Early in college life the freshmen elected Fred Gilley, president, William Berry, vice president, June Joyner, secre- tary-treasurer, Jimmy Joe Watkins, reporter, and Ann Bryan and Wilford Spradlin, representatives to the Student Government. Mrs. Franklin Parker was chosen sponsor. The first activity spon- sored by the class was the annual hike to Pigg River. Some will remember this beau- tiful Saturday afternoon only in terms of the number of blisters they ac- quired on feet not used to hiking, while others will remember with pleasure the good food, the fun, and the fellowship. Under the guidance of the class the Thanksgiving banquet on November 21 was planned around the theme, Be Thankful. This was also stressed in the challenging message of the speaker, Dr. H. H. Hughes, Superintendent of the Roanoke District of the Virginia Methodist Conference. The close cooperation among the committees and the entire membership of class made this occasion an outstanding success. The freshman class began the year with ninety members, but during the first semester a number found it impossible to continue and I FRONT! Mr.f. Parker, Bryan, joyner BACK: Spradlin, Gilley, Berry, Watkinx dropped out, among them the following who entered the armed forces of the United States: Edward Bowling, Bill Hutto, Glenn McCall, Bobby Redford, Johnny Smith, and Jimmy Joe Watkins. Each year the freshman class elects one girl as attendant in the May Court. This year the honor went to Marlies Scaggs. The interest and guidance of Mrs. Parker have been an inspiration to every member of the class and have resulted in a growth in spirit since September. It is the sincere hope of the class that it will continue to grow for another year under the guidance of the president and faculty of Ferrum Junior College. +2l19l2f'
