At first the halls are empty, awaiting the year to begin . . . 2 The memories of last year still cling to us. 4 5 And we remember our school pride 6 rSay your name, Out loud. ” Already know. Of course this is a bunch of . . but I really did have a funky far-out year. Being a senior at F.H.S. gives one a sense of fulfillment that can be attained at no other establishment here in the U.S.A. School would mean nothing if it were not for special friends and teachers, especially Mr. Munson, who has the most expressive face I’ve ever seen, and an equally interesting class. I thought four years would take forever to end, but now in my senior year I wonder why the years went so fast. But. when I think about the time closing in on us so quickly, then I'm not laugh- ing anymore. For I am now an adult and must take on the world with strength and knowledge. It’s sad to think we allowed FHS to slip through our fingers without realizing it, but what could we do? I know that I shall walk out of this school with the determination and ability to be successful in every last goal and I thank the people at Ferndale High School. I shall miss this school but life must go on. — Gini Eberle Lynn Lelli Lorna Levitt 83 Kimberly Lohmeier David Lyskawa Anne MacKenzie Mark MacKenzie As I look down the halls of FHS. a chill runs up and down my spine and tears flow downward from the rivers of my mind. What memories. I am saddened. I'll miss the joy. the laughter, the smiles and the ringing of Fly High played by the pep band in the com- mons. What has it all been for? It’s part of a book. The book of life. My four years of Ferndale High are just part of the first chapter. Many more will follow. So many memories. All the worrying, homework, studying and striving has made me into a real person. At the time it didn't seem worth it. But it is: and it was fun! Fresh- men and underclassmen, always remember: Be INVOLVED!!! My high school years would have been a boring part of my book if I hadn't been so involved in school activities. These last four years of school will only pass once. Just once! You can never bring them back. Make the best of them, and enjoy! Meet people!Get INVOLVED! In some people’s books, the chapter of high school will be only empty pages. Don’t let this happen to you. Fill those pages with memories. After all what is life without memories? Last, but not least. I want to thank every teacher in FHS that I had for helping to mold me into the person 1 am today: especially that cer- tain someone who was not only a great teacher, but also a special friend. Thanks Cor. and thank you. Ferndale High, for being a part of my life that I will cherish forever. What memories lie behind me! Nancy Mabbitt John Maloney Andrew Mancuso Mark Martinez 84 — Judy Greene Michael McClelland Carol McMahan William Mattice Edward McCoy Margaret McCabe Laura McKinney Lori Hellenberg Janis Messing David Milburn Tom Neil Ferndale High is a wonderful school to graduate from. The school spirit between the classes has always been great. We all should be proud of our school for the good sportsmanship in all our activities. We also should be proud of all the stu- dents. teachers, and administrators that have taken their time and effort to be involved in the activities. You can have a lot of fun just by supporting your school with Spirit Week, the Friday Night football games. Homecoming activ- ities. the basketball games, or just cheering at any sports activities. Fifties Day. The Talon. The Eagle Paper, and even being in a classroom with your friends learning. When I was a freshman. I thought becoming a senior would take forever. And now that the time has come I’ve spent every minute enjoying this wonderful last year. I’ve matured a lot since I've been a freshman. 1 had a lot of experiences that have made me realize what life is about. I thank all my teachers for helping me gain more knowledge in these past years. High school can bring memories that only happen once in a lifetime. Underclassmen, best wishes with many wonderful times you can enjoy being in FHS. 1 am not sad about leaving FHS because 1 have the most important part of my early life to cherish. 