CLASS HISTORY It was pretty terrible at first--like going back to grammar school. They called us Dickinson Annex, and they may as well have called us Frivolous Sal -we felt peculiar enough. It was as if they had sent us away from the party just before the ice cream was passed around. Of course we knew this feeling shouldn't be there-we were, after all, people, and 'high school students. But that's the trouble with an annex-people who live in annexes are really living in glass houses. So there we were in a glass house-a glass house called Dickinson Annex. And there was Dickinson looking down at us from the hilltop ! D We were self-conscious and ill at ease, and sometimes the sun got very hot. Then we figured, What's wrong with living in a glass house? What's wrong with living in a glass house if you can learn to be proud of what's going on there ? There wasn't any- thing wrong that we couldn't make right so we set to work and made things right. We started The Scribe, a class room paper, and it evolved into The Slzzdent Voice, and in the evolution, the mimeographed form was left behind, and now we have the printed paper. Organizations grew at the same rapid pace from the same germ of action- Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Track Qof course there were other cultural develop- mentsj. We were too busy to notice people watching us, and thereby became all the more worth watching. Pretty soon we weren't an annex, but a high school-the james I. Ferris High School. And we weren't living in a glass house-or were we? We won- dered, and then decided that we were, because after all, life is a glass house. Would you call life an annex? No. Life is living-doing things. There was a place for frivolity, so we went on a boat ride. It was a jolly boat ride, and we enjoyed it. Every- body went, and it became more than just a boat ride because for the first time james J. Ferris High School was acting as a unit. Being frivolous together, playing together, made us realize that we had been working together all the time. Our Senior Class is still a part of the unit-being merely the side which faces the sun. The first Senior play has passed into the shadows, and the sun is shining on the Ferrir Wheel. The success or failure of this Yearbook rests in what it means to you. It can be no less than an honest report of progress, always turning. Next year another class will face the sun. Q Page Thirty three

CLASS CALENDAR Samuel Pepys, betimes, and Mary Astor, betimes also, were the two most famous diarists. The present writer does not aspire to be either one. Mrs. Roosevelt comes closer to the present writer's aspirations. But aspirations aside, this diary will not reflect Samuel, Mary, or in a far different sense, Mrs. Roosevelt. As a matter of fact, it will not reflect anything, being more of a recording than a reflection. It should really begin: This is William joseph Flanagan, speaking to you over station J. J. F. H. fmeaning james J. Ferris Highj. However, as a recording it could not be used on the major net- works, so maybe we'd better just call it a notebook and let it go at that. SEPTEMBER 9-Met the old gang today, and boy, was I glad to see them! Oh yes, and boy, too, was I glad to see boat ride movies in P. M. Assembly, twice. 10-After history period, Year Book staff held a meeting which lasted far less than a year, but which no doubt will linger until name, theme, and circulation drive for Year Book is settled. 11-Lou Lepis and his footballers demonstrated blocking, etc., on Thursday-mentioned Friday because otherwise Friday would be all fish, and some beef is necessary for general stability. 15-Toothache yesterday. Assistant diary keeper fell down on job-completely ignor- ing Ed Hoeffner's return to school. - 16-Pow-Wow held, and Year Book named The Ferris Wheel. This writer. hopes that it will go 'round and 'round, and come out here. flt HASU 17-Vic ftrackteamj Falango, and Lou Qlikewisej Scerbo, won medals. Mr. Miller introduced Cheerleading Cheerubs, who cheered. 18-Hurricane hit Jersey City-started The Ferris Wheel circulation. 21-Went to Paul's for a sundae. Went to Student Voice today, which is Monday. 22-Felt pretty sleepy. . 25-Bell saved me in algebra-would not have been able to come out for another round. 24-Was given part in For God and Spain. Will play part of Castillio-another actor will play Columbus. 25-My Ferextra poster hung on bulletin board today. Fire drill called to give student body opportunity to look at same. 28- Ferextra came out with winning score in our favor. 29- Ferextra going strong. 30-Giants won 6-1, or aren't you interested in the World's Series? I OCTOBER 1-Cheerubs still cheering cheerfully. 2-President Franklin Roosevelt came to jersey City! 5-Benny Spirito still in Medical Center-sans appendix. 6-Pictures for The Ferris Wheel came out-looked like passport photos!
