JoiiM Ftb uM iCetuiody, 3Sth Piest d idbofr the United States (1917-1962) oA« F. Kennedy was the first President with whom our class could closely associate itself. As freshmen, we observed the nomination, campaign, and election of this fine man. In our high school auditorium, we watched his inauguration; and ironically, three years later we were informed there, of his assassination. His outstanding record of service to the United States of America is a fine example to all of us. Therefore, we, the Reflector Staff of 1964, thought it fitting that we dedicate this edition of our yearbook to the memory of our late President. tu ougu TUB SEASONS Greetings to You: Education grows from deep roots in our Americah heritage. I would challenge you to recognize the potentiality of education and that your own education never really ends. Even though we may have reached the goal of graduation, we shall continue to have many educational experiences and opportunities. He who takes advantage of these and learns, shall be successful. Through education there is promise and hope for the advancement of all mankind. Ours is a constantly changing world. Dynamic and epochal changes have come to be accepted as commonplace. Amid these world shaking developments, we look to education to give us the wisdom, the understanding, and the know-how, to meet the challenges of our day. The ideals of our education do not change but our methods of realizing them do change. It is our hope that we have given to you while you have been a student at Ferndale-Dale High School, not only the basic tools with which to learn, but also a genuine desire to learn. Further, I would challenge you to put your learning to use in lives that are morally, physically, socially, and spiritually sound. Sincerely, Elmer J. Berkebile Supervising Principal GUfDt . DR. GRUMLING Mr. VARNER MR. RODGERS AD Uf M fSTRATT ON This year the administration has done an efficient and praiseworthy job. In his second year as supervising principal, Mr. Berkebile once again proved to be a devoted and able leader of our school system. He has rightfully earned the respect of all. Dr. Russell Grumling, assistant supendsing principal, is very helpful to our administration. Working with our supervising principal. Dr. Grumling has been a valuable asset in solving the problems of the Ferndale-Dale school system. Mr. Colbert Varner has done a fine job as principal of Ferndale-Dale High School. This year being his second year at Ferndale, Mr. Varner is admired by the students for the loyalty and dedication with which he governs our school. Mr. Richard Rodgers is serving as principal of Dale Junior High School. He is very interested and active in his duties which make him a competent leader of the Dale Junior High. Our secretaries, Mrs. Emma Koerber, Miss Sandy Merberger, and Miss Pat Killinger, deserve the best of congratulations on a job well done in assisting the administration of our school system. MRS. FERNDALE-DALE JOINT SCHOOL BOARD The efficiency with which the Joint Board of Directors governs our school does not change with the seasons. When they are elected in the fall of the year, they immediately start organizing and taking charge of school affairs. Throughout the fall and winter they are ready to face any problems that may occur and are always using their initiative and leadership to improve our school system. With the arrival of spring is graduation; our school board lends a helping hand in preparing for that memorable day in our lives. Spring also means the closing of school and many of us sit back to enjoy a long summer vacation. But the school board continues working with Summer School and preparing for the opening of school in the fall. This year the school board, under the leadership of Mr. Harry Hamilton, has done a fine job worthy of our thanks and appreciation. SCHOOL BOARD. V C' „nu u(d nv At some schools the last day is a sign for a period of rest, but at Ferndale-Dale it's a signal for the beginning of summer school. This year there was an enrollment of 543 students— more than any previous year. Some classes had to be held in the teachers’ room and girls' locker room in order to accommodate the large number of pupils. Students came from all over the area and two were from Florida. Some of the schools represented were: Richland, Ligonier, Jen- 18 Row 1; Mr. Hershberger, Mr. Salem, Mr. Crawford. Row 2: Miss Rager, Mr. Heptner. Mr. Rodgers, Mrs. Rodgers. Row 3: Mr. Vizzini. Much was accomplished in the classes, along with the making of new acquaintances and meeting new' teachers. Ten students were able to receive their diplomas from their respective high schools as a result of this program. It is hoped that Ferndale-Dale can continue this successful summer school program in the future. 