% ,’{r - t “« THE Students Reflect on Festus R-6 Senior The Spirit of High School FOREWORD The Great Spirit—first used as our school emblem in the 1936 Piper, the original FHS annual—signifies the challenge of the future. When the Tiger mascot was chosen in 1946, the Spirit was retained, and has become an important element of FHS tradition. Since the Great Spirit is the emblem of our school, we have chosen the Indian, whose dignity and picturesquenss represent the freedom and democracy of America, for the cover of this edition of the Tiger. We hope this book will be a tribute to the administration, faculty, and students that have made our school the wonderful institution that it is. It is hoped that in future years this Tiger will be a testimonial REFLECTING the achievements and aspirations of the people who have made our alma mater great. DEDICATION The staff respectfully wishes to dedicate the 1965 Tiger to the Board of Education. These dedicated men, through their unceasing efforts, have given us a beautiful school of which we, the students, and the entire community may be justly proud; and have provided an educational atmosphere designed to prepare us for our future endeavors and to give us a richer and fuller outlook on life. The couples entered and bowed in pairs. The scene of the thirty-eighth annual Tiger Crowning was the Ralph B. Tynes Gymnasium, Monday evening, March 1. The royal affair was preceded by the spring-summer style show, presented by Mrs. Elsie Wampler. Climaxing the evening was the Tiger Crowning. Ten girls and ten boys composed the Royal Court for the retiring king, John Davis, and the retiring queen, Bobette Hughes. One lady-in-waiting and one male successor were in the dark as to their oncoming reign. The commentator for the crowning was Diane Carrow. As tension grew among the crowd and candidates, Diane carried the ball with a calm tone. As the prospective queens entered the court, they were presented beautiful bouquets from Fults Florists by the flower girls, Janet Lucas and Anita McCormack. Finally the big moment arrived. The time had come to reveal the names of the Tiger King and Queen. Every- one was silent, everything was quiet except the rattling of the envelopes being opened by Diane. Then, she said, The 1965 Tiger King is Nick Borusiewich. Nick took John's place on the royal throne and the crowner, Claudia Althauser, crowned him. King Nick. Then Diane announced, The 1965 Tiger Queen is Sherry Scott. A scream was heard and Sherry cried. She took her place on the royal throne beside Nick, and Bobette bowed graciously to Sherry. John Summers placed Sherry's crown upon her head. Then Gerald Chappue took numerous pictures to insure a lasting remembrance. Gifts were given to the King and queen by Smiths Jewelers of Festus. Sherry received a necklace with a miniature Festus ring suspended from a tiny gold chain. The ring has drawn many admiring looks. Nick received a tie clasp of the same nature. Both looked happy with their new titles. King Nick and Queen Sherry. Donna Wilfong, Alumni, registers while Jo Ellen Grohs and Miss Moody welcomes her to the Christmas Tea. The Student Council has a most important role in the creation and maintenance of good school spirit. It has charge of orientation regulations and the chartering of new clubs; sent three representatives to thesate workshop; and revised the student handbook. A talent show to finance its activities is held each year. Its most important project is providing a scholarship to some deserving student yearly. Student Council Senior Members are: (TOP ROW) Jock Lovelace, John Shoush (SECOND ROW) Sherry Scott, Patti Tynes (THIRD ROW) Jim Funk, Feme Linde, and Terry Gibbs. Council members hold meetings every other Thursday in the conference room. Our Student Council is more inclusive in its purpose because it represents the entire student body. Its main roles are to develop council leadership and to stimulate character and citizenship in the student body. The Student Council looks beyond the boundaries of its own campus and extends its services to the community. Our council is what our school makes it. By periodically examining our goals, the council can play a more influential role in the student life of our school. Pep assembly at homecoming. When the time came to decide on a picture to represent this section, it seemed only logical to use the publications class. This class is the hub of the school! It has contact with both the students and faculty, acting as a mirror to reflect their thoughts and actions to the public. The members of the class are active participants in school life, and therefore act as representatives of the various students groups. They are, in general, goodwill ambassadors. 45 Administration and Faculty Are Experienced and Well Trained The faculty has had an exceptional background in preparation for their teaching positions. The thirty teachers at FSHS have completed 5,000 credit hours of college work at 32 colleges and universities and have been teaching 511 years. It is this outstanding staff that has, for a large part made our school the great institution it now is. The faculty and guests enjoyed a dinner at the R-8 School during the week before school began. Trip Closes High School On March 23, 50 seniors and 10 sponsors left on the senior trip aboard a deluxe air-conditioned Continental Trailways bus. Having spent the first night in Columbus, Ohio, the bus went on to Washington, D.C., where the students toured the Nations Capitol, Mt. Vernon, Arlington National Cemetary, the White House, Washington and Lincoln Memorials, and various other government buildings. The tour continued to Philadelphia where the Betsy Ross house, the Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall were visited. In New York City the United Nations was toured, a cruise around Manhattan Island was taken, N.B.C. and Rockefeller Center were visited, and a day was spent at the World's Fair. En route to Montreal, the students stopped at West Point. In Montreal and Ottawa, a general tour was taken of government buildings and other points of interest. Leaving Ottawa, a night was spent at Niagara Falls and the tour continued to Detroit. The Ford Museum of American History was among the places visited there. Having spent a night in Detroit, the happy but weary students returned home on June 2. When bus was lost in town, local police escorted them out. Beauty of the Rotunda Dome of Capitol pictured. We wish fo thank our local merchants and businessmen who have supported our school over the years and who have helped in many ways to make our school what it is. We are happy that these merchants realize that this is a truly enduring advertisement since the alumni will refer back to it many times and will recognize that it is the cooperation of the merchants that have made the financing of this yearbook possible.