1 couldn’t be happier to graduate with the Class of 78 at FHS. 86 — Lorraine Gorny As my high school days draw to a close. I can look back on all the wonderful times I've spent, all the wonderful people I've met, and all the wonderful things I've done. The time spent in high school is like the sand through an hourglass. It’s impossible to reduce its speed, but to a great extent, all the time can and should be very wisely spent. The time needs to do some good now. because soon it will have joined the past. You will learn that you have so much to do and so much to give, as your high school days and time will tell. It's not how long those days take, but what matters is how well! Memories are what make those past four years so enjoya- ble. Like the very first pep-assembly, when you are a fresh- man. the pep band plays the school fight song for every class but yours: you get Mickey Mouse played for yours. The freezing football games and the get togethers at Burger King afterwards. All the early morning meetings, the dances, assemblies, the concerts, plays, the Senior trip, and all the timely hours spent on homework. These and many, many oth- ers are the things you will remember. The time goes by so fast, you won't recall where it has gone. But. that day will come when the past four years will be all memories: and soon will be starting all over again. Meeting new people, doing new things, and finding a new beginning. Best of luck to all in high school, and remember: Make the most of each day now. because you may be wish- ing. as 1 am. for those days back once again! I really feel sympa- thy for them. I look back on my Freshman year and remem- ber all the jitters. Like the first time I went to the Cafeteria and was supposed to meet my friends there but couldn’t remember which was North and which was the South. Trying to find my way around school and coming in late to every class for a week. Those first Football games and Pep Rallies, you watch all the cool upper classmen whip through the fight song, only to have the pep band turn around and play the Mickey Mouse theme song when it was our turn. When I look back on those days now it only makes high school seem more special. And I’ll never forget all the super teachers and special friends I've met since I came here. So now I prepare to leave dear old F.H.S. and find myself once again faced with “Freshman Jitters” as I get ready for college and the outside world. Good luck class of 81. Each year we set out to make our school the most outstanding educational facility in the state of Michigan. We feel that we offer the best curriculum and instruction possible to prepare our students to compete with any other students in the state of Michigan or the United States. Because we have the best teachers, the best student body and parents, we find that it is a pleasure and an honor to serve them in our capacity as administrators. — John Dzyacky 162 Mr. Dzyacky, Mr. Meister Mr. Cannici, Mr. Williams COUNSELORS We could help students more on an indi- vidual basis. There are not enough hours in the day to work with students and cope with all our other responsibilities. — Mrs. Pinis I would rank our center as the top in Michigan. It would be nice to have more time to talk and spend with students on an individual basis. — Mr. Olson Mr. Lettisier, Mrs. Pinis Mrs. Smith Mr. Bennett. Mrs. Dilworth, Mr. Olson, Mrs. Brown 163 MEDIA CENTER We really enjoy working at F.H.S. The library is very beneficial to the school in numerous ways even though the facility could be better. The students are using it more for academics and reading. The students could be more responsible on due books. We feel our student assistants deserve a lot of credit. They really make the library work. All in all, the faculty and students have good support and usage and we’re proud of our outstanding library. — Library Staff Mrs. Benesi Mrs. Morris Mr. Kobylinski 164 PH YSICAL ED UCA TION Physical Education gives students a mental and physical chance to excel and get the most out of the classroom situation. A student only gets out of school what he puts into it.” — Dr. Burkhart I believe in the Co-ed Program. I really feel it has enhanced our program. As for the leisure sports classes. I think they have enriched our pro- gram mainly because it lets the students try sports they might have not. — Mrs. Parchem i Vlr. Carl Dr. Burkhart Mrs. Parchem Mrs. Redpath Mr. Bauer Mr. Smith Mrs. (iiltrow ENGLISH I believe that the English Department is very prog- ressive and the students are learning a great deal. The teachers care not only of the students in school aspects but they also care about their general welfare. — Mrs. Demlow I feel that pleasure reading has gone out the window. A good percentage of the students have an interest in school but most of the time they do not show it. I really enjoy working with students at the high school level. — Mr. Curley 166 Mr. Martin, Mrs. Revesz, Mrs. Donges Mrs. Beard Mrs. Segal. Mr. Curley Mr. Ford Mr. Chase Mrs. Herbig Mrs. Demlow Dr. Long Mr. McClain Mrs. Goldman Mrs. Baumann Mrs. Riwney. Mrs. Mack, Mrs. Gee 167 MATH The teachers involved maintain a high standard of excellence for the students to work at and for. The students must not think they can get off with half the work. The teachers maintain high goals for all the students. — Mrs. Bojarzin Miss Kestila, Mrs. Minneci Miss Zulick, Mr. Grad Mrs. Bojarzin, Mr. Vandecar Mr. Szckndronski, Mr. Jaksa Miss Rubin, Mr. Hall 168 SCIENCE I think there is good and bad in every department but