Text from Pages 1 - 110 of the 1949 volume:

w jG THE pR£S£f 1949 TIGER The Tiger which adorns the introductory page is a replica of the one which appeared on the cover of the March, 1944, issue of Field and Stream Magazine. Upon seeing the cover, we immediately decided that this would be an excellent frontispiece for our yearbook and wrote to the artist asking for permission to use her drawing. The following is the reply which we received from the artist: Flushing, New York March 10, 1949 Mrs. Charles Dreyer Festus High School Festus, Missouri Dear Mrs. Dreyer: Thank you for your very nice letter of March 2nd. It is with the greatest pleasure I give permission to use him in your yearbook. I hope he behaves and will be a good scholar. Would it be possible for me to have a copy of ' The Tiger? He has been very popular all over the United States and was even used in Belgium on the sides of the B-25's and on the backs of the boys' flying jackets. Thought your students might be interested in his background, since his birthday is March, 1944. Have enclosed one of my leaflets. As you see, I still use him as a signature myself. Success to you, the students of Festus High School, and The Tiger. Kindest regards. 'For we are all, like swimmers in the sea, Poised on the top of a huge wave of fate. Which hangs uncertain to which side to fall. And whether it will heave us up to land, Or whether it will roll us out to sea, Back out to sea, to the deep waves of death, We know not, and no search will make us know; Only the event will teach us in its hour. The dominant color of that day was green. Our first shocking experience, after two weeks of wandering around and occasionally getting into the wrong class rooms, was initiation. At last, after being properly inducted into the regular routine, the freshmen began to take part in other activities which the rest of the student body indulged in. Joe Pusateri was made an “A” team sub for the Festus Tigers’ Basketball Team. Betty Davis was chosen to be the freshman attendant to the Basketball Sweetheart and also to the Carnival Queen. The following officers were elected to lead the freshman class: president, Bob Bequette; vice-president, Joe Pusateri; secretary, Pat Cleek; treasurer, Eileen Langelier; sergeant-at-arms, Jim Burnside; sponsors, Miss Lucile Holmes and Miss Emma Lee Hoffman. SOPHOMORE YEAR Almost all of our class survived the first year at F.H.S. and came back for another year of instruction, for we were beginning to feel a little more sure of ourselves by then. Our first big thrill of this year was the freshman initiation. We thoroughly enjoyed this feeling of superiority over the “freshies” and were so willing to dominate over them that the faculty had to save them from our “clutches.” Some of our ambitious classmates got on the honor roll and became members of the basketball and volleyball teams, G.A.A., track, mixed chorus, glee clubs, and various other activities. This year marked the Tigers’ first attempt at football and a few boys from our class got to be on the team. The basketball team chose Catherine Burns to be the sophomore attendant to the Basketball Sweetheart. Class officers were as follows: president, Bob Bequette; vice-president, Joe Pusateri; secretary-treasurer, Catherine Burns; sponsors, Miss Emma Lee Hoffman and Miss Dorothy Statler. JUNIOR YEAR With two years behind us since we first accepted F.H.S. as our “Alma Mater” we were raring to get started on our junior year. Once again we stepped forward to take the responsibilities we would have to shoulder this year. We put on a three-act comedy entitled “The Atomic Blonde” that was a hit with everyone who saw it; thus we piled more money into our class funds. The high-light of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom on which we juniors worked very hard. It was decided to have the Prom and banquet combined this year and this system seemed to work out to everyone’s satisfaction. The prom theme was the “Starlight Roof” and after much thought, worry, and work we produced one of the nicest proms ever given at F.H.S. Bob Bequette won a first rating with his trumpet solo at the Cape Girardeau Music Festival. Pat Karl was chosen to be the junior attendant to the Football and Carnival Queens. Betty Kassen was chosen as the junior representative at the crowning of the Basketball Sweetheart. Betty Davis and Joyce King were sent to Girls’ State and Norman Lucas and Charles Wood to Boys’ State. Our class officers for this year were: president, Nan Hurley; vice-president, Bud Panchot; secretary, Marilyn Collins; treasurer, Betty Davis; sponsors, Miss Emma Lee Hoffman and Mr. Warren Elkins. SENIOR YEAR The last mile of our journey was now at hand, and we were all looking forward to making this year the best we’ve had yet. All fifty-two of our now-remaining classmates knew we would really have to work this year, for as each year rolled by bigger and more tasks had to be completed, and as seniors, we knew we could do it. Our objective this year