In carrying out this theme we have attempted to convey a feeling rather than to treat the theme in the conventional manner. FESTUS TAKES PRIDE IN DISPLAYING ITS MANY TROPHIES 3 BUSES ARE IN CONSTANT USE AT FHS Transportation to school is varied — students use bikes, drive cars, ride buses and even a few motor scooters. Approximately 250 students ride the bus to school, to the lunch room at the grade school and back home. Even Mr. Tynes is driving a new station wagon purchased by the Board of Education. 6 THE BOARD OF EDUCATION IS THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE SCHOOL Mr. Charles Vogt, Treasurer; Mr. Harry Long, President; Mr. Harry Weier, Vice-President; Mr. W. It has published a booklet called Rules and Regulations” which governs its decisions and facilitates its work. This book states specifically the qualifications and duties required of teachers and administrators, the requirements for admission of students, the rules which govern their attendance and conduct, their policies toward all matters which come under their jurisdiction. 7 DIGNITARIES TEACH AS WELL AS DIRECT RALPH B. TYNES Superintendent of Schools B.S. in Education, Warrensburg State College; M.Ed., University of Missouri; Post Graduate Work, Washington University. Mr. Tynes instructs the 8:00 Geography class. MRS. SARA WOOD Secretary to Mr. Tynes ROBERT L. SHOUSH Principal B.S. in Education, Kirksville State College; M.A., Kirksville State College. Mr. Shoush teaches one of the Algebra classes. 8 ACTIVITIES OUTSTANDING STUDENTS ARE HONORED William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri was the scene of Girls' State, while Warrensburg was the scene of Boys’ State. These camps were held for a week last summer to promote citizenship among high school students. Two girls were sent to Fulton and three boys to Warrensburg. Each month an outstanding Senior, chosen by the faculty of Festus High, is a guest of the Festus-Crystal City Rotary Club. This club meets every Tuesday. Fifth Row: Mr. Moore, Bryant Albaugh, Lloyd Collins, Tracy Jackson. The Festus High School Band under the direction of Mr. Heuby Moore enjoyed its 25th anniversary during 1959-60. From an orchestra of 40 organized in 1935 and from the first band of 36 in 1936, it has grown to 78 this year. They provided two enjoyable concerts held in the spring and fall. In addition they entertained between halves at school games and marched in the annual Festus and DeSoto Christmas parades. Also our marching band appeared at Band Day in Columbia and homecoming ceremonies at Cape Girardeau. Last year at the District Contest held in Cape Girardeau they received a one-rating. The coveted one-rating was also awarded them at the State Contest held at the University of Missouri. The received a 1 rating at Cape. Festus High Girls Glee Club is composed of fifty-five talented girls under the direction of Miss Virginia Atwell. Last year they earned a one rating at both Columbia and Cape Giradeau. They will again participate in the annual music festival at Cape Giradeau and if they merit a one rating they will enter State Contest at the University of Missouri. This will be the last contest held for large groups at Columbia. They sponsor the annual tour of Industrial plants in St. Louis and in the County. An Open House is held each year to present their work to the public. It is under the direction of Mr. Dugan. SPANISH CLUB PIN POINTS SPANISH CULTURE The Spanish Club is under the direction of Mrs. Manley and consists of twenty-seven Spanish students. Their meetings are held every other Friday during Spanish Class. They sponsored a Pep Assembly and a Pep Week this year. Our planned progress team was divided into five committees. Each was concerned with putting the city’s land to use for the community. Mike McNeil headed the streets committee. Deanna Akins, Vic Uding, and Marty Gebhart served on this committee. Paul Ogle, Carol Drury, and Ron Politte worked with Glen Wright’s Recreation Committee. Mildred Lovelace was chairman over the Industry committee with Paul DeClue, John Siebert and Ellen Porter as helpers. School problems were tackled by Neal McCreary and his committee consisting of Harry Shapiro, Randy LeGrand and Carol Cage. Carol Abenathy was head of the Sanitation Committee. Her workers were Pam Thomure, Dave McClain, and Phil Gove-ro. Each committee submitted his solutions at the County Planned Progress meeting held at the Festus Elementary School in Hartshorn Acres. GLEN WRIGHT Student Council President 24 One of many Student Council projects was the Community Chest Drive. ON CHALLENGING PROBLEMS AND PROJECTS The Student Council of Festus High School is an excellent representative factor of the student body. It actively participates in drives for the improvement of the school, community, and country. Representatives for the student government are chosen by the student body on the basis of their scholastic record, citizenship, and leadership. The young leaders take on many responsibilities when they are elected to Student Council. Each member is chairman or co-chairman of one of the many committees sponsored by the council. These committees are Social and Recreational, Election, Education, Safety, Awards and Ethics, Service, Buildings and Grounds, and Assembly. The Indian Assembly sponsored by Student Council.
