SCULL BAYMER WHEELING I The Arrow and the Song I shot an arrow into the air; It fell to earth, I knew not where, For, so swiftly it flew, the sight Could not follow it in its flight. I breathed a song into the air; It fell to earth, I knew not where, For who has sight so keen and strong That it can follow the flight of song? Long, long afterwards, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke; And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend. —Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. H. S. in all eagerness and full anticipation for the next four years. The first great event was the initiation of the “poor green little freshies.” It was a hilarious affair and after scaring the wits out of them the great sophomores allowed them a little fun. The freshmen, later on in the year, were given a chance to show their wonderful ability by presenting three one-act plays. After this venture they were much more sure of themselves. all boys that year selected Mary Is the freshman attendant to the etheart. rs were: arrell Scott; Vice-President, Per-retary, Phyllis DeClue; Treas-|ndiver; Sgt. at Arms, Bill Davis. Miss Carrie Claiborne, Mr. FHOMORE YEAR llass of ’46 stepped into the halls or Fbstus High but not quaking and full of fear this time. It was a determined step the other students heard. They were Sophomores! The first event of this year was the initiation of the freshman class. This they did in such a willing manner that the faculty had to save the freshies from the grip of their “superiors.” Next came a weiner roast which turned out to be more of a swimming party since the heavens poured forth a deluge on the cheery picnickers. The last event of the year was the sophomore assembly. The upper classmen were Said to have enjoyed it very much. We wonder. The basketball squad chose Gloria Pusateri to be the sophomore attendant to the. Basketball Sweetheart. Laura Thomure won first place in the American Legion Essay Contest. Class officers were: President, Perry Duncan; Vice-President, Harry Grob; Sec'y-Treas., Ruth Kretzmann. Sponsors: Miss Magdeline Berger, Mr. Loran Blaine. JUNIOR YEAR In the fall of '44 the slowly diminishing class of ’46 came to school once more ready to face the coming year. They had a large job to do. The first task which they were only too glad to do was the co-sponsoring of the annual Christmas dance. Because of the success of the dance and also because of the need of funds for the Prom and Banquet they gave a Carnival which really was a nice project. This venture earned quite a sum for their treasury. No more activities were engaged in until Prom time came and then things began to fly. Decorations to be made, orchestra to contact, programs, cokes, etc. Oh! the endless stream of tasks! But never fear—the class always came through with flying colors before and this time was no exception. A lovely prom was given and a delectable banquet was appreciated by faculty and students. This year Phyllis DeClue was Maid of Honor to the Basketball Sweetheart. Officers were : President, Ralph Johnson; Vice-President, Perry Duncan; Secretary, Laura Thomure; Treasurer, Faith Vandiver. Sponsors: Mrs. Dorothy Manes, Mrs. Dessie Beaven. SENIOR YEAR The last mile of the journey was now at hand. Auld Lang Syne was the theme to which they, the Class of ’46, marched. This was the finals to a grand and glorious saga of school days. The great plan to be completed during this year was the raising of a large amount of money with which to take a trip after graduation. Work had to be done and willing hands were required. A series of work-days were started which while profitable were (groan) quite strenuous. A Harvest Dance was then given for relaxation. Numerous other activities given during the year included two benefit picture shows, three one-act plays, box supper-square dance, Choki-Choki tournament and Alumni game given by the senior class. A Senior Mothers' Club was formed with the purpose of aiding the seniors with their trip. Their activities included chili dinners, Cook Book sale, bingo, carnival and card party. Everyone was as “busy as beavers” and the seniors became quite well-known by the townspeople. Laura Thomure and Norvel Martin were elected Tiger Queen and King and Sue AuBu-chon was elected Carnival Queen. The “Tigers” were again County Champs and selected Phyllis DeClue this time as their Basketball Sweetheart. Commencement, graduation, everything hustle and bustle, hurrying and scurrying and finally a piece of sheepskin being received in award for twelve years of receiving knowledge. This was the End. Senior class officers are: President, Robert Panchot; Vice-President, Gene McMahon; Secretary, Laura Thomure; Treasurer, Phyllis DeClue; Class Historian, Faith Vandiver. Beautiful eyes are those that show. Like crystal panes, where hearthfires glow, Beautiful thoughts that burn below. Beautiful lips are those whose works Leap from the heart like songs of birds, Yet whose utterance prudence girds. Beautiful hands are those that do Work that is honest and brave and true, Moment by moment the long day through. Beautiful feet are those that go On kindly ministries to and fro, Down lowliest ways, if God wills it so. Beautiful shoulders are those that bear Ceaseless burdens of homely care With patient grace and daily prayer. Beautiful lives are those that bless Silent rivers of happiness. Whose hidden fountains but few may