7 VOLUME 29 FOREWORD The 1956 Tiger has attempted to portray the various activities of Festus High School as seen through the eye of a camera. We have shown how the students and faculty live and work together. The staff has chosen the Tiger to use in the annual because it symbolizes so well the spirit of our school as shown in our many activities and is the emblem of our Alma Mater. FESTUS HIGH SCHOOL ALMA MATER Festus High our Alma Mater Pleasant memories ne’er forgot, Heaven and Earth thy sons and daughters Will thy blessings be. And ere the setting sun shall vanish All the. glory is thy lot. Love and loyalty forever Is our pledge to thee. DEDICATION The fostering of good sportsmanship has always come first with Coach Godwin who has devoted the past 7 years to the development of football at F. H. S. He was the first full-time football coach, coming to Festus during its 3rd year of football. Coach Godwin has had winning teams and losing teams. In 1949 Festus won every game and was invited to play Sikeston in the Polio Bowl. But whether losing or winning he has always aimed first to develop men into good sportsmen. To our friend and coach we respectfully dedicate this 29th volume of the TIGER. TOM WORTMAN CLASS HISTORY In September, 1952, 105 eager freshmen entered Festus High School. Our first job was to elect the officers who were to lead our class along the troublesome road of being freshmen. Under the supervision of Mrs. Helen Morris and Miss Lucile Holmes, we chose as president, Arley Vest; vice president, Bill Jackson; secretary, Florence Klien; and treasurer, Larry Boyer. We managed to struggle bravely through initiation; with skinned noses and bruised knees we arose full-fledged F.H.S. students. Our social event for that year was the St. Patrick’s Dance. We decorated the gym in green and white colors, and the music was furnished by the “Horneteers.” It was a very successful social event. We were very proud to have Joan Brunkhorst from our class as an atten-ant in the Football Crowning, and Mary Katherine Lucas as an attendant in the Basketball Sweetheart Crowning. In 1953, 109 sophomores returned to school. Our officers that year were Bill Rigdon, president; Donald Smith, vice-president; Dale Santschi, Secretary; Joan Brunkhorst, treasurer; and Phyllis Perry, reporter. After initiating the freshmen, we set to work on the Harvest Dance. On October 2, we had the first all school dance of the year and for the first time it was semi-formal. We decorated the gym with Halloween colors; the band for the evening was the “Noveltones.” We were very proud to have from our class Larry Propst, Jerry Uding, Don Burns, Dale Santschi, Larry Boyer, and Bill Rigdon on the outstanding baseball team of F.H.S. in 1953. Chosen as cheerleaders from the sophomore class were Mary Lucas and Connie Scott; Florence Klien was chosen treasurer of G.A.A., and Roxie Lsbert and Gerry Son were selected to be twirlers. Phyllis Perry, escorted by Bernard Pratt, was the sophomore attendant in the Carnival Crowning. From our class came the Basketball Sweetheart, Rae Leon, escorted by Watson Akins. Members of the Student Council were; Tom Lovelace, Bill Jackson, Joan Brunkhorst, and Donald Smith. In September, 1954, we returned to F.H.S. with our enrollment as juniors dowTn to 102. Under the supervision of our sponsors. Miss Holmes, Mrs. Hammon, Mr. McFerron, Mr. Parker, and Mr. Clippard. we elected as class officers: president. Bill Rigdon; vice-president, Arley Vest; secretary, Florence Klien; and treasurer, Dale Santschi. Those chosen to represent the class in the Student Council were Donna Renfro, Don Smith, Paul Speidel, and Arley Vest. We were very proud to have had Eugene Juncker and Donald Smith receive honors for their essays which were published in THE AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL ANTHOLOGY OF ESSAYS, and to have had Dan Terry re- ceive first place in Jefferson County in the “I Speak for Democracy” contest. Connie Scott was crowned the Athletic Sweetheart, and those who were voted by the student body into Who’s Who were; Dqn Smith, Connie Scott, and Bill Jackson. This year the Junior - Senior Prom was held in the new school in Hartshorn Acres. The theme of the Mardi Gras was carried out very well by the decoration. Sending out with some smOoth music was once again Herb Mahler and his orchestra. The banquet, prepared by the Junior Mothers, was served in the hall at 12:00 midnight on tables beautifully decorated with floral centerpieces and candles. The majority of our class took part in the many varied activities at F.H.S.; as the year ended we realized, with mixed emotions, that our high school days were fast drawing to a close. In September, 1955, we entered the halls of Festus High School with 97 students taking their seats in the senior section. We felt that at last we had reached our long