The student publications at Ferrum junior College are THE BEACON, the college yearbook, and The Echo, the weekly newspaper. Staff mem- bers of the newspaper are required to take the course in journalism. The instructor of journalism becomes the sponsor of both THE BEACON and Tbe Echo. In addition, the journalism instructor sponsors a Press Club composed of members of the journalism class and other students interested in the publishing of the yearbook and newspaper. The Press Club elects THE BEACON staff at its first meeting in the fall, and this year Betty jane Bowling was elected editor, James S. Farmer, associate editorg Galen M. Hill, art editor, and Betty Townsend, business manager. Six members were added later, as follows: Robert Register, snapshot editor, Elsie Mae Garrison, copy-reader, Swanson Williams, circulation managerg Walter H. Carson and B. Goodman, sports editorsg George F. Neeb, advertising managerg and Patricia Wright, PUBLICATIONS photo editor. The Echo staff had as its editor for the first semester, Joan C. Shepherd. In the second semester after various changes in the stalf in order to give each journalism student experience in the different ofhces, the staff for the second semester was named as follows: James S. Farmer, editor-in-chief, George F. Neeb, News editor, Wesley Lucas, fea- tures, Buddy Carson, sports, and Patricia Wright, exchanges, Swanson Williams and Robert Rose, reporters. The officers of the Press Club for the term are joan C. Shepherd, president, Galen Hill, vice president, and Betty Jane Bowling, secretary. As the yearbook goes to press the club is working on a minstrel show to raise their annual contribution towards the publication of THE BEACON. Last year they gave two one-act plays and an operetta.
