CLASS CALENDAR Samuel Pepys, betimes, and Mary Astor, betimes also, were the two most famous diarists. The present writer does not aspire to be either one. Mrs. Roosevelt comes closer to the present writer's aspirations. But aspirations aside, this diary will not reflect Samuel, Mary, or in a far different sense, Mrs. Roosevelt. As a matter of fact, it will not reflect anything, being more of a recording than a reflection. It should really begin: This is William joseph Flanagan, speaking to you over station J. J. F. H. fmeaning james J. Ferris Highj. However, as a recording it could not be used on the major net- works, so maybe we'd better just call it a notebook and let it go at that. SEPTEMBER 9-Met the old gang today, and boy, was I glad to see them! Oh yes, and boy, too, was I glad to see boat ride movies in P. M. Assembly, twice. 10-After history period, Year Book staff held a meeting which lasted far less than a year, but which no doubt will linger until name, theme, and circulation drive for Year Book is settled. 11-Lou Lepis and his footballers demonstrated blocking, etc., on Thursday-mentioned Friday because otherwise Friday would be all fish, and some beef is necessary for general stability. 15-Toothache yesterday. Assistant diary keeper fell down on job-completely ignor- ing Ed Hoeffner's return to school. - 16-Pow-Wow held, and Year Book named The Ferris Wheel. This writer. hopes that it will go 'round and 'round, and come out here. flt HASU 17-Vic ftrackteamj Falango, and Lou Qlikewisej Scerbo, won medals. Mr. Miller introduced Cheerleading Cheerubs, who cheered. 18-Hurricane hit Jersey City-started The Ferris Wheel circulation. 21-Went to Paul's for a sundae. Went to Student Voice today, which is Monday. 22-Felt pretty sleepy. . 25-Bell saved me in algebra-would not have been able to come out for another round. 24-Was given part in For God and Spain. Will play part of Castillio-another actor will play Columbus. 25-My Ferextra poster hung on bulletin board today. Fire drill called to give student body opportunity to look at same. 28- Ferextra came out with winning score in our favor. 29- Ferextra going strong. 30-Giants won 6-1, or aren't you interested in the World's Series? DEFINITION The STAR was remote and too concerned with his own conceit to be of any value to your story teller. The STAR was merely a Four Letter Man who wore sweaters as if the letters were all that mattered. The STAR was a pretty cold propostion, and wouldn't be mentioned here except for his influence on the life of Eve. Eve was a lovely girl with hair darker than you'd think, and eyes that were equally dark and laughing. On top of that, she was much smarter than an admirer of the STAR should really be. Eve was in love with the STAR, however, and the fact that she was smart didn't matter at all. To Fred, who was in love with Eve, and to her brother jimmy, it mattered a lot, and was as significant as the average broken heart,-or as the average broken vase, for that matter. It happened in the living room. Fred threw the vase at jimmy, and it almost hit Eve as she came in. When Eve inquired, the reason was forthcoming. The STAR was a better football player, dancer, and looker than Fred, according to jimmy. The pity of it was that Eve agreed with jimmy, and jimmy was only kidding. The two boys were pretty blue brooding over a problem engendered by the STAR'S swelled head-vaguely hoping that the head would burst, and solve all problems. There wasn't a chance, however, and practical jimmy tried to figure something else. Fred wasn't much help-he just sat there like a bad cold. Girls pleasingly plump, girls, pretty, plain, good-natured, catty, intelligent, stupid or even beautifpl were there at Cherrydale High ready and able to solve problems. They could have solved Fred's, but Fred was a mere three letter man, and the letters spelled If you can imagine a fellow sitting there reading funny sheets and identifying him- self with Caspar Milquetoast, Andy Gump, and similar futile characters, you can imagine Fred. It was lunch period, and Fred's appetite had been spoiled by a glimpse of Eve out there on the campus looking at, not funny sheets, but the STAR while he tormented a football with studious and superior kicks. Eve was gasping with admiration while poor Fred continued his distinctly unpleasureable perusal of, otherwise funny, sheets. Meanwhile jimmy got an idea and planted it in the Press Room of the school news- paper. The idea bore fruit a few days later in an anonymous gossip column. There, dropped like the apple on Newton, was a definition of Athlete's Head. It was more than a definition-it was a cap large enough to fit the STAR. Everybody saw how well it fitted except the STAR-and Eve. Eve cried and jimmy had to read the definition fifteen times before Eve was willing to admit that Fred was actually a better, or at least, more modest hero, not only in football but in fifteen other departments of personality. Now everything is all right. jimmy has been forgiven for writing the damaging definition. Eve did the forgiving-the STAR just never got around to it. The STAR simply faded out and we'd be sorry, of course, except for remembering that he really wasn't worth our opening paragraph. Fred feels pretty good now. He goes around secretly, very secretly, identifying him- self with the personalities of Lochinvar, Samson, and Robert Taylor. Girls openly agree with his secret identification,--Eve certainly does because Eve is 'Fred's steady girl friend now, and jimmy-well jimmy has become a specialist in definitions. Page Tbrrly-:ix
