Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1961 volume:

FESTUS HIGH SCHOOL The snows of winter came in the spring last year. Our seasons, like our lives can get mixed. Only knowledge and wisdom gained by time well spent can preserve our youth. Time is the instrument by which we measure our days. We study 295,000 minutes. We relax 7,200 minutes. We exercise for 9,900 minutes. Our studies prepare us for the future. Our ex- ercises keep us fit. Our relaxation aids our physical and mental well being. Wc should spend each precious minute usefully, for the hours of youth quickly pass, and are never regained. Only regrets can be reaped from wasted time; happiness can only be gained from time well spent! Learn as if you’d live forever, live as if you’d die tomorrow .... THE TIGER FESTUS HIGH SCHOOL FESTUS MISSOURI 1961 VOLUME 34 OUR THEME FOR 1960-61 TIME: AN IRREPLACEABLE INGREDIENT The clock of life is wound bur once And no man has rhe power To tell just when the hands will stop At late or early hour Now is the only time we own Love — live — toil with a will Do not wait until tomorrow For the clock might then be still. NOTE: This poem was sent to us by Rubinstein, the violinist. It is inscribed in a uatch presented to him by the late Will Rogers. 4 We, the Publication Class of 1960-61, most affectionately dedicate this year's Tiger to the TEENAGER, that glorious period of life where everything is WONDERFUL or TERRIBLE; the time when girls wear a dyed to match skirt and sweater, a pleated skirt, a shirt-waist dress, tunic or a wescot, a bandstand skirt with knee socks to match. The hair styles of girls are changing from longer hair-do's to short ones; from the Page Boy to the Bob or Bubble, from the Pony Tail to the French Twist. The time when every boy wears sweaters and socks to match, corduroy suits with vests, ski sweaters, continentals and letter jackets, flat tops and princetons. There will be other times, but none like this; there'll be other ages, but none so wonderful, there will be other years but not so exciting. p . r sv iv - Ik. £ O. trruv m P f fB 5-TUS H0U8 At- A MA'T‘8 PLCA-MtJT E -MCI fPP3 P RALPH B. STUDENT COUNCIL THEME FOR YEAR Festus Students Vote In Mock National Election. In 1952 a committee was formed at Festus High School to investigate the pros and cons of a high school student council. In 1953, a favorable report having been received from the committee, the first student council at Festus High was organized. In this, its eighth year at F.H.S., the student council has become immensely improved through the experiences and opportunities which its members have received. This year’s council sponsored the student assemblies and rhe student council movies. The proceeds from these events were used to form the student council scholarship which is given annually to a deserving F.H.S. senior. The various committees of the student council tend to make life and studying at Festus High School more pleasant activities. Festivities started with a, parade in which each of the classes and clubs sponsored floats. Other activities included an open house and chili supper sponsored by the Senior Mothers. At the registration of the guests we found we drew seventy-one alumni from as far off as New Castle, Delaware. Dr. John Rutledge, a local physician, was the oldest graduate attending. The doctor graduated in 1915. The celebration drew in the wonderful people whose deeds have built the traditions of F.H.S. The homecoming was the grand success of the year because of the tireless effort put forth by all concerned. This spectacle was one of the most worthwhile events which our school has accomplished and deserves to be an annual affair. VISITED An added attraction was presented to the students and faculty members of F.H.S. during the 1960-61 school year, when Miss Elba Alcira Bustillos, a guest teacher from Bolivia, spent two weeks with the Festus School system. Miss Bustillos visited many parts of our country from the time she left her own home at Oruro, Bolivia, and the day she arrived in Festus. She took special training at the Language Center of the American University in the Nation’s Capital, flew to Austin, Texas, for a semester of study at Texas University, and then traveled to Jefferson City for a short briefing. Finally, on January 25, Miss Bustillos reached Festus. While in our town. Miss Bustillos attended classes in the high school, grade school, and kindergarten. Keeping as full a schedule as she could man-age, Miss Bustillos attended a book review, teachers' homes, and activities of the school. Terminating her visit was an assembly during which she spoke and presented Festus High School with a dancing mask and the flag of her country. This charming visitor made the two dreary, snow-bound weeks of January 25 through 9 as bright as a June day and the citizens of Festus and the members of the school system came to realize that our South American neighbors are interesting, sincere, intelligent, and most important of all, friendly. We also racked up more victories than a Bengal squad has done in over ten years as we headed for a twenty game season. TEACHERS FACULTY AND STUDENTS ARE KEPT INFORMED Good Morning, the morning announcements, says Mr. Shoush every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. Traditional ceremony of Pledge to the Flag begins the week. The high school faculty is comprised of twenty-eight faculty members; twenty-one full time teachers with five periods giving instructions, the principal and superintendent teaching one class each to give themselves more personal understanding of the pupils and their problems. Four faculty members who give special services to assist the teachers ar Mr. Litton, the counselor, Mrs. Hoiligan, the librarian, Mr. Nickless, the study hall teacher and Dr. Meyers who has special classes. The upperclassmen and their dates gazed starry-eyed at the enchanting theme, as they made their Grand. March. Mr. Walter Crain introduced each couple, attired in their gay Prom finery. Entertaining the Prom-enaders” with their delightful music, was Herm Drake and his band. Their smooth and versatile style was enjoyed by all. They completed the evening leaving the group as happy and contented as they were when they first looked upon the lovely Sayonara. 108 SAYONARA,” FOR PROM Entering the ballroom, those attending, immediately sighed at the stage, which held the main theme. It appeared as if one were in the quaint Japanese village. Looking at the snowcapped reaches of Fujiyama. Pine trees cuddled the slopes of the mountain reaching to the distant areas. In the middle of the floor, a delicate Pagoda shed its tiers of beauty to the multicolored murals, portraying various phases of the Oriental’s life. Being seated, their minds turned to the gorgeous table settings and the brightly hued flowers that adorned them. On the main table, awaited a banquet fit for a king. Potato chips, sandwiches, hors d'oeuvres of different kinds were served, along with cokes and savory punch. Favors of delicate fans and ancient chopsticks appeared to change colors under the several light schemes. The ceiling was speckled under the red and blue lights. Sayonara, the land of beauty, captivated the hearts and minds of those present and wrapped in an evening of fun and warmth that will be remembered throughout the years. The win gave the Bengals their first Conference championship since the 1946 team turned the trick. Although trailing by at least two and as many as eleven, the Tigers came back to take the contest with a 19-point fourth period. Doug Baker made the four points to give the Tigers a 42-38 lead, Walt Zimmerman sunk the clincher from the free throw line with three seconds remaining. Bob Brase tied the score at 36-36 and 38-38 with two jump shots, and John Bolle turned the tide toward the Tigers with a three point play that made the score 43-40. AUBUCHON OIL CO.