was to raise enough money to complete the financing of our class trip to New Orleans. The Senior Mothers’ Club was organized, and with their help, money for the trip was quickly raised. Of course, the seniors worked long and hard all through the year and presented many money-raising projects, some of which were several benefit shows, selling magazines and greeting cards, Christmas Dance, senior play, and senior carnival. This year a new state law went into effect requiring all seniors to pass a test on the National Constitution, Missouri Constitution, American Institutions, and American History before graduation. This added to the hustle and bustle of the last half of the year and also piled more work on the poor seniors. Bill Stauss was crowned Leap Year King as the high-light of the Senior Carnival. Pat Karl was the choice of the basketball team to be the Basketball Sweetheart and was also chosen, along with Betty Kassen, Shirley Abernathy, and Catherine Burns to be a candidate for the Football Queen. The Honor Society selected Marilyn Collins as president of their organization and Betty Davis and Joyce King were co-editors of the Spokesman. Charles Salisbury, Pat Karl, and Bob Ruppert were chosen to head the production of the “Tiger,” and Marilyn Collins and Richard Blaha were crowned Tiger Queen and King. Joyce King won first place in the Junior Chamber of Commerce essay contest, “I Speak for Democracy,” and Bob Bequette received a first rating at the Cape Girardeau Music Festival for his outstanding musical ability. Charles Wood placed second in high jump at the state meet held at Columbia. Seventeen of our original freshman classmates have dropped during the journey through high school and the remaining fifty-two have learned to share work, sorrows, and joys, but now we must say good-bye. The officers who headed this wonderful class were: president, Charles Salisbury; vice-president, Bob Bequette; secretary, Pat Karl; treasurer, Marilyn Collins; class historian, Betty Kassen; reporter, Shirley Abernathy; business manager. Bob Ruppert. Our sponsors who capably guided us through our last year were Miss Emma Lee Hoffman and Mr. Warren Elkins. Fair and exquisite and clear, Broken in a million pieces, Shattered, scattered far and near. Now and then along life's pathway, Lo! some shining fragments fall; But there are so many pieces No one ever finds them all. You may find a bit of beauty. Or an honest share of wealth, While another just beside you Gathers honor, love or health. Vain to choose or grasp unduly, Broken is the perfect ball; And there are so many pieces No one ever finds them all. Yet the wise as on they journey Treasure every fragment clear. Fit them as they may together. Imaging the shattered sphere. Learning ever to be thankful, Though their share of it is small; For it has so many pieces No one ever finds them all. Priscilla Leonard TIGER. QUEEN MARILYN COLLINS TIGER KING RICHARD BLAHA TIGER KING AND QUEEN CROWNING In a beautiful coronation ceremony held on Monday evening, March 14, Marilyn Collins and Richard Blaha were crowned Tiger Queen and King of 1949. Preceding the ceremony, the beginning band presented its concert. Andy Bayers played an excellent trumpet solo. Joyce King welcomed the audience to the delightful event. The King and Queen were preceded to their thrones by retiring King Bob Ferguson and Queen Lois Maher. They were followed by attendants Shirley Keney, Catherine Burns, Eileen Langelier, Shirley Abernathy, Pat Cleek, Pat Karl, and Wanda Cunningham. The attendants were dressed in lovely pastel formals and each carried a beautiful nosegay of spring flowers. The escorts of the attendants were Charles Wood, Charles Salisbury, Bob Bequette, Norman Lucas, Glenn Gibbs, Bob Ruppert, and Donald Dixon. The crownbearers were Sue Ann Fitzgerald, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fitzgerald, and Lloyd Collins, small son of Mr. and Mrs. D. O. Collins and brother of the queen. Sue Ann looked lovely in a blue dotted swiss formal. She wore pink carnations in her hair. Lloyd wore white trousers and a navy blue coat. Both carried pillows upon which were placed gifts from the Gift Chest Jewelers. The crownbearers were followed by the King and Queen. The King looked nice in his dark brown suit. The Queen was charming in her long flowing white taffeta formal with which she wore lovely white taffeta mitts. Her nosegay consisted of white carnations with sprigs of lacy green ferns. Charles Salisbury and Charles Wood performed the coronation. A short program followed the ceremony. Elsie Self sang a lovely solo, By the Bend of the River. Charles Salisbury. She Walks in Beauty She walks in beauty like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that's best of dark and bright Meets in her aspect and her eyes: Thus mellow'd to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies. One shade the more, one ray the less. Had half impair'd the nameless grace Which eaves in every raven tress, Or softly lightens o'er her face— Where