SW -so rimson and old no- ff' -1 s i V , I' First Year College Class Over the Alps lies Italy, Said Hannibal some hundred years ago, and that expression has come down to the present time to mean that the attain- ment of one's aspirations lies just beyond. The phrase is peculiarly suited to the First Year College Class, for we have left the preparation for our journey behind and have now started on our first lap in earnest. In September, some over thirty eager travellers on the road to Italy, en- rolled in the register at Ferris Inn which is situated one quarter of the way on the journey across the Alps. Here we have been given instructions, by the kindly innkeeper and his many capable assistants, which will guide us on the remaining sections of' our journey and which we shall use when we have reached our goal. All has not been work here at the Inn, howeverg parties and dances have helped pass the time outside the recitation hours. A basketball team, formed by the boys of the class, succeeded in defeating all teams put forth by our fellow travellers, and was duly crowned the champion squad. Knowing that every band must have a leader, we chose for our first team, Earl Engstrom. The second term, Harold Ahlgren was elected to till the leader's place with Curtis Wernette assisting him. Gertrude Sutton, we chose as scribe and as keeper of our financial resources. Our sojourn at this delightful spot is rapidly nearing its close, and we must soon travel to our second place of instruction. Perchance our paths shall diverge widely, and no two of us may follow the same course to the fields of law, medicine, linance, engineering, literature, and art. We shall meet new travelling companions, form new friendships, and lose connections with our original group. Come what may, once we have reached our goal no mem- ories will be more pleasant than those which carry us back to nineteen twenty- three and four, to the friendly host of Ferris Inn, to his able attendants who pointed out to us the way across the Alps with Italy lying attractively in the distance.
