So many jobs she has to do in a day, yet still takes times to be genial and amiable with others. OUR PRINCIPAL MR. RONALD L. ILER M. A., Western Kentucky State College In looking back over our last school year, we realize that many of the lessons that we learn in our life come to us wrapped up in the life of another person. We recognize Mr. Iler as one of these persons. His life is characterized by sincerity and steadfastness of purpose that makes no com- promise with anything less than his best. By these principles combined with qualities of enthusiasm for his work, his sensitiveness to the needs of our school, and his genuine per- sonality, he has set for us an example for a more meaningful way of life. Radford College Business Education V 1 2 LCOKING BACK At the first of September of '55 Sixty eighth graders were quite alive, As the class of '59 entered high school that year, So they tell me, I wasn't here! Looking back the memories are crystalline clear. Say the honorable seniors as graduation draws near. We were apprehensive that first year, and hopeful, too, As to what unknown course that the years would pursue After being confused and getting all turned around, The eighth grade was over just as we settled down. We returned as freshmen with plenty of pep, Determined that with any class we'd keep in step. New subjects like algebra and Latin we met, The challenge of which caused us sometimes to fret. As sophomores we musn't forget to note, We captured first place with our Homecoming float. And among other events we must not overlook, 'Day-O' was a song that went down in the books. As juniors, our responsibility we did not shirk, We labored on the Prom and had fun while we worked. That year we again rode the victory boat, By winning once more with our Homecoming float. Judith and Floyd represented our class At Girls and Boys' State in the summer just past. We sponsored the bloodmobile, the quota to reach. Donors aplenty were secured by each. We're the first to include underclassmen on the annual We're sure future seniors this idea will not chaff. In literary ability our class does not lack. staff Participants in such contests deserve a pat on the back. Carol Fay and Evelyn starred in the one-act play, And the cheers of the audience remains to this day. As the recipient of the Betty Crocker Homemakers' Aw To a home of her own Wanda Hutchens looks forward. Of beauty and queens our class has no lack. Their honors must certainly total quite a large stack! Lovely Pat and Jo Ann honors did glean, And Junie was voted Homecoming Queen. As Harvest Queen, Peggy Spencer did reign, And Homecoming King Stovall got his share of fame! Sadly now the seniors go their separate ways. We've come to the end of our high school days! Just then comes a rap and the future peers in. This is only the beginning, says he, not the end! - -Anonymous 24 ard, We ?'c , . x SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS 1 c assmates in thexr all 1mportantf1na1 year are left to 1 tght V1ce Pres1dent and S C A Representative, Davxd Stovall Secretary Jo Ann Hancock Presldent G C Huddle Treasurer Brenda Merriman S C A R epresen tat1ve Betsy PI l113.U13H Reporter Peggy Spencer Sponsors, Miss Nan Thompson and Mrs Nell Poston 5. gr .. ig A , ,M gh, Gayle Grey Arnn Elsie Elaine Ashley Frances Anita Baker Dewev Cecil Baldwin GAYLE GREY ARNN: S.C.A. 95 Library Club 95 Tri-Hi-Y 9--Secretary, 10--Treasurer, l1,l2-- President5 Debating 10,115 F.T.A. 10--Secretary-Treasurer5 J.V. Effort is made to help the students meet life situations realistically and to handle those situations successfully. In the mock convention Mike Eanes cam- paigns for Vice President of the Demo- cratic Party While Wanda Hutchens and Pat Lakey give the campaign cheers. Much of our wheat is grown in this area, explains Benny Via to fellow class- mates, Marilyn Turner, Donna Stegall, Donald Lackey, and Betty Kirks. STIMULATE INTEREST IN VARIOUS FIELDS Our English Department endeavors to develop in each student the ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The English program aims to instill in each pupil an appreciation of literature plus a thorough knowledge of fo r m al grammar. Fran Dalton and Mike Joyce prepare films to be shown as a vital part of English class. Carolyn Brown explains the importance of the Globe Theatre in Sha.kespeare's plays to Louis Eanes and Regina Baker. Senior English students create charac- ters to bring Chaucer's England to life. Under the watchful eye of Mrs. Rives, Connie Tilley diagrams a sentence to explain the predicate adjective to Eugenia Barnes, Marilyn Turner, and Jenna Lou Compton. pf' in f THE SPUTNIK AGE STRESSES THE Science is very important during these lightning changes of a changing World. The department here at Fieldale High School has joined the pace by develop- ing an habitual reliance on openminded study of es- tablished facts, to rouse the students to inquire, to encourage them to explore, to develop an interest in all living and non-living things, and to create a con- structive attitude for the good of mankind. Mr. Rakes's body enables biol- ogy students, Peggy Duniord, Jimmy Crawford, Larry Beheler, and Betty Turner, to understand the wonders of the human body. Something is sure to happen when Linda Tilley Gloria Shelton, Terry Martin, Bill Lucas, and Bobby Joyce conduct an experiment in Mr Reece S chemistry class. sf' MPORTANCE OF SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS Without a working knowledge of mathematics, a person cannot get ahead in any type of work. Alge- bra and other high school mathematics are used by the factory worker, the technician, a.nd the business- man. More advanced mathematics is needed by the engineer, the physicist, the chemist, the biologist, and the psychologist. One field of mathematics that is becoming increasingly useful is statistics, which is used by business and industry. At Fieldale High School, we try to get a foundation in mathematics that will carry us to success in our chosen careers. Mike Tilley uses a compass in solving a math problem. Wanda Hutchens, Larry Goss, and Richard McBride strive to improve their reasoning power through a study of geometry. i 121.42125Efft75fi?44fY2e2N5iFQ3lq'N, HOME ECONOMICS AND INDUSTRIAL ARTS IMPART -.