thoughts serenely sweet express How pure, how dear their dwelling place. And on that cheek, and o'er that brow So soft, so calm, yet eloquent. The smiles that win, the tints that glow. But tell of days in goodness spent, A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent. Lord Byron. PAT KARL BILL STAUSS LEAP YEAR KING In a very close contest Bill Stauss was elected Leap Year King of the 1948 Senior Carnival. Bill, our popular red bomb-shell senior, is known for his shyness with girls. Bill's escort was petite, brown-haired Shirley Abernathy. Other candidates competing for the title and their escorts were James Hill, Marian Kiepe; Earl Grieshaber, Shirley Las-ley; Wayne Skaggs and Shirley Wood. The ceremony which was held Friday night, November 5, was the highlight of the Carnival. Betty Kassen, chosen by the senior class, officiated in the crowning and bestowed the traditional kiss upon the newly crowned king. All of the girls wore lovely pastel formals and carried nosegays of fall flowers. The boys were handsome in their tailored suits. The crowd cheered as the Leap Year King was escorted from his throne by Betty Kassen and Shirley Abernathy. Long live our Leap Year King! BILL 9TAUSS FOOTBALL CROWNING At the annual crowning of the Football Queen which was held at the Harvest Dance on October 29, Doris Akins was crowned Football Queen of 1948. In the ceremony were included the retiring queen, the newly elected queen, the four other candidates with their escorts, and the crown bearer and necklace bearer. Our new queen looked enchanting in her light blue formal with a sweetheart neckline. A big flower design set off the full gathered skirt. Doris was escorted to her throne by Guy Swiger, acting football captain. Guy crowned her and presented her with a necklace with a little gold football on it and then bestowed upon her the traditional kiss. The other candidates and their escorts were Betty Kassen, Shirley Abernathy, Pat Karl, Catherine Bums, Bob Mangin, Frank Siebert, Kenneth McGhee, Bill Clark, and Bob Bequette. All the girls looked very lovely in their pastel formals, set off by their little bouquets of chrysanthemums. The students stood and sang Alma Mater immediately after the crowning ceremony. The procession followed. Patricia Godwin and Kenny Clemons were the crown and locket bearers. Patricia was adorable in her little pink formal trimmed with dainty white lace. Kenny was quite the man in his dark suit with long trousers. L«it to right on picture: Bob Bequette. Hilma Weiss, retiring queen; Bill Clark. This year it was again an open prom and quite a number of outside guests were invited by the students. A large group of board and faculty members were also present. Miss Betty Jo Clyde, Mr. Raymond Hoggard, and Mr. Murrell Godwin were the junior class sponsors and were in charge of the decorating committee. This lovely effect of Moonlight and Roses was brought about by the hard work and patience of the committee and other members of the junior class. The prom theme was carried out in the decoration of the stage and also the invitations and the dance programs. A picture of a rose was colored on each invitation which was sent to all the seniors and the dance programs were blue with a moon and bouquet of roses on the front. The setting in the gym represented a rose garden enclosed inside a rock wall. There was a little white picket fence with an archway in the middle on each side of the stage and in front of the orchestra to separate the dance floor from the rows of tables. The fences and arches were covered with roses and the low ceiling was made of loosely woven stripes of blue crepe paper. A bird bath and a white wrought iron bench on a little patch of green grass surrounded by rocks was the center front decoration. A palm tree and some more lawn furniture was placed in the back, over which a bright yellow moon shone. The prom and banquet were combined again this year and the Junior Mothers' Club prepared a very delicious buffet luncheon. They also provided a large beautifully decorated tiered cake, which was dedicated to the seniors on their graduation from high school. The seniors will always cherish the memories of their last prom at F.H.S. and will hold them dear in their hearts as one of the most wonderful times they have had in their lives. The juniors and all who assisted them are to be commended on their splendid work in making such a successful evening and leaving such precious memories in the minds of the seniors. Everyone danced to the heavenly music of Herb Mahler's orchestra from St. Louis, which added greatly to the success of the affair. FOOTBALL — I 948 The Tigers won two games and lost six in their third season of the football history of Festus High School. Coach Godwin, in his first year at Festus High, had to work with many inexperienced players. After using the T formation the first half of the season, the team switched to the single wing. Although losing six of the varsity players, the Tigers face a better outlook