TALON 1981 Ferndale High School 881 Pinecrest Ferndale, Michigan 48220 Volume 21 ONE SINGULAR SENSATION Look around you any hour here at Ferndale High School and you will see a kaleidoscope of life. We are a diverse group of people studying the composition of volcanic ash, the complexity of major and minor scales, and the components of Tolkien’s fantasies. We prac- tice fencing in the commons, kick soccer balls over fences and dabble with pottery glazes. There are literally hundreds of manifesta- tions of our spirit. Like a kaleidoscope, how- ever, each of these colorful pieces combines to equal one. Who pulls out their hair trying to meet deadlines? Who put out this book? The Talon staff, of course! Adapting well to changes, the staff worked with both a new publishing company, and a new faculty adviser, Ms. Mimi Gass. Also new this year was the opportunity to study “yearbooking” at workshops given by Oakland University and Marygrove College. The staff has put in hours of hard work trying to cap- ture a year’s worth of memories in a 224-page book. Above left: Julie Williams pauses between pages! Right: First semes- ter Talon staff. Under the baton of new conductor Ms. Debbie Vanneman, members of both Symphonic Winds and Concert Band had the op- portunity to participate in the marching band. Practice began at 6:45 in the morning in the new location of the courtyard. All F.H.S. band members had the chance to play as part of the Parade of Bands at Michigan State University this year also. Lower left: Nancy Met- calfe and Patty Yungton lead new flag corps in Homecoming parade. 21 Pep . . . and all that jazz It’s impossible to think of games and pep assemblies — or even Friday mornings — without almost hearing that solid sound of the Pep Band blasting out “Rocky,” “The Stripper,” or “Fly High for Ferndale.” The talented and dedicated members of Pep Band spend a lot of extra time keeping our spirits up! New to the instrumental music program this year is the Jazz Band. This group consists of members from both Concert Band and Symphonic Winds. They also put in extra hours of rehearsal to share their talents at concerts. Above right: Pep Band Captains Paul Ferrero and Kandy Coussens. Right: Pep Band makes team and fans feel at home even at away games. Fa la la la la ... . . . that’s the sound of the Madrigals as they perform their Renaissance music throughout the Detroit area. Dressed in colorful costumes, this a capella singing group performs for school functions, civic and commu- nity groups, churches, and private organizations. En- joying her first year as the group’s director, Mrs. Mari- anne Corrigan commented, “Madrigals has been a very special and talented group to work with. We shared some very exciting performances.” r Above left: Madrigals sing at U.S.A. sponsored Senior Citizen party. Center left: David Winton, Curtis Mann, Ed Ng. In addition to nu- merous school and community con- certs, the choir participated in fund raisers for scholarships. Funds are also used for new music, folders, and cos- tumes. Ferndale’s choirs provide an op- portunity for talented, active students to get involved. Above left: Craig Campbell, Amy Downs. Cathy Cowart. They may be playing classics by Bach and Handel or swinging with the “pop” sounds of Jim Croce or show tunes, since Director Ms. Linda Puroffs goal is “to further the growth of stu- dents’ musical abilities in the area of popular selections as well as classi- cal.” Orchestra members also busy themselves raising money for their scholarship fund. They have tag days in the fall and spring, and sell Flor- ida fruit each winter. Above left: Jane Gheldof and Leslie Ferrari bring in the cellos. Right: Sue Burelle and Lisa Parkington. Show biz is fun — as any member of Student Enterprise Theatre will tell you! Ferndale’s lar- gest club, the group has over two hundred stu- dents and more join with every production. This year’s fall show. The Odd Couple was done with a new twist — Felix and Oscar be- came Felicia and Olga — a reflection of Wom- en’s Lib.! Spring was ushered in with Daisy Mae and Li’l Abner, a rip-roaring, footstomping musical. As always, the production is the big- gest extravaganza of the yeaT and a real spectac- ular evening for Ferndale audiences. Above left: More greasy make-up for Nancy Farrington and Annette Ryan. Right: Celeste Allen rehearses a phone conversation in The Odd Couple. 