Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1953 volume:

The Crest Staff of 1952-1953 gives to you the students, teachers, and parents the 1953 Crest. We chose as our theme the United States Government. As all of you know a government can be as sound and stable as the way it is handled. Each department in our government must co-operate fully with the other departments to create a government that runs in harmony. The Crest Staff feels that Fillmore Central is very much like our strong U.S. Government. The Superintendent of Fillmore Central School represents the President of the United States who holds the government together. The faculty and administration represents the Cabinet, the advisors of the President. The Departmen of Public Health is closely associated with our school nurse, doctor and dental hygenist. This year we think of the FFA as the Department of Agriculture. The Department of Public Works is the Bus Drivers, Custodians, and Kitchen Helpers. The Supreme Court of the United States and its work is represented by our Student Council. The Seniors are the most powerful. They are the Senators, while the Juniors, a large body, but not so powerful is known as the House of Representatives. The Sophomores and Freshmen are the members of our State Government. The grades 1-8 are very important to the United States. They are the future voters of our country. The Sports section represent the American competitors to the World famous Olympic games. Back of all these scenes are the taxpayers and they represent the ads of this Crest of 1952-1953. Democracy is close to the hearts of the people and as the years go by we hope that this issue of the Crest will be as close to you. We hope it will bring back happy memories of days gone by that were spent in our own Alma Mater. Through the combined efforts of the staff and its advisors we say Here's to you The 1953 Crest. Enjoy it as much as we've enjoyed giving it to you. ADMINISTRATION GLASSES SPORTS ACTIVITIES GRADUATION ADVERTISEMENTS 2 It is with greatest esteem that this 1953 Crest is dedicated to our District Superintendent of School, Frank L. Tuthill. In this dedication we recognize the inestimable services of a man who dedicated himself to providing the best possible educational opportunities to every boy and girl under his supervision. Mr. Tuthill, who in his early youth was a skilled shoemaker had a vision of an industrial career with his own shoe factory, says that a per- sistent call to serve in the teaching profession, changed the vision from one devoted to the soles of shoes to one devoted to the souls of boys and girls. How clear the vision was, is reflected in his professional success in the expansion of our local school systems, and in his influence upon the lives of his pupils and associates. Mr. Tuthill became principal of Fillmore High School in September 1907 and many of his devoted pupils became teachers who continued to look to him for guidance after he became District Superintendent in January 1918. They never sought his help in vain. His area of service was increased in September 1949 when Cuba and Belfast Central School districts were added to Allegany County Supervising District 1. Because of his undeviating integrity, his forceful leadership and his education achievements we proudly dedicate this 1953 Crest to Superin- tendent Frank L. Tuthill. 4 We the students of Fillmore Central dedicate 5 The 1953 Crest to: HR. FRANK I. TUTHILL THE BIGGEST DAY OF OUR FIFE .... SO FAR OUR GRADUATION 6 STANDING: Burt Swales, Lyle Hemink. During their Freshman and Sophomore years they started raising money for their Washington trip that then seemed so far into the future. During these two years the class activities only consisted of a few skating parties and hay rides. When they became the mighty Juniors they settled down to serious business and hard work for that goal they have been waiting so long for. They elected as their officers - Carol Mowers, President; Jim Rauhe, Vice-Presi dent; Sandrs Carter, Secretary; Pat Sprankle, Treasurer; June Wilcox, Business Manager; and Bob Holmes, Parlia- mentarian. The first of the tasks they undertook was the selling of the Northern Allegany Observer subscriptions. The money that they earn from their dances, plays, bookstor and candy sales will go to the treasury for the trip they hope to take next year.
