We were now true Green Freshmen. Shirley Billings and Homer Leftridge were chosen from our class as candidates for the Carnival Crowning. The Freshman candidate for the Football Crowning was Barbara Statler. Pearl Sims was the candidate for the Basketball Crowning. Chosen as Cheerleaders from the Freshman class were: Bonnie King, Marilyn Wilson, Beverly Gendron, Delores Thompson and Marlene Riley. The Freshmen sponsored the Valentine Dance according to custom. In September, 1951, again 133 students entered school, not as Green Freshmen but as full fledged Sophomores. Chosen as our president was Carma Rigdon, vice-president was Bonnie King, secretary and treasurer was Audrey Rigdon. Our sponsors were Murrell Godwin, Leo Behrens and James Seyer. As Sophomore candidate for Carnival Queen, Sue Johnson was chosen and as her escort she chose John Skaggs. Pearl Sims was attendant for the Basketball Crowning. We were proud to have from our class Sue Morris and Tuggy Abernathy named in Who’s Who in F.H.S. Football boys who lettered this year were Cecil Vaughn, Phil Meyers, Sonny Akins and Kenneth Kast. Basketball boys who lettered this year were Sonny Akins and Bill Koehler. Kenneth Kast was the only Sophomore who lettered in track. By popular vote of the class Ronnie Buehler was elected to represent Festus at the Sophomore Pilgrimage to Jefferson City. The next fall we came back as 109 Juniors, weighted with the two responsibilities of assuming the dignity which befits upperclassmen and putting across the biggest social event of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom. As Juniors we had learned by now Roberts were chosen as candidates for the Football Crowning. This year we were proud to have from our class the Basketball Sweetheart, Norma Aubu-chon. Carla Cockerham was chosen from our class to be one of the twirlers. Those receiving one rating at Cape were: Carma Rigdon on her alto saxaphone solo and Andy Bayer in the brass quintet. The election was held for the first Student Council president. Lloyd Brunkhorst, Andy Bayer and Dwayne James were the members from our class who were running for president. After vigorous campaigning by all candidates and their colleagues Lloyd Brunkhorst was elected president. The next week the Junior Student Council members were elected. They were Watson Akins, Andy Bayer, Dwayne James and Bea McCormack. One of the most coveted honors is that of being chosen as representative to Girls’ State and Boys’ State. Mary Pratt went to Girls’ State at William Wood College at Fulton, Lloyd Brunkhorst and Andy Bayer attended Boys’ State at Central Missouri State College at Warrensburg. The grand climax of the year’s social activities, the annual Junior-Senior Prom, was held on Friday, May 1. This year as usual the prom was an open one and a large number of outside guests were invited by the students. Members of the school board and faculty members were also present. As the students and guests were introduced and greeted by both faculty and students they entered the ballroom and were greeted by the strains of heavenly music from Herb Mahler’s orchestra. The gym, for this very important night, had been transformed into April in Paris. Yellow paneled walls were decorated with French girls in short black skirts. Guests were served by waitresses attired in similar costumes. The scene was a street cafe in Paris. It was beautiful in all the yellow and green paper which adorned the ballroom. Once again the prom and banquet were combined and guests made their way to the dining room, where the Junior Mothers Club served a wonderful meal. Yellow spring flowers and candles decorated the tables and other decorations carried out the yellow color scheme chosen for the prom. The 53-54 school term started with the Senior class attending 104 strong. The Senior sponsors were Mrs. Helen Morris and Mr. Warren Elkins. The first week of school was an important one for the Seniors, because it held two important events. The first of these was the Senior Mothers’ annual fall style show. The second was the election of class officers on Friday, September 11. The Seniors chose Norman Abernathy, president; Andy Bayer, vice-president; Agnes Portell, secretary; Rhea Matthews, treasurer; John Isenman, business manager; Beverly Gendron, reporter; and Mary