-. :I If- dl ll I 'I - .nl .21 Demonstrating their creative skill in sewing are Jane Hall and Barbara Wyatt. Cooking, sewing and home nursing-- these are only a few of the units which a girl will study when she chooses to take home e c o n o m i c s. Child care, family finance, in t e r io r decorating, housing, family living, and food preservation all help her to be a better family member to- day as well as prepare her for the future. Through Vocational Home Economics in high school, girls learn the fundamentals necessaryfor being successful homemak- ers of tomorrow. Emma Jane Via and Ann Stovall make a practical application of their unit in food preservation. The valuable knowledge of home nursing enables Jean Plaster to ad- minister proper care to her patient, Gloria Martin. I i s x Q , V,i.: EV 1 K .i, , Q, . RACTICAL AND SKILLFUL KNOWLEDGE... Industrial arts provide work experiences that will enable astudent to think logically, plan well, and eventually reach a solution to his ovm problem. I.n addition to training for the initial office job, the stenographic offering may enable astudent to progress to a promotional position. Two-year courses are offered in typing and shorthand-trans- cription, and one each in general business and bookkeeping. The aim is to teach the skills of these subjects, and also give attention to the development of desirable work habits and personality and character traits necessary to the successful office worker. A STUDY OF OTHER NATIONS THROUGH LANGUAGES... a.nish as a The objective of the Spanish classes is to learn Sp living language and to know the culture of our neighbors to the south. The Spanish Department has records of popular songs re- corded in Mexico and also textbooks used in Mexican public schools. In the Spanish Club the members learn folk dancing, and every day conversation, instead of book Spanish. tud nts often write playlets and present them in assembly. - R 1 Thes e This year they planned a pinata fSpanish partyj for the parents. The Latin classes also presented a play on Roman life for the entertainment and information of the student body. L atin students demonstrate the ancient burying customs of the Romans to fellow students during an assembly program. Latin students designed the stage and their own costumes in an effort to better under - stand the Romans and their way of living. ROUND OUT THE SCHOOL PROGRAM Guidance to be of value must have the co- operation of the entire school staff. The guidance c ou n s el o r has to do with group counseling, individual counseling, testing program, student-W i t hd r aw als, college scholarships, vocational preparation, sched- ule planning, follow-up studies, conferences with parents, and citizenship training. The philosophy of the Guidance Department is as follows: CU Teachers to do effective teaching must teach faith in worth-while things. f2J Parents and teachers must help in setting standards for youth to live by. C35 Students must have instilled within them the idea that the best discipline is that which comes from within and not that which is im- posed from without. The library as a center for materials for inform- ation, recreation and inspiration is the heart of the learning activities of the school. Skill in the use of library tools such as the card catalog, Readers' Guide, and the various indexes which are keys to the mater- ials found in the library make the library more valu- able. kia. Distributive Education is vocational education for those engaged in the distribution of goods andfor ser- vices. The students receive classroom instructions as well as on-the-job training. This program offers many opportunities to students in the field of distri- bution. The program prepares students for an occu- pation before graduation. ,J w,92kIh sf. .I mrs' RA ZIUN :fx- W., X 3 1 5 X X 'N fm , rs-F5 f ,4 Q , . We can choose which one of many kinds of automobiles we will buy. Same way with refrigerators, radios, television, furniture, houses, and babybuggies. We can choose which grocer to whom we give our business, which butcher, newspaper, magazine or smoking tobacco. We can choose our wives, our jobs, our church, our President. There is even a choice of which under- taker will bury us. This Right of Choice is more thanan interesting sidelight on life in America. It is bothacause and a result of the way business and industry operates. It affects our jobs, the way we invest our savings, our stan- dards of living. This Right of Choice makes business, sometimes breaks business. It keeps us on our toes. It keeps prices low, quality high. It prevents monopoly. It is largely responsible for the high standard of living of Americans. It results inasystemthat keeps our economy alive, our jobs modern, our income high. It's our American Way of Life. You can call it the Free Enterprise System, Free Trade, or Competitive Capitalism. But it depends upon our individual Right to Choose and decide for ourselves. It is a right we must never lose. We trust that the members of the Class of 1959 will always make the right choice. MARTINSVILLE NYLON PLANT E.I. Du PUNT de NEMUURS CU., INC. N N 2 WWQ5 Nba?
