning lettermen. 103 Basketball The 1969-70 Varsity Basketball Team compiled a 9-10 record. The soccer team received third place honors in the county soccer competition, fol- lowed by the basketball team, who received a trophy for second place. The volleyball team came in first, putting another trophy in the case. Followed by these teams, a softball team plus a track and field team captured second place titles. It has been a pleasure to learn, even though the going has not always been easy. 1 owe much to all those who have helped me. My appreciation is extended also to Mrs. Hold for her advice, to Mr. Krause for his photographs, to Don Paulsen for his snapshots, and to Sharon Rose for the inside cover photograph. I hope you will all enjoy the 1970 CREST as much as 1 have enjoyed being a part of it. Kathy Sylor, Editor-in-Chief 151
