We want to be successful, but what does this mean? For us at FHS, it means always striving to do our best whether it be in our academic pursuits, jobs, athletics, family lives, extra-curricular activities, or just relaxing. 1988 is an Olympic year. The athletes who have practiced and progressed for four years will finally get the chance to show the world all that they can do. These years have prepared them to meet the final challenge just like our years at FHS are preparing us for life. Both the Olympics and this period of our lives are about courage and determination. 1988 has been a year where we’ve pushed ourselves. We’ve had our glorious victories and our painful defeats, but just like the Olympic athlete, they’ve made us stronger. When we look back on 1988, it will be obvious .ha, we were GOING fQR QQiPf 17 = Above left: Principal Ed Griffen addresses the audience at Commencement. Their spirit was evident by placing third in class color day with their display of black wardrobe. Next on the list was the decorating of the hallway which placed first. It required total effort and six hours to pull off the win. Peter Kuang and Aimee D’Anna provided the artistic ability for the sophomore window which took a disappointing third place. They made up for the third place finish by once again placing first in the float competition. Despite some hasty preparation, they managed to get the float to the post office by the 6:00 deadline. Winning the float competition topped off their exciting spirit as they out-shined the competition for the second year in a row. Friends are as essential in school as reading, writing, and arithme- tic. Without them, coming to school would be dull and uninter- esting. They play an important role in our daily lives. They are there to share the good times along with the bad. They are there to help finish homework assign- ments or share secrets. Nobody can define friendship. Most peo- ple have an idea of what friend- ship is, but a friend is somebody you judge for yourself. Friend- ships that are made during the four years at Ferndale High School are often the ones that stick with us a lifetime. J 89 r Work ‘N’ Play “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Truer words were never spoken. As everyone should know, work is the bottom line of success. This especially holds true at Ferndale High School, where many prominent students have graduated. But after all of the studying and test-taking is over, it is time to have fun. Students enjoy them- selves in many different ways, such as athletics, social gatherings or just simply going to the mall. But they must be careful to know' when it is time to play, and when it is time to work. There are no elevators in the building of suc- cess, there are only stairways. What’s The Word? Spreading gossip, nearly everyone has done it before, although many people would agree it is unethical. They also know how much fun it is. “Gossiping” has probably been around as long as there has been some- thing to gossip about. For many it comes naturally, an innate ability; for it is not something taught in school or at home. People generally gossip about anything and everything, from people to clothes. One good thing about gossip is that without it how would we know anything? Classes sometimes become too much for anyone to bear. Sophomores have one remedy: escape to the hallways. With or without passes, they aimlessly trav- el the long corridors. A simple trip to the counseling office can easily turn into a forty minute voyage which takes them up and down stairs and around corners with stops for the drinking fountain, vending ma- chines, and sometimes chats with friends through open doorways. Often sudden detours are necessary when these vagabonds encounter a hall monitor. The adventure comes to an end as the students enter their classrooms, eyes sparkling, with the secrets of their journey. Not only are they a way for the student to express himself, but Fine Arts classes also allow the student a chance to grow and show a creative side of himself that may not have come out be- fore. Students get the opportunity to discover talents they may never have known they had. By becom- ing involved in Fine Arts these same students have a chance to nurture these talents so that one day they may be able to make a career out of them. We hope that the graduating class of 1988 enters their new lives with the enthusiasm and drive that you showed as students in the Ferndale Schools. Many of us can remember you as eager, wide-eyed 5 and 6 year olds waiting for each school day to bring new experiences your way. We then watched you grow and gain maturity as you went through our junior high schools. Now, you are leaving Ferndale High School, the place where you displayed the talents and hard work that brought you to this point, graduation. You will now begin your role as young adults in the world of work, service, or school. We are proud of you and look forward to hearing about your future accomplishments.
