Volume 39 The buildings were .begun in September 1961 and finished completely in November of 1962. Then came the task of sodding the grounds. Last spring the shrubbery was planted. The most outstanding feature being the tall holly and blue spruce trees between the buildings (Snow scene). The steps at the right descend to the gymnasium. They were begun in August but the rains hindered the progress and they still needed work where the picture was made. They increased the available parking space since wide Westward can be used. The back of the buildings at the bottom show the grace and beauty of the back. The gym at the bottom left and the academic on the right. King Neptune The Annual Junior-Senior Prom was held Saturday May 15, 1965 in the Ralph B. Tynes Gymnasium. The theme, King Neptune's Court, was an underwater scene. As students entered the lobby, the words King Neptune's Court plus driftwood on the floor and mermaids on the wall made snatches of conversation heard through the previous weeks take meaning. Ferns Linde and Richard Cook promenade. Preceding the Grand March individual couples entered a scene which resembled the ocean floor. To their right, Jerry Algiere (King Neptune) was seated on a gold throne high-lighted by green sequin sea horses. A blue drape complimented the platform on which the throne was placed. Their eyes then focused on the far wall which had been covered with blue, paper draped with fish net, and sprinkled with a rainbow of fish. Re-entering the gym following the promenade. Seniors were pleased to know the success the juniors had with the ceiling, which was a cascade of blues. The twisted construction paper resembling waves added to the feeling of a real ocean. A sunken treasure chest filled with jewels and a boat added to the stage decorations. Immediately all eyes were drawn to the formals when the band began to play. Full skirted formals and semi-full were dominate, with bell shaped and empire waist being recessive. Bouquets of nosegays along with carnations and orchids proved to be most popular. A highlight of the evening was a skit entitled, Prom Troubles , put on by the Sophomore servers. After the intermission, couples slowly trickled out on their way to various after-the-prom parties. Student The Festus Senior High Student Council has had a busy and successful year. Many projects have been improved because of past evaluations of other councils projects for the benefit of future students. To be able to be a success this council had to have training. This years council was widely traveled to be trained. President Garrett Walton attended a National Workshop at Camp Cheely, Colorado and a NASC National Convention at Lexington Kentucky. Joyce Watkins, Pat McNeil and Bill Roug-gly attended MASC Workshop at Missouri University in June. Bill was selected Student Council Officers I to r, Lynn Rudisoiie; secretary, Gorrett Walton; president, Genevieve Holligon,- sponsor. Pot McNeil; vice president and Bill Rouggly; treasurer. Council Is Trained for Leadership as state alternate to the House of Burgesses in Williamsburg, Virginia. Later in the year Pat and Bill benefitted from a workshop at Farmington, Missouri. Joyce Watkins, Sue Lucas and Alice Zimmerman, who is a former member of the SC, were delegates to the TAPS Convention at Jeff City, Missouri. Pix 3—The Tiger Crowning was one of Olets' most tense but happy moments at Festus Senior High but she appears poised and calm in her yellow formal. Violetta Nuestro, third foreign exchange student to Festus Senior High, is a citizen of the Philippines. The two preceding here were Cevdet Caner from Turkey in 1964 and Norah Prudkin of Argentina who was 1963 graduate of Festus. The third daughter of four children of Mr. and Mrs. Sixto Nuestro, Violetta was born in the town of Indang, Cavite on August 29, 1948. The youngest among the three girls, she had been an honor student at the Indang Elementary School. The following year they moved to a suburb of Manila, and she graduated as the Salutatorian from the Pasay City High School. Pasay is the present home of her family. The eldest among her sisters is Linda, who works as a secretary in the Wyeth-Suace Laboratory Inc. and is married to a U.S. navyman. Lita comes next, and she is a fourth grade teacher. The youngest is only four years old and the only boy. The following paragraphs ore Olet's own thoughts,- It has been my dream to travel abroad since my childhood days although I did not think it would be realized. I thought it was just going to be a dream. My ambition came to reality when my school chose me as one of the candidates for the American Field Service Scholarship to spend a year of study and experience in the U.S. I was lucky enough to pass the interview (and everything), and was granted the scholarship in June of last year. I found that I was one of 72 Filipino boys and girls who were going to different communities, families and schools in the U.S. Now some of the ideas and impressions I had about the U.S. before were changed when I learned about this great country. I found out that living actually in a family here and studying in an American school will help open my eyes to the truth about the U.S. I consider my family here as my second family. We are like a real family and I will always feel that I am a part of them and I think they feel the same about me. I learned that in everything I do to give and take, have patience, strong determination and a good sense of responsibility. It is going to be terrible I know, when the day comes when I leave my family, my school, my community and my friends here in this great and wonderful country. Believe me, I do not know how to soy goodbye to each and every one. But after spending some time deliberating about what I have learned in the U.S. and the facts about this country but, on the other hand I hope I did well in imparting to your people an actual picture of my own country and its people. I confess that this has been an exciting, eventful and marvelous year for me thus making my stay here the most unforgettable in my life. 66 of Students and Promotes Goodwill pjx i—Olet and her American family, Mr. Eugene Butler, Olet, Beckie and Mrs. Harriet Butler. Green beenies characterize our freshman year—since we were the last ones to wear the traditional tarns. We entered school with 213 strong, the last freshman class at Festus High. Our sophomore year was victorious when we won the bulb drive. Our sophomore class with 170 students completed the three classes at the new Senior High. With 160 jolly juniors we advanced to the Senior High as upperclassmen. About 