For many beautiful days, the seniors did not do much fighting but alas, after a while, when Mr, Big Moment, that is, graduation was drawing near, a few members retreated, but the rest of thorn just kept on fighting and now they are to receive their reward----a discharge from the recruiting army and a pass book to the Arim - of Life. S. regiment, thirsting for knowledge and hungering for adventure. Since then, they have almost all quenched their thirst and satisfied their hunger. A few people ate and drank too fast, and as a result, they died out of the army life. At the end of the.year, the junior class had decreased in number but not much in strength, grit, and energy. They gained honors in assembly programs and have all proved to be wholly cooperative. The following commanding officers 'were elected by the Sergeants: General—Russell Bauman; Captain--Tm Alexander; First Lieutenant—Doris Griffin; Second Lieutenant—Selma Stolzer; Third Lieutenant—Sam Porter; Fourth Lieutenant—Nadine Abernathy. Are they prepared for their final part—their senior year? Indeed they are; it will be only another successful and happy victory for them. Good luck, juniors 1 JUNIOR-SENIOR ?KOjV) Che of the most beawtiful and eagerly anticipated occasions of Pestus High School is the annual junior-senior banquet and prom, where the seniors are entertained by the juniors for a last get-together and good time before graduation. This year, through a vote by the members of the two classes, it was decided to have a reception and pram rather than the usual banquet and prom. It was held Saturday, May 10 in the high school auditorium; Elmo Dense’8 orchestra played for the pran. The dance band sat on a platform where the PIPER King and Queen were crowned dur ing the intermission. The Dutch theme was carried out in the blue and white decorations, with the timely wind-r mills Dutch wells, etc. to add to the atmosphere. At the reception, which preoeded the dance, a buffet dinner was served, with sophomore girls acting as waitresses. Further entertainment was furnished by Hazel Belle Scheidner, Hubert Moore, and Dotty Jacobs, all former students of F. H. S. A trio consisting of Pauline Dugan, Margaret Heddell and Imogene Weber gave a vooal number. Dance programs with a picture of a Dutch girl cn the outside were handed to all the students to fill out if they liked. At twelve midnight, the guests departed, taking with them the memory of a treasured occasion-————the big event of high school life. Very modestly did they receive compliments on being cooperative and taking part in all school activities. They wore noted for their pep, push, and punctuality. This year they took off on their second hop with their General, Joe Saricgo and his three lieuienants-Calvin McCreary, Catherine Hoockle, and Eugene Lucas. My first day at school, yes, it's the same old story, but of course, it is new to me. However, on with our little farce. A-gain I walk, this time to the auditorium, whereupon I feel quite poetic and witness a rhapsody of shining(?) upturned (?) faces. Kids to the right of me, kids to the left of me, kids all around me, end teachers in the middle. But, after many introductions, much speech-making, applauding, and schedule-pondering, we are taken to a strange heaven called our hone-room. Here we again meet the various teachers, and I must confess I'm getting rather bored with it all. So forward through eight long periods in a half of a day. I go heme at noon, and mother asks the old question about what I learned at school today. I look blank and can only shake my head sadly. But, as all motion pictures and short stories should have a happy ending, ours shall be no exception. After all, high school is really four years of grand experience. We take the bad with the good, the joys with the sorrows, the detentions with the assemblies• You can quote me as saying, I'm glad I came to Ffestus High. SPOKESMAN S'JAff To probe out all details and facts in a case, the arny has an intelligence department— and so have we i And not only does our intelligence department discover the facts, but they print them so that all the students can know them.— in a weekly publication, the SPOKESMAN, and a yearbook, (you’re looking at it) the PIFER. The staff, publishing the paper and yearbook is made up of members of tho journalism class. They are chosen by a competitive test taken by all interested students in their junior year. Besides doing curricular work in newswriting, each student in the class holds a staff position for each publication, either on the editorial or production departments. The SPOKESMAN has been a mimeographed paper since journalism was added to the curriculum in 1938. TJp until that time it had been printed in the town papers as a section of school nows. In 1938 the form was changed from a bi-monthly magazine to a six-page weekly newspaper. Since then it has been awarded second place as the best mimeographed high school newspaper and third place as tho best news paper in the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association contest at Columbia and has received excellent rating by the National Mimeograph Exchange. Last year’s Christmas issue won second place in the contest for the best special edition of a school newspaper and Gertrude George Lichty, a member of the class, won second place in newswriting in the state. The SPOKES?AN this year has managed to scoop all papers several times, including an account of the Festus-Crystal battle for championship. The paper was distributed 43.5 seconds after tho gun. The class made a trip to St. Louis and visited the A. E. Dick Mimeograph Company and went through ' the Globe Democrat building, sponsored the coronation of tho basketball sweetheart, and the bon-fire before the Crystal game. ?l PER. STAFF This year's PIPER staff consisted of 21 students. Each, held a position on the SPOKESMAN and PIIER staffs. The PIPER editor, Dorothy Davis, was chosen by the journalism class and she in turn chose her staff. Alicia Kline was the assistant editor. 