Ellen Roberts, historian. The Seniors’ first money raising operation of the year was the annual magazine sale contest sponsored by the Curtis Publishing Company. The Seniors sold more magazine subscriptions than all three underclasses, with the combined sales amounting to $168.50. October was the Seniors’ busy month. They received their rings the first week and soon the girls from F.H.S. and the surrounding schools recovered from the shock of receiving a Senior boy’s ring. The class went into preparations for its annual Carnival, which was held Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24. Some of the Carnival’s best productions were: Majoress Bow-Wow’s Amateur Show, the Tom Thumb Wedding, the Melodrama, which was cast entirely of Seniors from the speech class, the Auction, and the Carnival Queen’s Crowning. Miss Mary Pratt, Senior queen candidate, was chosen Carnival Queen. Her escort was John Skaggs and she was crowned queen by Norman Abernathy, Senior president. The class did very well with this year’s carnival, clearing almost $900. The last big money making activity of the Senior class was the Christmas card sale. Everybody in the class worked hard to make the sale a success and we made around $450. The Senior pictures arrived on December 17 to get everybody in the Christmas spirit. The follow- ing night the Seniors presented the annual Christmas dance. The theme of the dance was “Winter Wonderland,” and music was supplied by the Novel-tones. To top the evening Bonnie King was crowned Football Queen by Co-Captain Larry Nanney. Senior attendants were Beverly Gendron and Sue Morris, escorted by Lloyd Brunkhorst and Sonny Akins. The four other Senior escorts were Co-Captain Kenneth Kast, John Skaggs, Phil Meyers and Tom Uding. The new year saw the Seniors busy. The crowning took place at the annual Spring Band Concert on Friday evening, March 19. On Friday, March 26, F.H.S. took part in the music contest at Cape. Many Seniors participated in singing and playing in the various vocal groups and instrumental groups. Lloyd Brunkhorst, this year’s student body president, next year’s president, and the runner-up in the election, represented our Student Council on April 15 and 16 at Maryville. The Juniors did a fine job of presenting the Junior-Senior Prom this year. They chose “The Gypsy” as their theme. Herb Mahler’s band played. At twelve o’clock everybody went to the study hall where they served a very fine meal. The prom ended about one o’clock and everyone left after having a very enjoyable evening. Then came Senior Week. The Seniors enjoyed a week’s vacation while the underclassmen sat and worried whether they would pass their finals. Senior Trip to Deep South On Sunday morning, May 23, the Seniors of Festus, with their sponsors and chaperones, will leave by bus from the high school at 8:00 a.m. They will proceed to Union Station, St. Louis, where they will board an Illinois Central streamliner train for New Orleans. Junior Class History As we begin our adult lives, the book of time opens on the first chapter: Freshman Year. In the fall of 1951, with shaking knees and wondering stares, 111 freshmen embarked on the adventures of “high school.” Soon afterward we were issued locker keys and books, both of which we promptly lost. Gradually some of the green began to rub off and we began to assert ourselves as a class. For our leadership we chose Lonnie Boyd as president, Monte Klein as vice-president, Harriet Walker as secretary, and Charles Lashley as treasurer. Mrs. Dreyer, Mr. Clippard and Mrs. Manley were our sponsors. By popular vote of the class, Lorraine Smith was chosen as candidate for Carnival Queen. We were thrilled to have one of our number, Yvonne Abernathy, as Freshman attendant to the Basketball Queen. The Valentine Dance, a customary undertaking of the Freshman class, was a success. Chapter 2 began on a wonderful September morning when 106 triumphant students returned to the halls of F.H.S. to assume their new roles of Sophomores. This proud class, which had just come through the perils of freshman year, elected to guide them to even greater success, Bob Rigdon, president, Hersel Nokes, vice-president, Donna Buehler, secretary, and Jean Stauss, treasurer. This year we chose Mary Lou Hitt as Sophomore candidate for Carnival Queen. Instead