They had several performances outside of the traditional football half-times. Under the direction of Drum Majorette Nancy Gamel, the band attended the University of Missouri's Band Day, the District playoffs at Festus, the Quarter Finals at Festus, The Semi-Finals at Chillicothe and the Christmas Parade. Bernard Laiben and Heath Thomure led the band for the Homecoming Parade and Halftime performance. Long-Time Coach Retires Mr. Godwin Then And Now Mr. Murrell Godwin has been an educator and coach for a total of 42 years, the last 38 years being at Festus. Before coming to Festus in 1948, Coach Godwin taught at Perryville, Crystal City, and Popular Bluff. He also served in the military from 1944 to 1946. He has taught Industrial Arts, Physical Education, General Science, and Physiology. He is best known, however, as a long-time coach and athletic director. Mr. Godwin has coached football, basketball, and track in the Festus R-6 School District. He was the second person to assume football coaching duties for Festus R-6 and coached the first undefeated R-6 football team in 1949. He also coached champion football teams in both Perryville and Crystal City. In his years of coaching, Mr. Godwin compiled a 109-73-10 record in football. He also directed the Festus Summer Recreation Program from 1950 to 1956. Because of his outstanding commitment, Mr. Godwin was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1951.