'The staff was: Francis Frazier, business manager; Geraldine Milford and Juanita Kelly, press superintendents; ' Bette Tesreau and Shirley Grohs, feature editors; JJ). There are several new features in the PIPER this year—an alumni directory, which includes the graduating classes from 1915-1940; all pictures for the annual were taken by two faculty members, Mr. Wayne Nicholson and Mr. Harold Ulbricht; for the first time, 'the pictures were lithographed, and the students arranged all picture pages. In 1926 the student body decided to renew tho old custom of getting out a printed yearbook, and a prize was offered for the best name submitted by the students, Wallis Crow; who turned in the winning name, ' when' asked about his choioe, said, I'liked its short concise meahing, its easo of illustration, end its adaptability to the general set-up of the book.0 To quote from the first issue, The PIPER endeavors to pipo forth ' the story of the achievements and pleasures which have echoed through the halls of Fostus High during the past school year, During thd worst years of the depression, the PIFER was discontinued,-but was again published in 193C. The PIFER staff of this year -wishes to express its appreciation to all who aided in making this year's PIPER a success, We appreciate this cooperation. 3 d Tcr_ S' PfltiSMIM) PIPER STAFF SELECTED r rj o' r BjVIAM C T2! The next year it was under the sponsorship of Mr. Thurston Hill, who turned it over to Mr. Nicholson the following year HONOR SOCIETY LIBRARIANS HI-Y Any army has its mess hall and it's usually the most popu-lar place in camp—and so it is with our imaginary selective service unit. The lure of delicious aromas floating up from the general direction of the frustrated algebra students on the third floor, combined with the pulcritude in the department, made it recognized as not only nice, but necessary to Fes-tus High School. Deserving second year home economics students are honored with membership in the Home Economics Club, organized in 1938 and affiliated with the National Home Economics'Club in 1939. The club, started by Miss Heleft Manley her first year here, was organized so that second year home economics students could further develop those qualities aimed at in class. The charter members set up as their motto, Like others if you would be liked, their flow- er, violets; 'colors, pink and silver; mascot, a pink elephant; their purpose to develop better personalities, teach cooperation and give recognition to girls who have made consistent and superior progress in home economics work. Their regular meeting night is tbe third Thursday of each month. Bornadine LaRose and Margaret Schultz have held the offices of president and vice president since the club's beginning and Bottyann Muellersman now secretary-treasurer has previously held the offices of secretary and of treasurer. The club participates in several social activities, such as parties and outings, throughout the year. The club has 19 charter members, 10 of which are still in school. SWEETHEART Sybil Poole, senior of F.H.S., was chosen to reign as basketball queen for the year of 1941. Betty Rose Oberle, junior, served as special maid of honor. Other attendants were Anzolette Huskey, sophanore, and Henrietta Rigdon, freshman. Robert Reecht, the basketball captain, placed the crown cn the queen's head. Sybil is a member of the National Honor Society, has played an important part in dramatic productions. The queen wore a ’white chiffon formal and carried a bouquet of pink and white carnations. The maid of honor wore a pink chiffon formal and carried yellow jonquils. Anzolette Huskey wore a pink formal with a bolero, and Henrietta Rigdon wore a white hoop-skirt formal. Both g rls carried yellow jonquils. Escorts were Eugene Lucas, Jim Grossman, Wilbert Arnold, and Oscar Elliott. In choosing the queen the team could have made no wiser a choice. Sybil has the dignity and the regal quality of any queen and we are proud to be her loyal subjects. Sweetheart and Maids Sweetheart and Attendants t-L-L PERSONALITIES Alicia Kline and Dorothy Davis are both typical as outstanding students. They are a successful combination of all the qualities on this page; truly, two OUTSTANDING STUDENTS. Cleora Mae Erown’s sincerity, her refinement, and her consideration for others, make her ideal for the award of COURTESY. His alertness, his tact and diplomacy, and his ability to go forward as a leador make Francis Frazier our nomination for LEADERSHIP. Joan Brennan's enthusiasm and reliability, her wide knowlodgo of all subjects, and her dependability make her a top-notch SCHOLAR. As a handsome mnn-about-town, bedause of his brilliant smile, because ho appreciates lovely things, and bocauso ho is an all-around good follow, Roger Griffin well deserves the award for BEST-LOOKING student. I ■ ‘ Virginia Williams, with a charm and beauty that makes ovofi the glamour girls envious; because she is cheerful, honest, friondly, and everybody's friond, Virginia has been chosen for the award of H2RS0NALITY. A little lass with a lot of talent as an all-round musician, Mildred Krotzmann wins our admiration as tho school's outstanding MUSICIAN. Jim Grossman, as his picture proves, well dosorves the title NEATEST student. His good choice in clothes and the fact that he wears thorn well holps him to win this titlo easily. Verna Dunning's ability includes good acting and speech— making. She will always bo remoriiberod as one of the horoino's of the '40 and '41 all-school plays. She has proved herself a loader in DRAMATICS. Junotto Bittick's reliability, And her ploasuro and willingness to do little things for pooplo, mark her as an ideal for SERVICE. Rbbort Reocht, a boy who is unsurpassed in tho field of ath-lotics, showed us his ability as a basketball, softball, and track star hc's one great ATHIETE. 'Sh, 0.