of the annual freshman-sophomore party we gave an all-school dance, the Harvest Dance. Yvonne Abernathy was the lucky one to be attendant to the Football Queen. Mary Lou Hitt was sophomore attendant for Basketball Queen. We sent Lonnie Boyd to represent Festus at the Sophomore Pilgrimage to Jefferson City. Our sponsors were Mr. Parker, Mr. Walker, Mrs. Kingery, and Mr. Clippard. Chapter 3, Junior Year: At last, upper classmen! Ninety-six jubilant juniors returned to travel the halls of F.H.S. for the third year. We had one thought uppermost in our minds, the PROM. To make this big job a success we needed good leaders. We chose Bob Rigdon as president and Donna Buehler as secretary once again, and also we chose Lonnie Boyd as treasurer, and as business managers, Jean Stauss, Charles Lashley, Allen McCreary and Colette Colbert. Amid the coming preparations for the Senior Carnival we selected Jackie Gehrs to be our candidate for Carnival Queen. One good thing just naturally followed another and two of our classmates, Rose Bourisaw and Yvonne Abernathy, were selected as baton twirlers. Donna Rhineberger, who had been a twirler for two years, was chosen majorette. After a wonderful season the football squad chose Yvonne Abernathy as attendant to their queen and the basketball boys selected Fay Jarvis as their attendant to the Basketball Sweetheart. This, year four of our number, Donna Rhineberger, Allen McCreary, Nancy Wilson, and Colette Colbert, were named in the Who’s Who listing of F.H.S. After months of hard work and planning we gave the Prom. The theme this year was a “Gypsy Camp.” The auditorium was transformed into a delightful “camp” for one evening. The couples danced to the music of Herb Mahler’s orchestra. Sophomore waitresses wore gay peasant skirts and blouses. The orchestra was housed by a “tent” of bright spangled yellow. At midnight the Junior Mothers served a banquet for the guests. Donna Buehler served as our representative to Girl’s State. The book of time is incomplete. A chapter is missing. Senior year. What it will hold in store for each of us we cannot tell. We hope for a very successful year. Junior-Senior Prom The highlight of the Festus High social season, the annual Junior-Senior Prom, was held on May 7th. Once again it was an open prom and a large number of outside guests were invited by the students. Members of the school board and faculty were also present. As the students and guests entered the building they were greeted by a gypsy fortune-teller. After having secrets of the future revealed to them the students entered into the gym, which for the evening was transformed into a mythical “Gypsy Camp.” Under a starlit sky the guests danced to the strains of Herb Mahler’s orchestra, an old favorite of F.H.S. The band stand was covered by a spangled yellow canopy with a campfire casting a warm glow upon it. Over the edge of the canopy a huge glittering moon rose to shine down upon the green hills which rose surrounding the camp. The tables were covered with white tablecloths decorated with gay gypsy colors. Cokes were served from the rear of a covered wagon. The dance programs were white with a gypsy on the cover. At the stroke of midnight a romantic candlelight supper was served in the study hall. The study hall tables were decorated to carry out the theme with candles and bright flowers gathered from the hills surrounding the “Gypsy Camp.” The arrangements and decorations for the prom were ably planned and carried out by the members of the Junior Class under the direction of Mrs. Jean Kingery and Mrs. Genevieve Holligan. o u R SOPHOmORSS Pak Seatschi sec. Sophomore History In September, 1952, 105 freshmen entered Festus High School. Their first job was to elect their class officers. Under the supervision of their sponsors, Mrs. Helen Morris and Miss Lucile Holmes, they elected Arley Vest as their president. Other officers were Bill Jackson, vice president; Florence Klein, secretary; and Larry Boyer, treasurer. They struggled through initiation bravely and became full-fledged F.H.S. students. Their social event this year was the St. Patrick Dance. The gym was decorated in traditional St. Patrick’s colors, green and white, and music was furnished by the “Horneteers.” It was a very successful event. In 1953, 109 sophomores