BASEBALL The spring of last year brought forth another team under the new-born banner of Ferris. Known as Dickinson Annex during the previous season, the baseball team trotted onto the field with the name Ferris neatly sewed in green letters on their uniforms. No one knew what to expect from the band of boys who were practicing so faithfully under the able tutelage of coach George Wood. Only four players had any previous experience. The others were green, one of the mainstays of the pitching staff was a freshman and only a few members of the team showed any power in hitting. After reading local press reports those in Scholastic Sport Circles decided that the team with its youth and inexperience was not expected to go anywhere. But although the squad closed the season with a record of six wins and nine losses, the season might be termed successful for the team played a surprisingly good brand of baseball, and provided trouble no end for county teams. The season started with freshman johnny Stanton twirling a ten inning 6-5 victory over Memorial, previous season County Champions. To prove that the Memorial win was no accident Ray Godleski and johnny Stanton teamed up together on the mound and came through with an 11-10 win over Dickinson. The winning punch was supplied by Dutch Schultz when he singled in the ninth with the bases full to give the Bull- dogs the runs necessary for victory. It also marked the third time that Ferris had come from behind to take the lead. Here the team slipped into a slough and the effects of overwork could be plainly seen in Godelski and Stanton who were dividing every game on the schedule between them. The result of the slump was four straight losses before Al Manzo's booming wagon tongue won the St. joseph's game in the form of a home run. The Bulldogs then went down before St. Peter's, Bayonne, Dickinson, Snyder and Lincoln in that order, three of the defeats being by close scores. The hitting of Dzitko, Manzo, Schultz, and Baratelli along with Biviano's line fielding was apparently going to waste until the team pulled through with a win over the Faculty and then closed the season by avenging the Snyder and St. Peter defeats. Thus with the first season behind it the Ferris baseball star is in its ascendancy. It rose to great heights this season and will surely rise higher with the coming of the next. WILLIAM j. FLANAGAN.
