CLASS HISTORY In September, 1952, 105 eager freshmen entered Festus High School. Our first job was to elect the officers who were to lead our class along the troublesome road of being freshmen. Under the supervision of Mrs. Helen Morris and Miss Lucile Holmes, we chose as president, Arley Vest; vice president, Bill Jackson; secretary, Florence Klien; and treasurer, Larry Boyer. We managed to struggle bravely through initiation; with skinned noses and bruised knees we arose full-fledged F.H.S. students. Our social event for that year was the St. Patrick’s Dance. We decorated the gym in green and white colors, and the music was furnished by the “Horneteers.” It was a very successful social event. We were very proud to have Joan Brunkhorst from our class as an atten-ant in the Football Crowning, and Mary Katherine Lucas as an attendant in the Basketball Sweetheart Crowning. In 1953, 109 sophomores returned to school. Our officers that year were Bill Rigdon, president; Donald Smith, vice-president; Dale Santschi, Secretary; Joan Brunkhorst, treasurer; and Phyllis Perry, reporter. After initiating the freshmen, we set to work on the Harvest Dance. On October 2, we had the first all school dance of the year and for the first time it was semi-formal. We decorated the gym with Halloween colors; the band for the evening was the “Noveltones.” We were very proud to have from our class Larry Propst, Jerry Uding, Don Burns, Dale Santschi, Larry Boyer, and Bill Rigdon on the outstanding baseball team of F.H.S. in 1953. Chosen as cheerleaders from the sophomore class were Mary Lucas and Connie Scott; Florence Klien was chosen treasurer of G.A.A., and Roxie Lsbert and Gerry Son were selected to be twirlers. Phyllis Perry, escorted by Bernard Pratt, was the sophomore attendant in the Carnival Crowning. From our class came the Basketball Sweetheart, Rae Leon, escorted by Watson Akins. Members of the Student Council were; Tom Lovelace, Bill Jackson, Joan Brunkhorst, and Donald Smith. In September, 1954, we returned to F.H.S. with our enrollment as juniors dowTn to 102. Under the supervision of our sponsors. Miss Holmes, Mrs. Hammon, Mr. McFerron, Mr. Parker, and Mr. Clippard. we elected as class officers: president. Bill Rigdon; vice-president, Arley Vest; secretary, Florence Klien; and treasurer, Dale Santschi. Those chosen to represent the class in the Student Council were Donna Renfro, Don Smith, Paul Speidel, and Arley Vest. We were very proud to have had Eugene Juncker and Donald Smith receive honors for their essays which were published in THE AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL ANTHOLOGY OF ESSAYS, and to have had Dan Terry re- ceive first place in Jefferson County in the “I Speak for Democracy” contest. Connie Scott was crowned the Athletic Sweetheart, and those who were voted by the student body into Who’s Who were; Dqn Smith, Connie Scott, and Bill Jackson. This year the Junior - Senior Prom was held in the new school in Hartshorn Acres. The theme of the Mardi Gras was carried out very well by the decoration. Sending out with some smOoth music was once again Herb Mahler and his orchestra. The banquet, prepared by the Junior Mothers, was served in the hall at 12:00 midnight on tables beautifully decorated with floral centerpieces and candles. The majority of our class took part in the many varied activities at F.H.S.; as the year ended we realized, with mixed emotions, that our high school days were fast drawing to a close. In September, 1955, we entered the halls of Festus High School with 97 students taking their seats in the senior section. We felt that at last we had reached our long awaited goal — that of being seniors. We now would begin to shoulder the true responsibility of being adults. Our sponsors were Mr. Campbell and Mrs. Hinkle. Our class officers were: president, Bill Rigdon; vice-president, Dan Terry; secretary-treasurer, Jo Ann Wilson; historian, Elizabeth Brown; and reporter, Sue Fast. The business managers were Sharron Reecht, Donna Renfro, Don Smith, and Kenneth Evans, and Arley Vest was elected Student Council President. The senior carnival was a big success for us and there were the usual stands. Our float won first prize in the float contest and the senior candidate, Donna Renfro, was crowned Carnival Queen. Joyce Loesch was voted Tiger Queen and Don Smith was voted Tiger King. Wanda Hoffman won the Betty Crocker Award sponsored by the Home Economics department. The Christmas Dance was the last dance ever to be sponsored by us in F.H.S. The gym was transformed into a fairyland skating pond of glistening ice and snow. The ceiling was formed by hundreds of snowflakes dangling in the air and the walls were painted with scenes of skaters and sleigh riders. The evening was enjoyed very much by everyone, and the climax came when Anita Vachalek was crowned the Athletic Queen. The crowning was different this year in that the Tiger chose his own queen from the group of attendants. The senior attendants were Florence Klien, and Joyce Loesch. The fourth and last chapter drew to a close as the senior class walked the last path of their high school career, a moment of mixed sadness and pride, to the speaker’s stand to receive their diplomas. We will always treasure the happy memories of days spent in Festus High School and eagerly anticipate our first class reunion.
