The spirits were high in the Wilson camp as Marklin's chargers prepared for the next conference game with Durham. The Cye gridders were determined to avenge last year's defeat in a sea of mud. The Durham offense was highly rated, but the unyielding defense and unbeatable spirit of the Cyclones enabled them to secure an 8-6 win over the Bulldogs. The following Friday saw the game with Rocky Mount postponed because of weather conditions, but in the Saturday night contest that followed the Cycs crushed the arch-rival Blackbirds 26-7 to regain possession of the Shelton-Looms Trophy which had been relinquished to Rocky Mount last season. The Homecoming event with always-strong Fayetteville was an exciting affair in which the Cyc machine swung into gear and completely outclassed the Bulldogs in the second half to cop a 34-6 victory. The next week the boys gave all they had in preparation for the crucial game with VVilmington where a victory would sew up the Eastern AAAA Conference champion- ship. The Cyclones' superb defense along with brilliant offensive play enabled them to return with the conference crown, whipping the VVildcats 20-6. The year's first loss came at the hands of the nonconferenee foe, Greenville. The Cyc chargers failed to hold a one-touchdown lead and the Phantoms, with a last quarter score, won by a single point, 20-19. A tired Cyclone team ventured to Baeford for the last game of the regular season. Hampered by injuries to key personnel, the Cyc gridders lost to the non-conference Bucs 20-14. A little of the tremendous spirit had faded away. VVilson played host to VVinston-Salcm's Reynolds in the playoff game to decide who would play in the State AAAA championship game. After a two weeks' stretch in which to recupcrate, the Cyc warriors played with their old spirit and enthusiasm. The Wilsoii chargers gave it all they had, but an eighty-five yard punt return and a field goal by the Black Demons spelled the winning margin, as they squeezed past us, 9-7.