19 ' PERSFtRanOJ 20 21 23 mnii mL THE FALLING LEAVES DRiFT EY MV WINDOW, 7U0SE AUTU UN LEAVES OF RED AND GOLD . . fOR PtAY DeVON SAINTZ Tackle-Senior Wt.-l63 Ht'5 DeVon served as reserve tackle, on offense and fense. Although losing two games, both to district powerhouses, and tying one, the team’s six wins were more than enough to make the season a success. Camp Sequanota in Jennerstown was the scene of this year's pre-season football camp. As- Mike McCall—Co-captain, Bob Rokita—Captain, and Dick Apple Co-captain talk over their Strategy” for their next game with Coach Hyland. sisted by Coaches Hershberger and Matsko, Coach Hyland worked the squad into a well-polished unit. Highlights of the season were a 14-12 victory over Windber, in a game where many people thought the Jackets were playing out of their class, a 20-7 win over Conemaugh Township, the Indians’ only loss, and a 20-19 victory over the Richland Rams. In the Richland game, the Jackets were trailing 19-6 late in the final period. At that point injured quarterback Mike McCall came off the bench to hurl two touchdown passes to Dick Apple; and Bob Rokita kicked two extra points to gain the thrilling win. We wish to thank the team and coaching staff for presenting a very memorable season to the loyal student body and all the followers of the Stingers this year. We hope that next year’s squad can produce an equally good record. We wish them the best of luck in '64. 30 Team Mascot TOMMY HYLAND Assistant Coach JOHN MATSKO 1962 VAR rrV football record Head Coach JACK HYLAND FD Opponents Windber Area 14 12 United 21 12 Conemaugh Township 20 7 Westmont Hilltop 0 0 East Conemaugh 0 25 Triangle Area 6 2 Richland Township 20 19 Adams-Summerhill 21 18 Bishop McCort 7 29 6-Wins 2-Losses 1-Tie Assistant Coach NYLE HERSHBERGER MANAGERS________Wayne Blue, Chico Alvarez, Brian Speicher, George Diehl, Barry Rager, Statistician—Ed Petrick. They allowed only eighteen points, while rolling over seven opponents. The seven wins this year added to the ten-game winning streak which they will carry into next year’s opener. The Junior Jackets have only lost one game under their two fine coaches. That game was a 13-6 loss to Conemaugh Township in 1962, which the Stingers avenged with a 14-0 rout this year. Starting early in the summer, the squad began working for the upcoming football season and school year. They held a bonfire for the opening game in addition to the traditional Westmont bonfire. They also sponsored several morning pep rallies in the grade school playground plus one each weekend before the game. Their artistic ability produced many signs for the halls, and big signs for the team. Performing at half-time with precision marches and enjoyable music selections, it provided much entertainment. Hard work was put into these shows with practices at band camp, during first period and after school. Also a part of the band, leading it in parades and contributing to the band fund by sponsoring a Majorette Contest, were the high-stepping majorettes. They along with the colorguards also aided the band in half-time shows and various band functions. Letters were given as rewards to members and the seniors received blazers. Students were also sent to county, district and regional band. Plans were made for a trip to Winchester, Virginia, in the spring to participate in the Apple Blossom Festival. Raising the money for this trip and practices for competition served as the main projects for the band during the year. 37 PEP BAND. Rou 1—Pat Rummel, Fred Thomas. Rou 2—Donna Hill. The first play was a farce entitled, If Men Played Cards As Women Do . It was a story of four men at a card game mimicking the manner in which women gossip. Sorry, Wrong Number, ’ portraying Linda Clark as the invalid, Mrs. Stevenson, was a drama about a woman who heard her murder being planned over the telephone and tried to get help. The final play starred Fred Thomas. He played Buddy in Buddy Pays the Mortgage”. It was a comedy about a boy trying to keep a goat hidden in the house. The advisor was Mr. Rich. Bill McGinnis was his assistant. The student directors were Bob Fuge, Karen Smay and Earlene Rabel and Carol Constable was co-ordinator. PHIL SEBES BOB ROKITA BOB JOHNSON JIM GARNER The 1963-64 varsity squad of Coach Rigby experienced a fairly respectable season, ending with a 7-12 chart. Playing in the tough Tri-County League, our boys