In some classrooms, speaking skills are being developed through speeches, interpretive readings, scene inactment or group discussion. Writing skills take shape in a creative attempt at a short story, a journal, an editorial, an essay ques- tion or a research paper. Listening skills are shar- pened through lectures, note-taking or audio-visual presentations. Yet at the heart of all these activities are the reading skills which are formed. Reading is the cornerstone of all language skills. Emphasis on performance includes participation in festivals where our groups have a chance to be rated by university level judges. The “Solo and Ensemble Festival” pro- vides tough competition with students all over the state, as musicians are tested in both performance and sight reading skills. Reaching State com- petition this year were: Greg Poterala, Trombone; Kathy Ura, Flute; Mike Haddad, Violin; Micheline Chase, Flute; Katie Dixon, Flute. Students are offered a four year sequence of four foreign languages: French, German, Latin, and Spanish. Talented, ambitious sen- iors may enroll in an advanced placement course and take the advanced placement test for college credit. Stu- dents may participate in the School Exchange Service program and go to school in Germany for three weeks. While learning foreign languages, students get acquaint- ed with other cultures through field trips, books, discus- sions, films, songs, and folk dancing. These facilities will enable the department to offer a project course in alternate energy. The geodesic dome is designed to be a science study center, a weather station, and a solar energy demonstration site. The solar greenhouse will be used by students in plant biology classes. The two ponds and the various plant species that will surround them will make up the nature area. The total development will be available to the elementary school stu- dents and the community at large with the goal of increasing the interest and understanding of alternate use and the appre- ciation of the natural environment. Students study subjects as diversified as world-reli- gions, careers and American govern- ment and economics. This year, elec- tives in urban studies, a study of the family, and the Afro American heri- tage have been offered. Central to all courses is the relationship between the subject at hand and the world in which we live. Discussion and exchange of ideas in an atmosphere of respect for differences of opinion is encouraged, and students come to the realization that the social studies will be surround- ing them all of their lives. The goal is to offer the students a chance to experience technically challenging selec- tions while performing within a semi-profes- sional situation. The orchestra again spon- sored a fruit sale to raise money for scholar- ships and a possible tour. To allow for more individual attention and instruction, the three divisions of the club began meeting at seperate times rather than all at once. Six new student teachers were also chosen to lead the Beginner and Intermediate groups. Lisa Berg became head coach this season, while Mrs. Demlow, former head coach, was on maternity leave, busy with her own little future modern dancer. It has always been a support system to girls’ athletics, helping to purchase equipment and sponsor social events. They wound up the year by putting on a banquet to honor all girl athletes and to award special achievers. The Varsity Club is a group for both male and female athletes interested in helping to support the athletic program by rais- ing funds at sporting events. The club, under the guidance of coach Gary Sophiea, is only in its second year, but growing steadily. 64 Above right: The GAA Board. Front: Michele Derdacle. The Co-op class teaches students more about the work they are doing, which will help them in their day to day job performance. Each year Co-op students have flower sales for Sweetest Day and Valentine’s Day. With the prof- its from the sales, students host a banquet for their bosses at the end of the year. Latin: veni vidi vici The Latin Club was established to help students better understand the Roman and Greek cultures. The club attains this purpose by sponsoring several enjoyable activities, such as viewing the Greek- Roman Exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts and again transforming our own cafeteria into a lavish Roman Banquet Hall. All students interested in ancient cultures are encouraged to join. Above left: Club officers. Front: President, Kirk Stenback; Vice President, Wcnde Schmidt. After a time of inactivity, a small core of art students felt the need to share their creative ideas with others. Led by President Walter Andersons, the club has hosted a guest speaker (artist. Nelson Smith), taken a museum trip, and held a sale of holiday crafts and baked goods. The supporting officers are Vice- President, Larry Gibson; Secretary, Pat Knieper; Treasurer, Tracey Samseli. Future goals include a set up studio time with critiques by fellow students and advisers Mrs. Potts and Mr. Lakin. They also wish to set up a permanent art display area between the two existing art rooms. czph 0f Above right: Senior Larry Gibson proudly admires his Print Shop door design. The club recently held a “Game Night” where any student could play games on the computers for a small fee. The varsity football team played a tough schedule again this year. After losses to Dondero and Kimball the Eagles bounced back to beat Scaholm and An- dover. The shut-out of Andover was a “first” since 1976, proving the Fcrndale defense is back! Losses to Southfield and Troy were followed by a snowy victory at Berkley, the first victory in 2 seasons on the road. The season ended with disappointing games against Lahser and Hazel Park, but a much improved season under new head coach John Bassier, lets Fcrndale fans know Football is back! The freshmen squad came on strong at the end of the season finishing with a 4-3-1 mark. Their strength was the running game of the offense. The combined strong defense of JV players and powerful offense of the freshmen should make for a great Varsity team in the near future. The team was led by captains Dave Jordan, Scott Degg, and Jerry Gadoua. One of the highlights of the year was a thorough trouncing of.Berkley 61- 12. “The wrestling team had a good season because of hard working individuals who came together as a team to be successful,” said 98 lb. sophomore Dan Jaffee. Junior Rich Mason won the tough Utica Ei- senhower Tournament. Senior Dave Jordan won both the Utica Eisenhower Tournament and the presti- gious Oakland County Tournament. It was a year of violence, as attempts were made on the lives of key world leaders. It was a year of protest, as strikes unified Polish workers, devastated Patco air traffic controllers, and angered baseball fans. It was a year of women’s achievements, as the push to pass the Equal Rights Amendent continued, and one woman won a seat on the Supreme Court bench while another won a seat on a throne. It was a year of scientific advancement, as America produced its first test-tube baby, computers and calculators became common household items, and the space program completed its first successful mission by a reusable space vehicle. If we could save time in a bottle, The first thing that we’d like to do, Is to save everyday ’til eternity passes away, Just to spend them with you. But time can’t be stored like perfume or sand, It’s fleeting, like laughter and tears. So memories saved, on these pages engraved, Are all we’ll have left of these years. 245 Editors Administration Caren Curtin Pam Clemence Mike Page Staff Business Manager Steve Ainsworth Kim Yezak Michelle Austin Photographers Mike Barnard Tracy Ambrose Anne Eggen Brad Bromley Mimi lllidgc Nancy Davies David Jaffee Richard Fritz Colleen Kompsic Fred Williamson Joe Stevens Sports Leslie Trotticr Mary Bolton Kathy Ura Rob Leonhardt Cheryl Wiley Activities Monique Willett Debbie Macumber Lisa Williams Wcndc Schmidt Lynette Wood Classes Marianne Zeko Terri Kendall Advisor Norecn Winsjanscn Ms. Mimi Gass Special thanks to the following people: Roy Burkhart, Anthony Carter.