14% of the students became members of Honor Society. We tied with the seniors in the point system for the year, but unfortunately we lost the deciding point. Senior rings and pictures higlighted our senior year. Our years at Festus will be long remembered because of students participation in band, choruses, scholastic groups, and extra-curricular activities. Our class is the first to complete all three years at Festus Senior High. The aim of the Junior class is to be the first to graduate 200 strong. With 197 students at the present, this class will soon reach its goal. Graduating in 1966-67, this class will be the 56th. In their Sophomore year, the Underclassmen displayed a talent for salesmanship. With several Sophomores setting the pace, they overwhelmingly outsold every other class. In their 1966 year, the Juniors had a highly successful candy sale. Being the second class to graduate from the newly established Senior High finds much difficulty in adjusting to the new environment of different schools. In the field of intelligence, 38 Juniors have become members of the National Honor Society. This total is greater than the previous total of Probationary members the year 1 before. Great imagination is portrayed by the beautiful Christmas scene in the Ralph B. Tynes Gymnasium. Many comments and an article in the school paper were the results of hard work and patience on this painstaking project. Dear Meg: Wanta hear about the senior trip? On May 30, 110 graduates, sponsors, mamas, and teachers climbed aboard 3 silver monsters (Greyhound Buses) at Fes-tus Senior High School. We settled down into deep plush seats which were to be home for us for the next ten days. We mode good time across Illinois and Indiana. Somehow the 3 buses got separated, and we dribbled into the Hotel Pritchard in Hunting-ton, W. Va. A restful night prepared us for the beautiful mountain scenery of Virginia the next day, as well as the crooked roads. The John Yancey Motel at Williamsburg was with a swimming pool and lighted fountains. Chilly as the night was, most of us had a swim. The next morning we saw a film giving historic background at the Williamsburg center—everybody except Sylvia Parriott and Mrs. Manley who had to go to a doctor for sore throats. Then we wandered through the village that has been restored by Rockefeller millions. In the afternoon we drove over to Jamestown for another film and a trip to the museum plus a look at the replica of the Mayflower. We caught our first glimpse of the Capitol dome and Washington's monument at dusk that day. But our hotel was a complete disappointment. If you want an explanation of that statement, any senior will fill you in. Early the next morning the message was whispered around that we were to bring our suitcases to the sidewalk in front of the hotel. We evacuated that place in 5 minutes flat! The sight seeing buses loaded and in the commotion they drove off. leaving Mrs. Dreyer standing in the street. The other casualty was Joan Bradford's camera left in a dresser drawer on the 7th floor. Both items were later recovered. That night we stayed at the Dodge House, o decided improvement over the previous hotel. Several of us attended a symphony concert, some went to movies, but we who had our own dance in the hotel ballroom had a real ball with some students from Mexico. The Good-Neighbor Policy was really at work there. The next morning we had sightseeing buses to Mt. Vernon and Arlington Cemetery. We were most impressed by seeing the changing of the guard at the grave of the Unknown Soldier. We also paid our re-pects at the grave of President Kennedy. After lunch at the House Cafeteria we scurried to the steps to have our picture taken with our Congressman Richard Ichord and Massachusetts Congressman William Bates (brother-in-law of Mr. Mrs. Dreyerl. Both men sacrificed time to greet us as Mr. Ichord was leaving for Viet Nam and Mr. Bates had a bill coming up that afternoon. We stopped in Philadelphia to catch a glimpse of Independence Hall. We rolled into the Governor Clinton Hotel a little awed by seeing New York first at night. But not for long. Some of us managed to find Times Square and ride the subway before bedtime .. . Phyllis Mc- Clenahon got her directions from o Chinese by sign language. Mr. Shoush herded us all onto a subway the next morning early without anyone's getting caught in the door and we were off to the Fair. After a preliminary guided tour by bus at the fairgrounds, we were well enough oriented to take off on our own. It is not crowded; food is not exorbitant; and purse snatchers do not lurk behind you. Eighty per cent of the exhibits ore free. Among our favorite pavillions were: the Belgian Village, the Spanish pavillion with the folk dancers, the Vatican pavillion with The Pieta , General Motors, Johnson Wax, and the International Plaza. Ah, New York! The Empire State Building elevator, the dress shop that Mrs. Ladd and Mrs. Gibbs found, the Broadway play Any Wednesday that six of us saw, the height of St. John the Divine, the panhandler in Chinatown, Macey's, Luchow's, the discotheque dancer on Times Square. Gimbels, the food smells in Chinatown, the Chrysler Building, Wall Street, Mrs. Dreyer's hair and Mrs. Manley's feet, the stage-door crowd waiting for Barbara Striesand, the roar of the subway—such are memories of the Big Town. The trip home had its big moments too. We hod a drive through the Gettysburg Cemetery and Battlefield which surprised us all. Everyone must have thought os I did of the tremendous folly in neighbor's hiding behind rocks shooting at each other. The last night on the road was spent in a delightful hotel in Washington, Pa. We arrived back at F.H.S. right on schedule with everybody and his luggage safely accounted for. All the rummage sales, car washes, and ticket selling paid off—in fact, I ended the year with a $3.35 refund! As ever, Josephine This knife pointing of Festus was done by Susan Jean Lucas, a Junior, who is taking her second year of Art. The technique used is called scumbling. This is an abstract painting of a winter night in the city. To achieve the best meaning of this painting, you should look at it from a distance. We wish to thank our local merchants and businessmen who have supported our school over the years and who have helped in many ways to make our school what it is. We are happy that these merchants realize that this is truly enduring advertisement since the alumni will refer back to it many times and will recognize that it is the cooperation of the merchants that have made the financing of this yearbook possible.
