our prericlen Lf By 1964, fifty years after the college was founded, seven presidents had filled the leadership role at Ferrum Junior College. Their administra- tions present a wondrous chronolgy of the growth of our school. Their records in the annuals of this institution show that their job required greatness--the making of big decisions, the projection of broad vision, the solving of tremendous problems, and their remaining big in the face of criticism. These seven men possessed these qualities of greatness which enabled them to make wise decisions which often did not follow the easy road, to see beyond the present and plan for the crucial educational demands of the future, to tackle problems which did not have quick and easy solutions, and to maintain personal dignity in all adversity. They hadthe courage to persist and battle for funds for the continued pro- gress of Ferrum Junior College. They implemented innovations in policy and standards which led Ferrum Junior College to an enviable position among small colleges of the nation. By their lead Ferrum Junior College commanded respect for educational excellence. Diverse in their eras, backgrounds, ideals, and philosophies, they were thoroughly united in their objective--a bigger and better Ferrum Junior College. For their dedicated labor, for their indomitable courage, for their intellectual leadership, for their unlimited foresight, and for their devotion to Ferrum Junior College, we, the staff of the 1964 BEACON, with deep humility, dedicate this yearbook to our former presidents.
