enior flax .History The 79 freshmen who entered school in 1947 were a typical freshman class. They were re- ceived into school with the usual comments of poor kids and green freshiesf' They were also typical of any other freshman class in the respect of initiation. The sophomores really gave it to them. They recovered in time to decorate for the Valentine dance of that year, and the dance turned out to be a nice affair. For their first year of high school they elected Jack Brase as president, Ivan Bridwell as vice- president, Betty Berkbigler as secretary, Shirley Martin as treasurer, and Richard Lea as ser- geant-at-arms to guide them through their trials and tribulations. There must have been many, for during the year nine freshmen left us to depart for places unknown. Our class returned to school in 1948 as sophomores, as wise as any sophomore class that ever entered the doors of F.H.S. This year it was our tum to do the initiating and we gave just as much as we had got the year before. It was up to us this year to do the decorating for the harvest dance, and the com- mittee did a fine job. We had a nice dance, breaking even on the financial side of the af- fair. This, also, was the year that the students made a good name for themselves. During a drive for the Polio Fund the sophomores were behind when the drive was about over. One night a group of the kids got together and went around to peoples' houses offering to put rock salt on their snow-covered sidewalks in return for contributions to the Polio Fund. The people contributed generously to make the drive a big success. This class was spearheaded by the leadership of Byron Santschi as presi- dent, Betty Strother was vice-president, Carol Jenni was secretary, Willis Blttlcks, treasurer, and Shirley Lashley, reporter. The first thing we juniors of 1949-50 did was to choose Betty Strother as our president: Earl Grieshaber, vice-president: Betty Berkbigler, business manager: Betty Rhineberger secre- tary: and Ivan Bridwell, reporter. This year, for the benefit of the school, our class put on an almost pantomime play called And the Lamp Went Out. It was a very funny play that everyone really enjoyed. Georgeann Hur- ley was the backstage speaker and the actors included Ivan Bridwell, Carol Jenni, and Bill McCaleb. The juniors really enjoyed putting on this little show. This was the year that Jack Brase was recognized as the leading high school pointmaker in football in the entire state. Jack totaled 131 points while playing quarterback. The team piled up a record of eight wins and no losses this year, being scored upon only once, and in the final game of the regular season against Crystal City. Be- cause of their splendid record they were in- vited to play the unbeaten Sikeston Bulldogs in the Polio Bowl in Charleston, Missouri. Here they were defeated by the score of 14 to 0. We juniors, as all other juniors before us, had the privilege this year of decorating for the Junior-Senior Prom. After much controversy we selected a circus background with a tent- roof effect overhead. The buffet supper was held in the study hall with the Junior Mothers Club serving the guests. Herb Mahler and his orchestra played for the prom. The dance was tabbed a success, and everyone agreed readily. Our senior year a total of 54 students en- rolled for their last year at F.H.S. They began by electing Byron Santschi as president for the third time in flve'years. He was president of his eighth grade class. Homer Richardson was vice-president: Betty Rhineberger, secretary: Betty Berkbigler, treasurer: Bill McCaleb, busi- ness manager: Betty Strother, reporter: and Jerry Jacobs, historian. Byron quickly got the class rolling. We began working on prepara- tions for the senior camival. The camival ran two nights, featuring a minstrel show, a melo- drama, a Ferris wheel, numerous side shows, dart throws, ball throwing, and other attrac- tions, not to mention refreshments. The second night, at 10:00 o'clock, an auction was held, at which articles brought by the student body and donated by Festus and Crystal City mer- chants, were sold to the highest bidder. Many fine articles were sold at very low cost. During this final night of the carnival, Homer Richard- son and Betty Strother were crowned Carnival King and Queen. Attendants to the crowning, and their escorts were, junior candidates: Shir- ley Hurst and Bill North: sophomore candi- dates: Helen Murphy and Garland Strother: freshman candidates: Shirley Billings and Homer Leftridge. All in all, the carnival was a huge success, netting more money than any senior carnival previously. This year the foot- ball team had another good season, although not quite as spectacular as the year before, winning six and losing two. The losses were suffered at the hands of the Farmington Knights and the Crystal City Homets. Co-cap- tains of the team were Earl Grieshaber and Bob Hill. Pat Pratt, senior, was selected by the team to be their queen. The basketball team had a record of 16 wins and 8 losses this year and won three trophies, a second place Christmas tournament trophy, a third place Desloge tournament tro- phy, and a second place Class A Regional tournament trophy. In each of these instances Festus was beaten out by Crystal City. Co-cap- tains for the team were Jack Brase and Jack Buren. Carol Perry was chosen basketball sweetheart. The seniors had a tough time doing it, but managed to get their class rings by Christmas. They were also happy about having all the trip money before Christmas, which was the first time any senior class of F.H.S. had been able to accomplish this feat. We seniors look back on the past four years with a feeling that somewhere along the line friend- ships have been established and traditions set, which a whole world could not sway. It is with a feeling of regret, mixed with just pride, that we graduate from Festus High School.