for the coming season. Kenneth McGhee and Guy Swiger were selected co-cap-tains of the '48 squad. Coach Brockman's five opened and closed the season with a bang, winning three out of their first four and last four games. They were entered in three tournaments, bringing home the third place trophy in the De Soto Sub-Regional. In both Farmington and Desloge Invitational tournaments they lost to much stronger teams in the opening round of play. The Tigers finished the season with 7 wins and 12 losses. After the close of the season Richard Blaha and Bob Bequette were elected co-captains for the year. We scored a total of 396 points to 366 for our opponents. The team was made up of freshmen, sophomores and juniors. These boys will make up our future varsity teams; with a few rough spots ironed out, along with the returning lettermen, the Tigers' future in basketball looks very promising. First row—lack Robertson, Dick Kassen, Melvin Basler, Wayne Holdinghausen, Joe Burnside. Second row—Bruce Hewitt, student manager; Thomas DeClue, Jerry Fallert, Bill Counts, Bob Schweigert, Paul Primo, Wayne Skaggs, Jerry Jacobs, Coach Brockman. Stanley Leon, Tom Schott, Roy Burnside, Sam Coleman. Francis Lucas, Kenneth Kast. GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team was made up of girls chosen from those who came out to practice every night after school for a period of a few weeks. The girls chose Mrs. Carol Vaughn, a graduate of F.H.S., to coach the team. She did a splendid job and stuck by the girls, despite their inability to win. First row—Betty Page, Nan Hurley, Pat Karl, Coleen Colin. Catherine Burns, Jerry Schrum, Betty Kassen, Trula Skaggs. Second row—Anna Cage, Pat Pratt. Erma Hoffmeister, Sally Clark, Dorothy Drissell. Patty Page, Shirley Hurst, Georgeann Hurley, Mildred Hill. Phyliss Wienberry. Erma Pierce. TWIRLERS AND CHEER LEADERS The baton twirlers, dressed in their bright gold and black uniforms, proudly twirling and highly stepping to the music of the band, helped lend glamour and arouse enthusiasm to the home football games. The cheer leaders also did a good job of leading the pep squad in their yells for the home team. Even at the games away from home there were always some cheer leaders to start the students in singing their praises to dear old F.H. S. First row—Jerry Schrum, Marie Leon, Valle Pfaff, Doris Akins. Second row—Darla Reed, Georgeann Hurley, Martha Bauman, leader; Dorothy Drissell. Anna Cage, Joyce Williams. PEP SQUAD This year the pep squad was an unorganized group consisting of all those students who wanted to give support to the Tigers by cheering them and urging them on. Miss Emma Lee Hoffman was selected to sponsor the pep squad and she was always on hand at the games to contribute her share of the yelling. Football and basketball teams received excellent support from the pep squad and it helped build up the morale of the boys when they needed it to put over a victory for F.H.S. A couple of bonfires were held in the park to practice yells and bum the opponent's team before the big games. First row—Jerry Schrum, Marie Leon, Valle Pfaff, Joyce Williams, Doris Akins. Second row—Wanda Gray, Gwen Fast, Sally Clark, Patty Page, Pat Karl. Nan Hurley, Shirley Abernathy. Pat Vinyard, Erma Hoffmeister, Martha Roberts, Joan Nengel, Betty Kassen, Jacie Santschi. TRACK — 1949 As in the other major sports at Festus High, track too was in a rebuilding season. With one of the finest junior high track teams in many a year at Festus High, the track, as well as the football and basketball futures look very good at this time. One of the highlights of the season was when Charles Wood placed second in the high jump in the state track meet held at Columbia on May 7. Mr. Clemons headed the music department last year and stayed with us again this year to lead the band through a very successful year. The band gave two concerts and at each made a very nice showing of the talents of the band members. Some very good instrumental solos were also presented. At the annual trip to the S.E. Mo. Music Festival held at Cape Girardeau the band received a first rating and was sent to the State Festival at Columbia where it received a II rating. The band was always on hand at the home football games to contribute some much-appreciated music. The Pep Band was selected from the band and played at all the home basketball games. This was a great help to the spirits of the Festus Tigers. The band went to Bonne Terre in March to hear a concert given by the Missouri University band. This concert was enjoyed immensely by all. Four students have been members of the band for seven years. They are Nan Hurley, Don Dixon, Bob Luhn, and Keith Vinyard. 1st row—Nan Hurley, Betty Matthes, Bill McCaleb. There are 43 members in the boys' glee club. The boys sang two selections, Rain and the River by Fox and Brothers Sing On by Grieg-McKinney, at the Music Festival at Cape Girardeau and came out with a first rating, entitling them to go to Columbia for the state contest this year.