awaited goal — that of being seniors. We now would begin to shoulder the true responsibility of being adults. Our sponsors were Mr. Campbell and Mrs. Hinkle. Our class officers were: president, Bill Rigdon; vice-president, Dan Terry; secretary-treasurer, Jo Ann Wilson; historian, Elizabeth Brown; and reporter, Sue Fast. The business managers were Sharron Reecht, Donna Renfro, Don Smith, and Kenneth Evans, and Arley Vest was elected Student Council President. The senior carnival was a big success for us and there were the usual stands. Our float won first prize in the float contest and the senior candidate, Donna Renfro, was crowned Carnival Queen. Joyce Loesch was voted Tiger Queen and Don Smith was voted Tiger King. Wanda Hoffman won the Betty Crocker Award sponsored by the Home Economics department. The Christmas Dance was the last dance ever to be sponsored by us in F.H.S. The gym was transformed into a fairyland skating pond of glistening ice and snow. The ceiling was formed by hundreds of snowflakes dangling in the air and the walls were painted with scenes of skaters and sleigh riders. The evening was enjoyed very much by everyone, and the climax came when Anita Vachalek was crowned the Athletic Queen. The crowning was different this year in that the Tiger chose his own queen from the group of attendants. The senior attendants were Florence Klien, and Joyce Loesch. The fourth and last chapter drew to a close as the senior class walked the last path of their high school career, a moment of mixed sadness and pride, to the speaker’s stand to receive their diplomas. We will always treasure the happy memories of days spent in Festus High School and eagerly anticipate our first class reunion. Festus placed first in the district which consisted of four counties. We won $500 to be used as the class chooses. The project was carried out by the Sociology class under the direction of Mrs. Dreyer. Other faculty advisors were Mrs. Holligan, Mrs. Manley, and Miss Gasper. The projects chosen were: 1. A new high school. 2. A twin-city map and directory. The class conducted surveys, distributed and tallied questionaires, drew maps, collected specific material to be used in the directory, planned drives for band issues, and interviewed prominent citizens. The students gained much first hand knowledge of city problems and activities which will help them to be better citizens of their community. The purpose of the Cooperative Occupational program is to provide practical experience on actual jobs to those students who have chosen the occupation they wish to follow after graduation. The success of this program is measured by the number of students remaining in the occupation, or a closely allied occupation, in which they received their training. A good majority of former students are now in occupations in which they have received this instruction. The principal activity of the group was the sixth annual Employee-Employer Banquet. Employers were the guests of the students; the high school faculty and the board of education members were invited to attend. This race for Queen was one of the most spirited in years. A silver medallion was presented to the girl who was in the lead each day. Betty Basler, Freshman, was '‘Queen for the day” on Monday; Sondra Tesreau, the Sophomore choice for Queen, brought in the largest amount of money on Tuesday; While Jane Mitchell, the Junior candidate, reigned as Queen for the Day both on Wednesday and Friday; The Senior representative, Donna Renfro, wore the “Queen of the day” locket on Thursday. ATHLETIC CROWNING OUR TIGER A world of snowflakes, blue lights, and Christmas trees formed the background for the Athletic Crowning held during the annual Christmas Dance sponsored by the seniors. This was the second year in which an athletic queen was crowned. Previously there were basketball and football queens. The crowning was highlighted by a Grand March by all athletes and their dates. The players of the four different sports of Festus High presented their maids with unusual gold and black chrysanthemum corsages. The candidates followed the Grand March up the “Royal Road” to the throne. They were: Babe Buehler, a junior, whose escort was Wyman Richardson; Judy Schembre, a junior, escorted by Jerry Vinyard; Florence Klein, a senior, escorted by Bill Keevins; Carolyn Dreyer, a junior, escorted by Paul Speidel; Linda Neel, a sophomore, her escort was Dale Santschi; Joyce Loesch, a senior, escorted by Dan Terry; Anita Vachalek, a senior, escorted by Donald Smith. Our tiger, (Bill Abel), presented the bouquets. Pink carnations were presented to the maids and a bouquet of white carnations, centered with an orchid to the queen. Excitement mounted while all the pink bouquets were given first. Anita Vachalek received the queen’s bouquet and a gold chain with emblems of each sport represented.