the science department has taught me many things that I never could have imagined. They have a great bunch of teachers and all in all they really have prepared me for the sciences I will need in college. — Student I feel that we have a wonderful department. We have the best science program in the state because of the great variety we offer. Our goal is to create interest and motivate as many students as possible. We feel it is far more valuable to encourage a large amount of students to learn than to set up careers. A broad education is the best. — Mr. Munson Mr. Midea Mr. Krieder. Mr. Munson Mr. Senkowski. Mrs. Heald. Mr. Eighmey Mrs. Corsini. Mr. Wolf Mr. Bassier Mr. Bancroft 169 B US I NESS ED UCA TION I feel that the business department is an important part of FHS. It prepares people for life, whether they choose to go on to college or not. — Bill Stanley Mrs. Sturdevant, Mrs. Finn, Mr. Lemon Mr. Clark, Mr. May Mrs. Simmons Mrs. McClinchey, Mrs. Coleman. Mrs. Koney 170 Ferndale High School's Foreign Language Departmeni is one of the finest in Michigan. We are one of the few high schools left in this area with classes for four different languages. Not only do you learn a foreign language but you also learn the culture and history of that country. — Mrs. Rakowsky Ms. Gibson Mr. Bellalouna Mr. Young Mrs. Rakowsky. Ms. Braum FOREIGN LANGUAGE FINE AND APPLIED AR TS one of the finest departments in Michigan. The students have almost everything pos- sible to work with. I do not look at the stu- dents as a “ruler or “boss , but as a team. We work together to master our main goal. Mr. Schenk Mr. Takis, Mr. Watson 172 Mr. Ostrow, Mr. Deardorff, Mr. Follmer Mr. Lakin Mr. Boho Over my four years at Ferndale High School, I have found that with any prob- lem, school or not, I could go to any of the Industrial Arts teachers and talk and they have helped me out many of times. It’s teachers like these, who care, that make Ferndale High School such a great place. I feel that over the last four years I have grown more mature and learned to help my fellow man. — Student 173 SOCIAL SCIENCE I enjoy working with the students; seniors especially. I can help them on their big step into the world. I wish the school board would let us use the busses more often to take the gov- ernment classes to places like the Federal Court, and FBI Building in Detroit. I also feel that school should be more than a preparation for a job. I feel that a good percent of the students have lost all inter- est in learning. They feel that all they have to learn is exactly what is going to be on the test and quizzes and they say that they are really not taught anything. I feel that most of the time I talk to the four walls around me. — Mr. Brown 174 — Mr. Hale Mr. Girard, Miss Jorgenson, Mrs. Penberton Mr. Ivory. This year was no exception. The 1978 Talon Staff tried to accommodate the desires of the student body, their own creative ideas, and keep expenses down. This meant extra hours of planning, changes and compromises being made to produce an annual that would satisfy everyone. The results of this planning were important in making a number of changes in our TALON format. Our first decision was to try something other than the traditional brown white color combination on the cover. We picked a leather-look cover material that we felt gave the book a rich look and still related to our school colors. Our next changes were concerned with the inner pages of the yearbook. We tried to see if more space could be given to the segments of the book dealing directly with the students. By using a collage effect in the fac- ulty section, we added extra pages but retained a faculty segment that encompassed those who worked in the school and also added a new look. Other small changes were the addition of a senior list, the publication of the mock election results and the senior-baby pictures. We hope that you. the student body and people who purchase the TALON, enjoy the changes as much as we do. 1978 TALON STAFF Finishing a TALON is always a great relief for me but I also, feel a twinge of sadness as well. Although 1 anticipate the book’s arrival, I also realize that it signals the end of another school year. Since many of my staff members will graduate, I would like to wish them well and hope they enjoy their graduation yearbook. To those who are not leaving, I would like to thank them for their help in producing the 1978 TALON. Just as the students learn lessons in their classes, I always learn some lessons too. My greatest ones this year were: the teacher should always bring the punch to the Christmas party: and, that candy cane sales are a hard way to make money. Finally, 1 would like to thank the Talon Staff for their friendship. It made the “crazy moments” easier to bear and the good ones even more memorable. Cynthia Riwney March 1978
