Not since 1949 had Festus won the conference championship. And they did it in a spectacular way, climaxing the season with a 20-0 victory over the highly rated Northwest Lions. The Tigers combined an explosive offense and a stingy Defense in their winning formula, leading the conference in both categories. The only blemish on their record was a 6-6 homecoming tie with Desoto. But the biggest disappointment of all was being edged out of a state playoff berth by the North County of Deslogc Raiders. The Tigers point total was one of the best in the state, but the Raiders' was phenomenal. Festus placed eight players on the all-conference first team and thirteen others on the second team and honorable mention. And for the first time quarterback Ron Goetz was given all-state honorable mention and Tom Poole made the St. Louis Post Dispatch Suburban South team as a defensive back. ROW ONE: Ron Goetz.
