General Education The provision of a program of general education and pre-professional training for stu- dents at Ferris began as early in the history of the Institute as 1895 when instructional offerings first began to be organized as distinct courses of study. Later this idea was given a more distinct form when, in 1933, a Junior College and Pre-Professional School was organ- ized as a part of Ferris Institute. This, however, was later incorporated into the lower- division programs of the Commercé and Pharmacy Divisions. More recently it became clear that a separate unit to provide the services or offering and’ co-ordinating general education experiences for students and providing two-year pre-profes- sional programs of study was again needed. Present day developments and accepted prac- tice in higher education gave support to the desion to organize in the spring of 1953, a General Education and Pre-Professional Division.