could only manage a sixth place finish, losing two league games in overtime and three others by margins of five points or less. The Stingers showed that they had what it takes by winning four of their final five games. Although this past season was not the best, record-wise, it provided the student body with many exciting moments as the team progressed rapidly toward the end of the season. At the conclusion of the season Coach Rigby took his boys to the St. Francis Tournament. Next year’s squad should be quite successful as only two players will be lost by graduation. JUNIOR- VARSITY CASERG This year's junior varsity, under new head coach Wayne Klaum, had a fairly successful season, winning 7 of 19 games. Probably the high point of the season was their 44-39 win over Johnstown. Near the end of the season, many of the JV’s got a chance to see a little varsity action, thus preparing them for the future. Several of these boys have shown real development and should make valuable additions to the varsity next year. The 1963-64 wrestling team emerged with a fine 6-3 record, the best ever compiled by any of Ferndale-Dale’s mat squads. Several boys ended the season with very good individual records. Larry Varner, the team captain, was tops with an 8-1, while the four other seniors, Carlos Alvarez, Bob Walter, Dennis Baumbaugh, and John Horner also had good seasons and helped the team greatly. The prospects for next year’s squad appear excellent as seven of the varsity boys will be returning. The JV’s also showed some promising talent. We can be proud of the glory which Coach Matsko’s wrestlers brought our school this year and hope that they continue to do as well in future years. 60 I could have danced all night. Brotherly Love?? Evidence of this is in the fact that we have three groups. They are: Senior Y-Teens, Junior Y-Teens, and the Jackettes. Our groups are very' proud of their affiliation with the Y.W.C.A. Highlight of the season was an 8-1 win over the Scarlet and Grey of Westmont, the first in more than five years. With five returning lettermen and seven regulars back from last year’s team, this season’s squad, under new Head Coach Thomas Petrore, should enjoy a very successful season in 1964. 96 COACH THOMAS PETRORE TRACK With thirteen lettermen returning, the 1964 edition of Ferndale-Dale's Track Team should be a very successful one. Under their new head coach Wayne Klaum and assistant coach Wayne McKay; the boys will again compete in many of the' area’s big meets, including the Coaches Meet, and the District 6 Meet. Last year Bob Rokita set a new school record in the shotput. We hope that he will keep up the good work and continue to help our squad to victory. BOB ROKITA COACH WAYNE KLAUM The students of Ferndale-Dale should take more interest in this very colorful and exciting sport and support the squad at all the meets. In the spring, when most young men’s thoughts turn to love, an ambitious group of seven boys head toward the links at Sunnehanna Country Club. These boys comprise the golf team of Ferndale-Dale High School. Having the smallest athletic squad in the school, our boys will enter into competition again this spring. Led by Coach Rigby our team will pit their skills against many area high schools. We wish the team the best of luck this year. 98 Our two Senior Stars, Myrl Smithson and Dave Schlentner (SvjUNnsnce DON PARKE LARRY VARNER CARLOS ALVAREZ The gymnastics program in our school has grown until it is one of the more prominent activities at Ferndale-Dale. Coach Rigby initiated this sport eight years ago, and since then he has produced some of the area’s finest gymnasts. Gymnastics can be divided into skills on five types of apparatus —the mats, the rings, the high bar, the parallel bars, and for the first time this year, the side-horse. This spring four of our gymnasts competed in the state championships. They are: Don Parke, Carlos Alvarez, Bob Walter, and Bob Dickert. We are very proud of these boys and our school’s gymnastic program. GEORGE SCHECH CLOYD KAUFMAN BOB WALTER BOB DICKERT 99 EACH Chorus Director —Mr. Wm. Beautiful concerts, were given at our annual Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter assemblies. In addition to these assemblies, our chorus combined with the Westmont Hilltop Senior High Chorus, sang a concert on March 8. This event was one of the highlights of the year for the group. Also the annual Spring Concert was held and those attending greatly appreciated the program. Ferndale-Dale was represented at County, District and State Music Festivals by various members of the chorus.