returned to school. Their officers this year were Bill Rigdon, president; Donald Smith, vice-president; Dale Santschi, secretary; Joan Brunkhorst, treasurer; and Phyllis Perry, reporter. After initiating the new freshmen, they set to work on the Harvest Dance. On October 2 they held the first all school dance of the year. This year, for the first time, it was semi-formal. The gym was decorated with Halloween colors, with a solid ceiling of interlaced black and orange crepe paper, while the walls were filled with drawings of tombstones and pumpkins. Over the auditorium was suspended a bright orange moon. The band for the evening was the popular “Noveltones,” who gave out with their smooth music from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. Everyone enjoyed a good time. The sophomores had a good representation in the various organizations this year. Many sophomore boys went out for sports, and the “B” team basketball, which was made up mostly of sophomore boys, had a fairly successful season. Members of the Student Council were: Tom Lovelace, Bill Jackson, Joan Brunkhorst and Donald Smith. IDTRODUCinG our FResHrnsn Catoi Cfcnra vice- mss. They elected class officers soon after school opened. They were: Roy Leftridge, president; Carol Nanney, vice-president; Carol Winkler, secretary and treasurer. Also elected were two representatives from their class for the Student Council. These were Carolyn Dreyer and Diane Hartman. Now they fearfully but bravely awaited Initiation Day. But they found that it wasn’t terrible—only lots of fun. After Initiation Day they settled down to study and assume their responsibilities as dignified Freshmen. On March 12 they gave the annual St. Patrick’s Day Dance, which was an all-school dance. The gym was cleverly decorated with green and white Shamrocks. Basketball Sweetheart Crowning The coronation of the Basketball Sweetheart took place on February 16, 1954. As is traditional, she was crowned between games at the final home game. First to ascend to the stage was Miss Norma Aubuchon, who was retiring Basketball Sweetheart, escorted by Charles Bauman. Next was Carol Nanney, freshman, who was escorted by John Skaggs. Mary Katherine Lucas, sophomore, and her escort, Bob Henson, followed. Next came Faye Jarvis, escorted by Bob Ogle, followed by Shirley Schweigert, senior attendant, and her escort, Watson Akins. Last and least, in stature, came Bobbie Jo Leon and Michael Holligan, tiny attendants. At last came the moment all were waiting for—the crowning of 1954’s Basketball Sweetheart. Beverly Gendron then announced that Etta Leon had been chosen by the 1954 basketball squad as its Sweetheart. Watson Akins presented Etta with the gold basketball and the traditional kiss given to each Basketball Sweetheart. Following this ceremony all honored the queen by rising and singing the Sweetheart Song, which was accompanied by the Pep Band. A recessional completed the very impressive coronation ceremony. Babe Buehler, with Wayne Gendron as her escort. Each girl selected her own escort. The voting was close until the very end, but in the final counting at 10 o’clock Saturday evening the senior candidate, Mary Pratt, came out victorious. The queen was crowned by Norman Abernathy, senior class president. She was crowned with a white crown trimmed with rhinestones. Mary was also presented with a lovely engraved locket as a remembrance of the memorable occasion. 1953 Football Crowning Amid a setting of snowy cedar and lights, the annual Football Crowning was held during the intermission of the Christmas dance. The former Miss Joan Cook, retiring queen, was escorted to her throne by Kenny Kast, co-captain. The Senior attendants, Sue Morris and Beverly Gendron, were escorted by Sonny Akins and Lloyd Brunkhorst, respectively. John Skaggs escorted Yvonne Abernathy, the Junior attendant. Rae Leon, escorted by Tom Uding, was the Sophomore attendant. Babe Buehler was the Freshman attendant and was escorted by Philip Meyer. The crown and locket bearers were Myra Ann Elkins and Jimmy Litton. Finally—the football queen of 1953! Miss Bonnie King, Senior, escorted by Co-Captain Larry Nanney. Larry bestowed the crown and traditional kiss upon the radiant queen. The audience applauded each couple as they descended from the stage in the recessional.