guess. —Ellen P. Allerton. A quick responsiveness in word and deed, A dignity and stateliness at need, The will to follow or the art to lead. The Tigers team was made up of boys with very little experience, but they were hard workers, willing to be coached, and every boy on the squad was a team man. There were no individual stars, as all games were won on excellent team work. Through this excellent team work and fine spirit of cooperation the Tigers were able to win the Jefferson County Conference championship by defeating Crystal City in a play-off game by the score of 25-23. For the first time in the history of the school Festus has won three successive Conference titles. The Tigers played 28 games during the 1945-46 season, and won 18 and lost 10. They were entered in three tournaments and were able to bring home trophies for second place in the Farmington Invitational Christmas tournament and for third place in the De Soto Sub-Regional. Festus lost to Bismarck in the second round of the Desloge invitational. After the close of the season Earl “Big Mac” McClanahan and Richard “Slick” Rolph were elected honorary captains for the year. “Big Mac” was the team’s leading scorer and “Slick” was one of the best rebound men we had the pleasure of seeing this year. The Tigers defeated De Soto and Herculaneum in dual meets, won the Mineral Area Relays and the Jefferson County Track and Field Meet. On April 27 the Tiger Track Squad entered the Southeast Missouri District Meet in class “B” at Cape Girardeau. Although not victorious in this meet, they did compile enough points to finish third. Ralph Johnson, Tiger weight and dash man, was the leading man of the meet with 16 points. Ralph won the discus with a throw of 121 feet. He placed second in the shot put with a heave of 42 feet. In the dash he won first in the 220 being timed at :23.9. He also finished second in the 100-yd. Dick Hall, who has been plagued by injuries all year, was injured after finishing third in the 100-yd. dash. He was unable to finish competition in the broad jump and pole vault, however, before he injured his ankle he was able to finish third in the distance jump and fourth in the pole vault. Success It’s doing your job the best you can And being just to your fellowman; It’s making money, but holding friends And staying true to your aims and ends; It’s figuring how and learning why, And looking forward and thinking high. And dreaming a little and doing much; It’s keeping always in closest touch With what is finest in work and deed; It’s being thorough, yet making speed; It’s daring blithely the field of chance While making your work a brave romance; It’s going onward despite defeat And fighting staunchly, but keeping sweet; It’s being clean and it’s playing fair; It’s laughing lightly at Dame Despair; It’s looking up at the stars above, And drinking deeply of life and love; It’s struggling on with the will to win, But taking loss with a cheerful grin, It’s sharing sorrow, and work and mirth, And making better this dear old earth; It’s serving, striving through strain and stress, It’s doing your noblest—that’s Success. —Anonymous. Every senior mother contributed in some way to the organization to make it a success. The Mothers’ Club raised twelve hundred dollars, which was given to the seniors for their trip. Those Mothers on the picture are: First Row—Mrs. Anna Primo, Mrs. Charles Kurtz, Mrs. H. E. CHORUS Over one hundred boys and girls made up our fine chorus this year. Under the capable direction of Mr. Paul Brake this group has done exceptionally nice work. The chorus sang the Christmas selections at our candle-light service. They also appeared in a concert group on May 10, in the high school auditorium. A choral ensemble of 45 members from the chorus sang three beautiful selections at the baccalaureate services. They were: “Gloria,” from Twelfth Mass, by Mozart; “Now the Day is Over,” by Joseph Barnby, and “Abide with Me,” by William H. Monk. THE PEP SQUAD This year the Pep Squad was a well organized group of boys and girls who whole heartedly did their bit in helping the basketball boys come through with many victories and finally to the county championship. The first meeting was held to choose new cheer leaders. Those chosen were “Jerry” Portell, a sophomore, and “Buddy” Panchot, a freshman boy. “Butch” De-Clue, a senior was with us again this year, and “Sonny” Rowland for part of the year. Quite a few meetings were held so as to keep everybody in good spirits, and to teach the boys and girls new yells and songs. Everyone cooperated and the Pep Squad was a great success. The members of the Pep Squad wore fashionable hats so that they could be distinguished from the rest of the crowd. They were black with gold F. H. S. letters on them. The Pep Squad was very faithful to their team, and every game night would see them trotting out to school. If the game was not on their own home court they would pool their funds, hire a bus, and go merrily to the game hoping to come back with another victory, and they usually did! Chorus' fcjj SquaA ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Tiger Staff acknowledges and thanks the following individuals and organizations for their assistance and gifts given to the school: Miss Florence Juncker, Art Instructor, for the art work in this issue of “The Tiger.” The Senior Mothers’ Club for their assistance in raising money for the Senior trip.