29 30 Eagle presses on The Eagle’s feathers took quite a ruffling this year, but members of the staff tried their best to smooth things out. At the beginning of the year there was no faculty adviser to supervise the arduous task of producing Ferndale’s bi-monthly publication. In spite of this, some members of last year’s staff managed to produce a Homecoming Special Edition. Second semester, Mrs. Gerry Kulick stepped in. Although not a teacher at FHS, she volunteered to work with students on the newspaper as an extra-curricular activity during the lunch hour. The Eagle staff, under Mrs. Kulick’s guid- ance, planned a Senior Edition, and North Central Edi- tion. Above right: Victor Morris and Darryl Vennard touch up a layout. They report on sports, clubs, dances, and other Ferndale events. We even hear a soap opera now and then. This dedicated staff lets us know there’s some- thing for everyone at Ferndale High School. That is not the sound of your ’67 Chevy, it is the sound of dozens of students dancing through the halls. In Modern Dance students learn routines combining ballet, jazz, and disco movements. Dancers per- formed for the Co-op Banquet and Honor’s Reception, as well as for their big show in May. The club members are like one big family and enjoy working together. “There’s nothing that I’ve enjoyed more or found quite as gratifying as working with the girls that are part of this year’s Modern Dance Club,” said ad- viser, Mrs. Barbara Demlow. The United Student Assembly, more commonly known as the U.S.A., is designed to be the link between the students, staff and community. Composed of officers and representatives of the four classes, the U.S.A. is responsible for many of the activities of the school, especially Spirit Week in the fall. Other activities they sponsor are Senior Citizens’ Day, Donkey Basketball, Christmas Canned Food Drive, S.M.A. Talent Show, and Eagle Emmys. The society has four committees: in school tutoring, academic enrichment, junior athletic program, and community service. The purpose of the society is to aid fellow students and the community through tutoring, activities, and special programs. 36 Above left: Gus Bisbikis. The Junior Varsity took third place in the league with many members winning speak- er trophies. The Varsity team went all the way to the elimination round at State. Steve Iamar- ino, the second year coach, gave team members a lot of help in researching and writing their winning cases. With four graduating seniors, more “young blood” is needed for next year. Front: Walter Mrozek, Paul Pin- eau. Back: Amy Schiffer, Jerry Gonto, Ted Clampitt, Phil Harris, Rodney Curtis, Bob McMurray. 38 Multiple choices Forensics is the athletics of the intellect. It involves more than talking — speakers must use the mind, voice, and body to participate in any of the interpre- tive and public speaking events. Team members compete against speakers from other schools in local, district, regional, and state meets. In recent years, Ferndale students have progressed to the state tour- nament in areas including original oratory, dramatic duo, children’s storytelling, and multiple readings. Snow is a key component to any ski club’s existence and the winter of 80-81 proved to be a fruitful one for the FHS Ski Club. Adviser, Mr. Mike McClain advocates skiing for everyone. As he put it, “If you live in Michigan you can do two things with snow: shovel it, or ski on it. The FHS Ski Club members are smart enough to trade their shovels in for skis. Join us!” Above right: Front: John Golembrieski, Sheryl Klebba. Back: Brad Bromley, Jim Deardorff, Chad Thompson. Left: Club. Front: Sheryl Klebba. Getting it together According to club president, Tia Williams, “The Black His- tory Club is a great idea — it gives you a chance to work with a lot of people and get to know them better. I really like it!” Other club members like it too; and enjoyed the weekly meetings to plan such fun activities as an all-school Talent Show and a spring Fashion Show, which gave even teachers a chance to look stylish! Funds raised were used to help Fern- dale’s Senior Citizens. Above left: Officers. Tia Williams, President; Windell Stephens, Vice President; Della Josh- ua, Secretary; Ted Guinn, Treasurer. In April, 40 students came to Ferndale from Kennedy Collegiate School in Wind- sor, Ontario to learn about U.S. schools. Ferndale students visited the Canadian schools in early May. F.H.S. also took part in an exchange with Ferndale High School in Ferndale, Washington. Five students and one teacher took a look at the “other” Ferndale in May. The exchange was not only educational, but fun too! Above right: Meeting with Mr. Dzyacky are Julie Williams, Tra- cey Hueston and Thearon Williams representing Yearbook, Na- tional Honor Society and U.S.A. respectively. Left: Ron Ross, Annette Ryan, Dawn Cousins, Sharon Johnson, Dean Cooper and Adviser, Mr. Don Hale organized the F.H.S. Windsor exchange. Right: Senior U.S.A. members read through resumes to select exchange representatives. Seated are Thearon Williams, Dave Winton, Annette Ryan, Sharon Johnson. Steve Thompson, Julie Williams, Dawn Cousins, Sue Burelle. Standing, Nancy Pohl, Lauren King, and Dana Dystant. 