So, there was a need for Coach Murrell Godwin to build a team that would try hard all the time and never quit. With Coach Godwin's help the boys built themselves a team that broke many records with a junior division that practically re-lettered the list of records here at F.S.H.S. In the senior division Jim Bay set a new record for the 880-yard run with a time of 2:04. The junior division set new records in almost every event. Tom Henderson bagged the crown for the 100-yard dash when he ran it in 10.3 seconds. The 220-yard dash acquired a new master when Charles Culton ran it in 23.6 seconds. Henderson again set a record—rthis one in the 440-yard dash with a time of 53.7 seconds. The 120-yard low hurdles was done in 15.1 seconds by Dan Poggen-moeller. Distance man Mike Almond set a new record for the mile run when he ran it in 4:52. Team runners also captured new records. A 440-yard relay team consisting of Henderson, Collier, Culton, and White had a time of 46.0 seconds. Poggenmoeller, Turley, McFarland, and White ran the 880-yard relay in 1:40.6 for a new crown. The mile relay team of Poggenmoeller, White, Almond, and Collier had a time of 3:43.8. In field events Rick Turley pole vaulted 11 3 ’. Rick also high jumped 5'6” for a new crown. The broad jump record was captured by Chalres Culton who covered a 19’1 2” distance with his record setting jump. The big story of the year is the fact that the team took all three of the big area meets the County, Mineral Area, and the District meets all in the same year. This is the first time that the team has done this and it is a big achievement. Several records were broken this year. In the senior division, Rick Turley captured the pole vault record with a vault of 12' 8 and one-half'. This is also a new county record. Dean MacFarland has the record in the new two-mile run.