42 “Cogito ergo sum.” “I think, therefore I am”-in the Latin Club! Members often ponder such profound philosophies when they are not involved in their many projects which include spon- soring dances, bagel sales, and even a Roman Banquet. Funds were raised this year to make a special contribu- tion to aid Italian earthquake victims. Above left: Mr. and Mrs. Karl I Tissier display their creativity, originality, and nerve in Halloween garb. Right: Appropriately, club members cluster around their beloved Italy. Left: Kirk Stenback. The club has sponsored many activi- ties, such as a Christmas party, and trips to Cedar Pointe and Frankenmuth. Ms. Cathy Braum, the German Club advisor commented, “We’ve had many activities this year and I’ve had just as much fun with the kids as they seemed to have with the activities.” Above right: Officers. It provides on-the-job training in office occupa- tions while under the supervision of a coordinator who sees that in-school education is correlated to the job experience. Students learn a marketable skill, get graduation credits, and earn a salary all at the same time. Club members have extra fun participating in candy and flower sales to raise funds for the annual employer employee Co-op Banquet held in May. Above left: Co-op students. Here by popular demand Micro Chips? Does this refer to very small mo- torcycle cops? No! This is Ferndale’s new com- puter club. These students are interested in per- sonal computers and meet twice monthly to compare and share programming knowledge. They also hear from guest speakers who are experts in the field. Sponsor Phil VanDecar commented on the growth of the computer world saying, “These things are taking over the world.” Taking over the world of F.H.S. are the athletes. Coach Gary Sophiea brought back the Varsity Club just for them. The club sells mun- chies and programs at athletic events. With the funds raised they purchased shirts for all the members. At the end of the year they will re- ceive a well-earned trip. Above right: Varsity Club. Front: Janet Pineau, Missy Hambrick, Kelli Sweet, Kim Hansen, Victor Morris, Bill Ferrell. Mike Negus. Improving from last season, the team went 2-2 against much more experienced vet- eran teams. Sophomore Avery Gold- stein attributed the team’s progress to “hard work” and commented, “Ferndale fencing will continue to improve as long as we have deter- mined people willing to fence, work and win.” FENCING • FENCING • FENCING • FENCING • FENCING • Above right: Front: Roger Nichols, Stan Putnam. The defense was led by Senior Co-captains Mike Thrushman and Dave Vojinov along with Senior Dave Winton who turned in credible performances on the field. Much of the scoring was supplied by Seniors Ron Bidinger, Fred Petty, and MVP Mark Sladick. A considerable number of under- classmen played starting roles in 1980 and the key to success in 1981 will be their growth as players and the filling of the goalie position. The team begins workouts in November. Workouts are held every afternoon, including meet days, with the objective of hitting a peak at the SMA Championships in March. The team has hit over 90% best times for the last several seasons in the Championships. This season the swimmers missed teammate Joe Lemke who died last summer. First year coach Gary Sophiea kept Ferndale’s fine basketball reputation stronger than ever. Co-cap- tains Jeff Bloodworth and Delaine Rimmer were both keys to the Eagle’s fine year. What’s even better than being SMA champs two years in a row? Knowing that we can be SMA champs next year too! The talented J.V. and freshmen teams should pick up right where this year’s varsity team left off. J.V.’s Randy Bolden was high point scorer, and Wendall Ross as point guard was an excellent play mak- er. The freshmen team compiled a very respect- able 12-3 record. Darren Carter, who led the freshmen in many of their victories, also had the honor of playing with the varsity squad during their last regular season game and in the Districts. r. Pole vaulting, high-jumping, long- jump, discus throwing, shot-put, hur- dles, the 100-yard dash, the two-mile run, relays: these are just a few of the strenuous events that a member of the track team must master. In order to do so, they must have strength, endurance and dedication. The members of our teams have all these qualities and more. Keep on trackin, Eagles! Senior Jeanmarie Tamm and junior Lisa Weir made the SMA team, and the Eagles placed five other girls on the Honorable Mention team. Mount St. Helens erupted — again; Jimmy Carter lost the presidential election to Ronald Reagan; and the hostages came home. Amid all the breaking news, Ferndale man- aged to make its way into the headlines. After more than a decade of court battles, Ferndale schools were declared legally desegregated. Science hit the news pages as well when Voyager I transmitted photographs of Saturn back to Earth. The Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series, and the world was stunned by the tragic shooting of for- mer Beatle John Lennon. 186 Above left: Principal Ellis Brown explains the deseg- regation plan. Right: Mount St. Helens emits volcan- ic ash and smoke. Lower left: Former President Jim- my Carter concedes defeat. Lennon was shot to death outside his New York apartment in De- cember. 187 Fundraisers — our middle name F.H.S. has been overrun with the sales syndrome. Never have clubs or organizations pushed so hard to earn money. Every item thinkable has been sold: from stuffed animals to Metro Passbooks, pom-poms to cook- books, oranges to key chains, flowers to all-purpose cleanser. The year- book staff even sells space in the book for advertisements!
